When people talk about violent crime in America, there’s no shortage of opinions.
A new report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) tries to cut through the politics by digging into the FBI’s latest homicide data. The findings cover where murders happen, who commits them, who the victims are, and how often murders cross racial lines.
Some of the numbers may surprise you.
One of the biggest takeaways is just how concentrated murder is in the United States. As we discussed earlier this week, the worst 1% of counties account for 41% of all murders while containing only about 20% of the country’s population. Expand that to the worst 2% of counties, and they account for 54% of murders despite making up just 30% of the population.
On the flip side, most counties rarely see a homicide at all.
More than half of U.S. counties—53%—recorded zero murders in 2024. Another 16% had just one. Together, those counties make up 69% of all counties in America but account for only 3% of the nation’s murders.
The report also looks at who is committing those murders.
According to the FBI data analyzed by the CPRC, Black offenders accounted for 56.4% of known murderers in 2024. Lott notes that the FBI’s race data combines Hispanic and non-Hispanic White offenders into a single “White” category. He argues likely understates the number of Hispanic offenders because ethnicity isn’t reported consistently across jurisdictions.

The report also compares each group’s share of murderers with its share of the overall U.S. population.
The ratio is meant to answer one simple question: Is this group represented among known murderers more or less often than its share of the population?
If every demographic group committed murders strictly in proportion to its share of the population, everyone would score 1.0. Instead, the CPRC found one group stood far apart from the rest. Black males registered 8.3, White males were 1.2, and every other demographic group came in below 1.0.

Another finding challenges a common perception about violent crime.
According to the report, most murders happen within the same racial group, not between different racial groups.
In both 2020 and 2024, about 90% of Black homicide victims were killed by Black offenders. For White victims, roughly 80% were killed by White offenders.
The report also found that Black victims are murdered by Black offenders about nine times more often than by White offenders. White victims are murdered by White offenders roughly three to four times more often than by Black offenders.

Age also plays a major role.
According to the FBI data, 53% of known murderers were between 13 and 29 years old in 2024, meaning more than half of all known homicide offenders fell into that relatively young age group.
As with much of John Lott’s research, the report is likely to spark debate. But regardless of readers’ political views, the data paints a picture of violent crime that is far more concentrated than many people realize: concentrated in a relatively small number of places, committed disproportionately by specific demographic groups, and overwhelmingly affecting victims of the same race as their attackers.
For Lott, that’s exactly why the numbers matter. He argues that understanding who commits violent crime, who is most often victimized, and where those crimes occur is essential to having an honest conversation about public safety.

Opinions are just like ASSHOLES every body has one and apparently some of you have two. The murder statistics are skewered to satisfy an objective, simply look at the population numbers of each category and you’ll see why the numbers are disproportionately off. Murder numbers will always be reflected by where you reside .White on white crime occurs mostly where you live and it’s no different for any other race. The author eludes to this passively in the second to last paragraph that some of you choose to ignore before offering up your cultural assumptions and stereotypes. A discussion of what race has and still commits more murders isn’t a debate. Study the real history of murder in this country and not the one that propaganda and privilege has afforded you.

Lack of family values and structure in homes without a father creates youth that have no sense of responsibility. Actions have consequences is an unknown concept to these youth. 75 % of all vehicles had guns in them when I was in high school in mid 80s. Zero shootings. Never heard of a school shooting. 95% homes had a both parents. I must believe that a strong family , that being a mother and father in the home is a key factor in crimes committed by juveniles.
That’s a great point, and very true. Now, the dirty little secret: We encourage single parent families and discourage dual parent families by the structure of our “social welfare safety net”. Economist Walter Williams did a study some years back on family structures comparing 1960 numbers with more recent (can’t recall if late 90’s or after 2000). The figures were stark. The vast majority of babies (of all races) were born into 2 parent families in 1960. Now — a small minority of black babies are; only a modest majority of white babies are. What’s the difference? Our social welfare programs that pay more for a child if there’s one parent and less if there’s two. What’s the incentive for keeping the family together? The point is: this societal problem is much deeper rooted and problematic than any of the sound-bite political hacks or media types want to recognize.
I grew up on the coast of GA and have never murdered anyone. I cannot say that I have never killed anyone as I spent 21 years in the military and was in the US Army Special Forces and deployed to several different combat zones. My father passed away when I was 5 years old and I grew up most of my younger years without a living father but I learned to work as a young boy which is not allowed anymore. I helped to support my mother and two younger brothers. I have owned a pistol and other weapons since the age of 12 and used them for hunting food for us to live on. Giving responsibility and supervising children is one thing that is missing in todays life style. I am now 86 years of age and still going.

My ancestry is from the northeastern part of Spain (Basque country) I have green eyes with light brown hair and white as a ghost. I get confused by being white or European 100% of the time. How about breaking these data down by population density and SES?
I would imagine since the vast majority of these issues are contained in the big cities, population density would be practically meaningless. I imagine we could just look up the top 10 murder capitals of the US and extrapolate from there.
I’d be interested in seeing what the numbers for white look like if we separated Latinos. Here in central Texas we have a fair amount of Latino gangs.
