Best Weatherby Rifles (2026): 307, Vanguard, Mark V & More

in Bolt-Action, GA Guides, Rifles

The best Weatherby rifles have always been about one thing: putting a bullet where you want it, fast and flat, from a rifle that can take a beating in the backcountry. Roy Weatherby built his name on screaming magnum cartridges, but the modern lineup runs from a Vanguard that lists at $869 MSRP in 2026 to carbon fiber mountain rifles and the newer Model 307, a Remington 700 pattern action built in Sheridan, Wyoming.

That range is the problem for buyers. A Weatherby can mean a classic nine lug Mark V, a two lug Vanguard, a 700 footprint 307, or a folding chassis rifle that weighs less than a loaded pack frame. They do not all do the same job, and the price spread runs into the thousands.

Our writers at GunsAmerica Digest have shot all of them. One ran a 307 Range XP in 7 PRC with four factory loads over a chronograph. Another tested the brand new 25 Wby RPM cartridge and printed a 0.33 inch group. Another put 100 rounds through a 6.6 pound Model 307 Alpine MDT Carbon in one sitting and rang steel out to 1,100 yards. For a brand versus brand look at hunting rifles, see our best bolt action hunting rifles.

Weatherby backs its Mark V, Vanguard and 307 rifles with a sub-MOA guarantee for three shot groups at 100 yards with Weatherby or premium ammo, and nearly every rifle we tested beat it with at least one load. Start with the buyer’s guide, then jump to the picks. Prices are current manufacturer MSRP checked in October 2026, with the price at the time of review noted where it helps, and discontinued models show their last known price and sit at the end of the list as picks worth finding used.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Weatherby Rifles In 2026

Weatherby builds three action families, and picking the right one matters more than picking the cartridge.

Mark V, Vanguard Or Model 307

The Mark V is the classic Weatherby action, with a low 54 degree bolt lift and a bolt designed around big magnum pressures. It is the premium line and costs more. The Vanguard is the value line, a two lug push feed action that our Badlands reviewer called accurate and affordable at $799 MSRP in 2020; it lists at $869 MSRP in 2026. The Model 307 is the newest action. Weatherby based it on the Remington 700 footprint so it works with 700 pattern stocks and triggers, and the bolt comes apart without tools.

Weatherby Magnum Or Standard Cartridge

Weatherby magnums like the 257 Wby, 300 Wby and 6.5-300 Wby shoot flat and hit hard, but ammo costs more and recoil is real. Our Terramark reviewer paid about $3 a round for .300 Wby Mag ammo in 2014. The newer 25 Wby RPM uses a rebated rim to get close to magnum speed with much less kick, and most models also come in standard cartridges like 6.5 Creedmoor and 7 PRC. If you hunt big bears or buffalo, see our dangerous game rifles instead.

Weight Versus Shootability

A 6 to 7 pound rifle is a joy to carry up a mountain and a handful at the bench. Our Alpine MDT reviewer was getting sore after nearly 100 rounds of 7 PRC through a 6.6 pound rifle. Heavier rifles like the 8.25 pound Mark V First Lite soak up more recoil. Weatherby puts muzzle brakes on many models, and the 307 Range XP ships with both a brake and a thread protector.

Scope Mounting

Do not assume your old rail fits. Our 307 Range XP reviewer could not find a Savage or Leupold base that fit the 307 receiver and ended up buying Weatherby’s Peak 44 rail for $69 in 2025, or about $82 delivered. Budget for that. For glass, see our best rifle scopes for the money.

The Sub-MOA Guarantee

Weatherby guarantees three shot groups of 0.99 inch or less at 100 yards from a cold barrel with Weatherby factory or premium ammo. Our Range XP reviewer noted the 307 guarantee runs two years from purchase for the original owner. It is a guarantee, not a promise that every load will shoot. Our testers saw groups from 0.33 inch to about 1.3 inches depending on the ammunition, so test a few loads.

Best Weatherby Rifles Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Weatherby Model 307 Range XP 2.0 In 25 Wby RPM: Best Weatherby Rifle Overall (2026)

The Weatherby Model 307 Range XP 2.0 in 25 Wby RPM is the best Weatherby rifle overall because it is the current version of the 307 Range XP, with the same Remington 700 pattern action, and the new rebated rim cartridge pushes heavy, high BC quarter bore bullets fast without the shove of a full magnum. Our reviewer, who owns and loves a 257 Wby Mag, said the recoil of the new round was significantly less.

He topped the rifle with a Trijicon Credo HX 2.5-15Γ—42 in Talley rings and shot five three shot groups per load instead of three because the first test went so well. The 133 grain Berger Elite Hunter load clocked 2,996 fps, averaged 0.62 inch and printed a 0.33 inch best group. The 117 grain Barnes LRX averaged 0.79 inch with a 0.39 inch best. He did that with the TriggerTech Field trigger left at 4 pounds 3 ounces out of the box. Feeding and extraction were flawless. The catch: the 257 Wby Mag is still faster, and the 25 Wby RPM has to prove it is more than a niche cartridge.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 25 Wby RPM (as tested)
  • Action: Model 307, Remington 700 footprint, two lug bolt
  • Trigger: TriggerTech Field, 4 lb 3 oz as tested, adjustable to 2.5 lb
  • Stock: adjustable cheekpiece, hand painted sponge pattern
  • Factory loads: 107 gr to 133 gr, 3,350 to 3,000 fps claimed
  • Price: $1,299 MSRP (2026)

Pros

  • Less recoil than the 257 Wby Mag
  • 0.33 inch best group
  • Heavy, high BC bullet options
  • Flawless feeding and extraction

Cons

  • 257 Wby Mag is still faster
  • New cartridge, so ammo choices are limited
  • Trigger shipped heavy

Weatherby Model 307 Alpine MDT Carbon: Best Lightweight Weatherby For Western Hunts (2026)

The Weatherby Model 307 Alpine MDT Carbon is the best lightweight Weatherby for western hunts because it packs a carbon barrel, a folding MDT HNT26 chassis, a TriggerTech Field trigger and a self timing brake into a 6.6 pound rifle. Our reviewer said Weatherby has joined the club of factory rifles that read like a custom western build.

He tested it in 7 PRC from 112 yards because of his range’s target stands. Hornady Precision Hunter 175 grain ELD-X printed a 0.79 MOA five shot group, or 0.39 MOA for four shots with what he believes was his own pulled flyer. Then he spent more than 50 rounds on steel from 300 to 1,100 yards. He liked the Accubrake DST and the tool-less bolt takedown and said he had no real complaints, though he was getting sore after nearly 100 rounds in one sitting. MSRP is $3,699 (2026), up from $3,499 at the time of review (2024).

Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Carbon: Best Weatherby Mountain Rifle (2026)

The Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Carbon is the best Weatherby mountain rifle because it combines a carbon fiber barrel, a 20 ounce Peak 44 Blacktooth stock and the Mark V action in a rifle that starts at about 4.7 pounds depending on configuration. Our reviewer’s 6.5 Creedmoor test rifle weighed only 6.75 pounds with a rail, scope and four rounds.

Every one of his four shot groups with Hornady 143 grain Precision Hunter landed under 1 inch, and his best was 0.44 inch. All of the Hornady loads he tried were sub-MOA. The trigger broke at 3.5 pounds and adjusts from 2.5 to 5 pounds. MSRP ran from $2,699 for the base Backcountry 2.0 to $3,599 for the Ti at the time of review (2022), which he admitted is a lot of cheddar. The Backcountry 2.0 Carbon lists at $3,299 MSRP in 2026. His argument is that it is an investment for hunters who climb.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 6.5 Creedmoor (as tested); Weatherby magnums also offered
  • Barrel: carbon fiber
  • Stock: Peak 44 Blacktooth carbon, 20 oz
  • Trigger: 3.5 lb as tested, adjustable 2.5 to 5 lb

Pros

  • Extremely light
  • Every test group under 1 inch
  • Lightest production carbon stock at the time
  • Adjustable trigger

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Light rifles kick, even in 6.5 Creedmoor
  • Older 2022 review

Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti: Best Weatherby Magnum For Sheep And Elk Country (2026)

The Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti is the best Weatherby magnum for sheep and elk country because it keeps the ultralight Backcountry recipe and adds a titanium action, chambered in big cartridges like the 300 Weatherby Magnum our reviewer tested. MSRP is $3,499 (2026), up from a $3,449 starting price at the time of review (2023).

He liked the Peak 44 Blacktooth stock, the rigid 3DHEX recoil pad that still tamed the magnum recoil, the Accubrake and the deeper fluted bolt, which he said made cycling noticeably smooth. Accuracy was less impressive than our carbon test rifle: the ammunition he used grouped around 1.0 to 1.5 MOA. His only real dislike was the lever style safety. He prefers the recessed sliding safety on the Vanguard, though he said it worked without issue.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 300 Weatherby Magnum (as tested)
  • Action: Mark V, titanium
  • Stock: Peak 44 Blacktooth carbon with 3DHEX pad
  • Barrel: 22 to 26 in by caliber, Accubrake
  • Price: $3,499 MSRP (2026); from $3,449 at the time of review (2023)

Pros

  • Ultralight magnum
  • Recoil pad and brake tame the 300 Wby
  • Very smooth bolt

Cons

  • Grouped 1.0 to 1.5 MOA with the ammo tested
  • Lever style safety
  • Most expensive Backcountry

Weatherby Vanguard Badlands: Best Budget Weatherby (2026)

The Weatherby Vanguard Badlands is the best budget Weatherby because it gives you the Vanguard sub-MOA guarantee, a two stage trigger, a Cerakote finish and a camo synthetic stock for $869 MSRP in 2026, up from $799 at the time of review (2020). If you have been searching for a Weatherby Vanguard, this is the one we have tested most recently.

Our reviewer tested it in 25-06 Remington during scorching Texas heat, with a barrel that never really got a chance to cool. It still shot sub-MOA average groups with two of the five loads, and it clearly liked 100 grain bullets. The two stage trigger broke at 3 pounds 3 ounces and felt lighter, and the three position safety lets you cycle rounds with the safety on. At about 7.5 pounds it is light enough to carry all day.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 25-06 Rem. (as tested)
  • Barrel: 24 in, #2 contour, 1:10 twist
  • Finish: Burnt Bronze Cerakote
  • Stock: synthetic, Badlands Approach camo
  • Capacity: 4+1
  • Trigger: two stage, adjustable 2.5 to 3.8 lb
  • Weight: about 7.5 lb
  • Price: $869 MSRP (2026); $799 at the time of review (2020)

Pros

  • Affordable Weatherby
  • Sub-MOA averages with two loads in brutal heat
  • Good two stage trigger
  • Three position safety

Cons

  • Picky about ammo
  • Older 2020 review
  • No sights; drilled and tapped only

Weatherby Model 307 Range XP: Best Used Weatherby Model 307 (2026)

The Weatherby Model 307 Range XP is the best used Weatherby Model 307 because it gives you a familiar Remington 700 style action, an easy to adjust TriggerTech Field trigger and a huntable 22 inch barrel for about $1,190 retail at the time of review (2025). Weatherby has since moved the original Range XP to its legacy rifles, last listed at $1,199 (2026), and the Range XP 2.0, our top pick, replaces it at $1,299 MSRP (2026). Our reviewer tested one in 7 PRC and said it looks odd, shoots right and is built to hunt.

He grew up on Model 700s and said running the 307 felt like a trip down memory lane, with smooth cycling and reliable feeding from the magazine and when single loading. He adjusted the trigger from close to 4 pounds down to just over 2 pounds with an Allen key, without pulling the stock. His best three shot group was 0.850 inch with Hornady Precision Hunter 175 grain ELD-X, while three other loads ran 1.25 to 1.29 inches. The complaints: no rail in the box, a 5 round AICS magazine that hangs low, a cheek riser that blocks bolt removal when raised, and an emblem that fell off the grip on shot five.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 7 PRC (as tested)
  • Barrel: 22 in, 1:8 twist, fluted mag sporter contour
  • Threads: 1/2Γ—28, brake and thread protector included
  • Magazine: 5 round AICS pattern
  • Trigger: TriggerTech Field, adjustable
  • Weight: 7.4 lb
  • Price: Discontinued (legacy); last listed at $1,199 (2026); $1,189.99 retail at the time of review (2025)

Pros

  • Familiar 700 style action
  • Trigger adjusts without removing the stock
  • Tool-less bolt disassembly
  • Brake and thread protector both included

Cons

  • Limited rail options; plan on the Peak 44 rail ($69 in 2025)
  • 5 round magazine hangs low
  • Cheek riser blocks bolt removal when raised
  • Emblem came loose on the test rifle

Weatherby Mark V First Lite: Best Used Classic Mark V Magnum (2026)

The Weatherby Mark V First Lite is the best used classic Mark V magnum because it pairs the traditional Weatherby action and a 257 Weatherby Magnum chambering with a camo stock, Cerakote finish and the modern sub-MOA guarantee that older Mark V rifles did not carry. MSRP was $2,600 at the time of review (2019), and Weatherby now lists the First Lite among its discontinued legacy rifles, so shop used.

Our reviewer said all four loads he tested printed sub-MOA best groups of 0.75 inch or less, and three of the four averaged under an inch. The one that did not missed by only 0.08 inch. The trigger broke at a hair over 3 pounds with barely perceptible take-up and adjusts down to 2.5 pounds. At 8.25 pounds with a 26 inch barrel it is heavier than the Backcountry rifles, which helps with magnum recoil. If you want the old school story, read our look back at a 1976 Mark V that still shoots sub-MOA.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 257 Wby. (as tested)
  • Barrel: 26 in, #3 contour, fluted, 1:10 twist
  • Finish: Flat Dark Earth Cerakote
  • Stock: First Lite Fusion camo
  • Capacity: 3+1
  • Weight: 8.25 lb
  • Price: Discontinued (legacy); last known $2,600 MSRP (2019)

Pros

  • Every load had a best group of 0.75 inch or less
  • Clean 3 lb trigger
  • Classic Mark V action
  • Weight helps with recoil

Cons

  • Heavy for mountain hunts
  • Expensive magnum ammo
  • Older 2019 review; check current availability

Final Thoughts On The Best Weatherby Rifles Of 2026

The best Weatherby rifle for most hunters is the Model 307 Range XP 2.0, the current version of the 307 Range XP, at $1,299 MSRP in 2026. It has the 700 style action and an easy trigger, and in 25 Wby RPM it gives you flat trajectories with much less recoil than a full magnum. Western hunters who count ounces should look at the 307 Alpine MDT Carbon or the Mark V Backcountry 2.0, and the Backcountry Ti is the magnum for sheep and elk. On a budget, the Vanguard Badlands gets you the guarantee for $869 MSRP in 2026. If you shop used, the original 307 Range XP and the Mark V First Lite are both discontinued but worth finding.
