The best Walther pistols have a reputation built on two things: some of the best factory striker triggers ever made and a certain fictional British spy. Walther gave us the PPK, the P99 and the PPQ, and today its flagship is the PDP, a striker gun that takes the famous PPQ trigger and puts it in an optics ready, duty grade package.
Here is the honest part. GunsAmerica Digest has reviewed a lot of Walthers, but many of those reviews are old. Our PPS M2 and PPQ Subcompact reviews are from 2018, the Q5 Match SF review is from 2019, and the CCP review is from 2014. Our newest hands-on Walther reviews are the PDP Compact (2021), the full size PDP (2023), the P99 Final Edition (2024) and the WMP (dated 2026). We list the review year with every pick so you know how fresh the testing is, and we flag models whose status has changed since.
That still gives you real range data. One reviewer ran a PDP Compact with stock sights, raised sights and several red dots through slow groups and mag dumps with zero malfunctions. Another shot a .40 inch group with the .22 Magnum WMP. Another shot a Q5 Match SF in front of a full class and Massad Ayoob before his first warm-up shot.
If you are cross shopping Walther against Glock, Sig and the rest, see our best Glock alternatives, which covers the PDP head to head with other strikers. Start with the buyer’s guide, then jump to the picks. Prices are current manufacturer MSRP checked in October 2026, with the price at the time of review noted where it helps, and discontinued models show their last known price and sit at the end of the list as picks worth finding used.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Walther Pistols In 2026
Walther’s lineup spans striker duty guns, a steel frame race gun, classic double action pistols and rimfires, so start with the job.
PDP, PPQ Or P99
The PDP is Walther’s current striker flagship, with the Performance Duty Trigger, an optics cut slide and a more aggressive grip texture than the PPQ. It comes on a compact frame with 15 round magazines or a full size frame with 18 rounders, in 4, 4.5 and 5 inch barrels. Walther also announced a slimmer PDP F-Series for everyday carry at $699 suggested retail in 2022 and showed a PDP Pro-X PMM starting at $999 at SHOT Show 2025; we have news coverage of those, not hands-on reviews. The PPQ and P99 are the older designs that built the trigger reputation.
Carry Size
For concealed carry, the single stack PPS M2 and the PPQ Subcompact were our testers’ picks, though both reviews are from 2018. The PDP Compact is the bigger, higher capacity carry option. For brand versus brand carry picks, see our best concealed carry handguns.
Optics Ready
The PDP, Q5 Match SF and WMP all have optics cut slides. Our PDP Compact reviewer noted the adapter plates come after purchase, so you request the one you need, and the WMP ships with two plates. The P99 Final Edition is not practical for a red dot. For dot recommendations, see our best pistol red dots.
The PPK Situation
If you want a PPK or PPK/S, know that in late 2025 Walther paused production of the PPK, PPK/S and PP series for a multi-year modernization. Walther said it had shipped every unit of the current generation, so new ones are whatever dealers still have, and used guns are the main source until the updated model ships. For other .380 options, see our best .380 pistols.
Trigger And Grip
Walther triggers are the selling point. Our PDP reviewer measured 4.6 pounds on average and said it was better than some aftermarket triggers. The trade off on older Walthers is grip texture. Our PPS M2 reviewer wanted a rougher grip, and our P99 reviewer had the pistol shift in his sweaty hands in 100 degree heat.
Best Walther Pistols Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup
Walther PDP Full Size 4.5 Inch: Best Walther Pistol Overall (2026)
The Walther PDP Full Size 4.5 Inch is the best Walther pistol overall because it pairs the Performance Duty Trigger with an 18 round full size frame, an optics cut slide and a modular backstrap. Our reviewer called it an excellent pistol that checks all the right boxes. Review year: 2023.
Read our full Walther PDP series review here.
He mounted a Trijicon RMR Type 2 with a 3.25 MOA dot and said a lip at the base of the grip dips the muzzle slightly, which helped him pick up the dot instead of hunting for it. The trigger broke at 4.6 pounds on average, repeatable and predictable, and he said it is better than some aftermarket triggers he has tested. Walther lists the PDP Full Size 4.5 inch at $699 MSRP in 2026. For how the PDP compares with other strikers, see our Glock alternatives guide linked above.

Walther PDP Compact 4 Inch: Best Walther For Duty And Carry (2026)
The Walther PDP Compact 4 Inch is the best Walther for duty and carry because it keeps the PDP trigger and optics cut slide on a 15 round compact frame. Our reviewer called the 4 inch compact a tack driver and triple tap machine. Review year: 2021, so it is five years old.
Read our full Walther PDP Compact review here.
He shot it with stock sights, with raised XS steel sights and with more than one red dot, through slow deliberate groups and mag dumps, with zero malfunctions. He said the grip texture is far superior to the PPQ’s, and that the PDP takes Glock pattern sights, which opens up a huge aftermarket. One quirk: the slide is cut for optics, but you request the adapter plate you need after purchase. Walther lists the PDP Compact 4 inch at $699 MSRP in 2026.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Barrel: 4 in (as tested)
- Capacity: 15 rounds flush

Walther WMP: Best Walther Rimfire Pistol (2026)
The Walther WMP is the best Walther rimfire pistol because it gives you a 15+1 round .22 WMR in a full size, optics ready pistol with ambidextrous controls for $499 MSRP in 2026 on Walther’s site; our reviewer listed $549 at the time of review (2026). Our reviewer, Brian McCombie, put more than 250 rounds through it and called it accurate, comfortable and ridiculously fun.
Read our full Walther WMP review here.
At 12 yards from a rest he shot a .40 inch group with Winchester varmint ammo, and he used it on varmints at 25 yards. It comes with two 15 round magazines and two optic plates, and he ran a Trijicon RMR on it. His knocks were minor: the Quad Release takedown solves a problem some shooters never had, the full size gun is not discreet, and .22 WMR would not be his first choice for home defense. For more rimfire magnums, see our best .22 Magnum guns.
Key Specs
- Caliber: .22 WMR
- Capacity: 15+1, two magazines
- Barrel: 4.5 in steel
- Weight: 27.8 oz with empty magazine
- Optics: ready, two adapter plates included
- Review year: 2026
- Price: $499 MSRP (2026); $549 at the time of review (2026)
Pros
- .40 inch best group
- 15+1 capacity
- Optics plates included
- Minimal recoil
Cons
- Full size, not discreet
- Quad Release takedown is unusual
- Not a first choice for defense

Walther PPS M2: Best Single Stack Walther (2026)
The Walther PPS M2 is the best single stack Walther because our reviewer said it outshines other slim nines with fantastic reliability and superb accuracy. No matter what ammo he loaded, it fed, fired and ejected every time. Review year: 2018, so this is an older review. It is still in the lineup at $449 to $499 MSRP in 2026.
Read our full Walther PPS M2 review here.
He loved the big, bright white dot metal sights, which he could see in low light with a flashlight in his support hand, and he said the gun is so thin and balanced you just enjoy shooting it. His one gripe was a grip texture that should be rougher, though he said his shooting never suffered for it and the smooth texture does not snag cover garments. We also ran the PPS M2 when it launched in 2016.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Type: single stack striker fired
- Sights: metal, white three dot
- Review year: 2018
- Price: $449 (7 round) to $499 (8 round) MSRP (2026)
Pros
- Reliable with every load tested
- Excellent sights
- Thin and balanced
Cons
- Grip texture could be rougher
- Review is from 2018

Walther PPK: Best Classic Walther (2026)
The Walther PPK is the best classic Walther because the nearly century old double action .380 is still, as our reviewer put it, able to compete with modern designs. He tested a new Walther PPK side by side with an older Interarms gun, and both functioned flawlessly. Review year: 2020. Status: Walther paused PPK, PPK/S and PP production in late 2025 for a redesign, so new guns are leftover dealer stock.
Read our full Walther PPK review here.
The double action pull was heavy at around 16 pounds, with a little grit, and the single action pull was a few ounces over 4 pounds. At seven yards his five shot groups averaged 0.74 inch with Hornady Critical Defense, with a 0.40 inch best from Remington Golden Saber. Price was $849 at the time of review (2020); Walther lists the PPK at $969 MSRP in 2026, though production is paused. One warning from the review: a friend’s new PPK and PPK/S both had stiff safeties that needed a gunsmith.
Key Specs
- Caliber: .380 ACP
- Barrel: 3.3 in
- Length: 6.1 in
- Weight: 19 oz
- Capacity: 6 rounds, two magazines
- Trigger: about 16 lb DA, just over 4 lb SA
- Status: production paused in late 2025
- Review year: 2020
- Price: $969 MSRP (2026); $849 at the time of review (2020)
Pros
- Flawless function
- 0.40 inch best group at 7 yards
- Steel frame softens .380 recoil
- Timeless design
Cons
- Heavy double action pull
- Production paused
- Some new guns needed safety work

Walther CCP: Best Budget Walther (2026)
The Walther CCP is the best budget Walther because it brought a soft shooting gas delayed blowback 9mm to market at an MSRP of $469 in black and $489 in stainless at the time of review (2014). Our reviewer said it is priced exceptionally well and uses design features rarely seen in 9mm pistols. Review year: 2014, the oldest review here. Walther lists the current CCP at $499 MSRP in 2026.
Read our full Walther CCP review here.
The only malfunction he had was one slide that did not lock back on an empty magazine. He said he would like to see a CCP that had gone through high round count testing to see how the design held up. Walther later issued a recall on some CCP pistols in 2017 and introduced the CCP M2. If you want a newer budget Walther, our reviewers also tested the Walther Creed at a $399 suggested retail in 2016.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Operating system: gas delayed blowback
- Review year: 2014
- Price: $499 MSRP (2026); $469 black, $489 stainless at the time of review (2014)
Pros
- Soft shooting design

- Oldest review here (2014)
- Unproven at high round counts in our test
- 2017 safety recall on some CCPs

Walther Q5 Match SF: Best Used Walther For Competition (2026)
The Walther Q5 Match SF is the best used Walther for competition because it puts the PPQ style trigger, an optics ready slide and a steel frame that soaks up recoil into a pistol that ships with three 17 round magazines and three optic adapter plates. Review year: 2019, so this is seven years old. Walther no longer lists the Q5 Match SF; its successor, the PDP Steel Frame Match, lists at $2,399 MSRP in 2026.
Read our full Walther Q5 Match SF review here.
Our reviewer’s first 60 rounds came with a full class watching, a YouTuber filming and Massad Ayoob competing against him. For accuracy he shot from a rest at 23 yards. With a mix of ball and hollow points, groups averaged just over 2.5 inches with a Holosun HS507C and under 2 inches with the iron sights, and SIG V-Crown 124 grain made the best three shot group at 0.573 inch. The trigger measured 4 pounds. See our best out of the box competition guns for other options.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Frame: steel
- Capacity: 17 rounds, three magazines included

Walther P99 Final Edition: Best Used Walther For Collectors (2026)
The Walther P99 Final Edition is the best used Walther for collectors because it is the send off for the pistol that introduced so many shooters to Walther, packaged as a final run. Our reviewer said it remains a fantastic gun that never got the recognition it deserved in the States. Review year: 2024. The limited run launched at $849 MSRP in 2023 and has ended, so expect to find one on the used market.
Read our full Walther P99 Final Edition review here.
It has a 4 inch barrel, weighs 24 ounces and holds 15 rounds. The trigger now works as a two stage design, and he said it is not blocky and does not pinch, and he could drill an inch wide circle at five yards with ease. It ate brass and steel case ammo without a problem. The catch: in 100 degree, 71 percent humidity Florida heat, the 1997 era grip texture let the gun shift in his sweaty hands, and he had to fix his grip every ten or so rounds. It is also not practical for a red dot.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Barrel: 4 in
- Length: 7.1 in
- Weight: 24 oz
- Capacity: 15 rounds
- Review year: 2024
- Price: Discontinued limited run; launched at $849 MSRP (2023)
Pros
- Collectible final run
- Smooth two stage trigger
- Ran brass and steel case ammo
Cons
- Slick grip in heat
- Not optics friendly
- Limited run

Walther PPQ Subcompact: Best Used Double Stack Walther For Carry (2026)
The Walther PPQ Subcompact is the best used double stack Walther for carry because it brings the famous PPQ trigger and 10 or 15 round magazines to a 3.5 inch barreled, 21.2 ounce pistol. Our reviewer said he was not aware of a more comfortable gun designed for concealed carry. Review year: 2018, so this review is eight years old, and Walther has since discontinued the PPQ line, so look for one used.
Read our full Walther PPQ Subcompact review here.
His trigger broke cleanly at 5.7 pounds with a crisp 0.1 inch reset. It was not flawless at first: his gun had a return to battery issue, Walther diagnosed a magazine sleeve that could be slightly out of spec and sent a new one, and after that the pistol never failed to return to battery. Walther did not list an MSRP then, and he found the standard version on GunsAmerica for just under $600 in 2018, with night sights about $50 more.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Barrel: 3.5 in
- Capacity: 10 or 15 rounds
- Trigger: 5.7 lb as tested, 0.1 in reset
- Weight: 21.2 oz empty
- Review year: 2018
- Price: Discontinued; last known $649 MSRP (2018); just under $600 street at the time of review (2018)
Pros
- Very comfortable carry grip
- Crisp trigger and short reset
- 15 round option
Cons
- Return to battery issue until a new mag sleeve
- Discontinued; buy used

Final Thoughts On The Best Walther Pistols Of 2026
The best Walther pistol for most shooters is the full size PDP, with an 18 round frame, an optics cut and a trigger our reviewer called better than some aftermarket units. The PDP Compact is the carry and duty pick, and the WMP is the fun and accurate rimfire. The PPS M2 is the slim single stack, though that review is from 2018. The PPK is the classic, with production paused. The CCP is the budget pick from a 2014 review. The Q5 Match SF race gun, the P99 Final Edition and the PPQ Subcompact are discontinued but worth finding used.
