The best over under shotguns of 2026 do one thing better than any pump or semi-auto ever built: they give you two instant shots with two different chokes, from a gun you can break open and prove empty at a glance. That is why the stack-barrel double owns the sporting clays course, the trap line, and the upland field. It is also why so many guys who start with a pump end up with an O/U in the safe a few years later. Once you shoot a good one, you get it.
I am a rifle guy at heart, but I have been humbled on enough clays courses to respect what a well-fit shotgun does. The O/U points like your finger. It balances between your hands. It never short strokes, never needs a gas system cleaned, and handles any load you feed it, from light target loads to heavy turkey shells. The downside is price. Quality over unders run from a few hundred dollars for Turkish imports to five figures for competition guns, and the difference is not always obvious from the gun counter.
Every shotgun on this list has a GunsAmerica Digest review behind it. The specs, prices, pattern notes, and field results come from those tests, from Alaska ptarmigan hunts to Colorado turkey patterning to chukar hills with a gundog. Some reviews are older, and I say so where it matters. If you need a duck gun, see our best waterfowl shotguns guide, and for spring gobblers see our best turkey shotguns list. This guide is about the stack barrel.
Here are seven of the best over under shotguns you can buy, from budget field guns to a dedicated clays gun. Read the buyer’s guide first so you buy for fit, not just for wood.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Over Under Shotguns In 2026
Over unders look alike from ten feet away. Up close, they are built for very different jobs. Here is how to sort them.
Field Gun Or Target Gun
Field guns are lighter, often 6 to 7.5 pounds, with 26 or 28-inch barrels, so you can carry them all day. Target guns for sporting clays and trap are heavier, often near 8 pounds, with 30 or 32-inch barrels and adjustable combs. Weight soaks up recoil over hundreds of shells. Light weight is a blessing on a long walk and a punishment on the trap line.
Gauge
The 12 gauge does everything and has the widest ammo selection. The 20 gauge is the upland favorite, lighter and softer. The 28 gauge and .410 are a joy for doves, quail, and skeet, but ammo costs more and is harder to find.
Ejectors Or Extractors
Ejectors kick fired hulls out when you open the action and leave unfired shells in place. Extractors just lift the shells so you pull them by hand. Ejectors are faster for reloading, and they used to be a premium feature. Some budget guns now include them.
Chokes
Screw-in chokes let you set the top and bottom barrels differently, like Improved Cylinder for the first shot and Modified for the second. Check which choke pattern the gun uses so you can buy extended or specialty tubes later.
Fit And Stock Adjustment
Fit is everything with a shotgun. Your eye is the rear sight. If the gun does not come up with your eye aligned down the rib, you will miss. Length of pull, drop at comb, and cast all matter. Adjustable combs, like Beretta’s B-Fast, let you tune it.
Where It Is Made
Most affordable over unders are built in Turkey. Some are excellent and some are not. Premium guns from Browning, Beretta, and Benelli cost more but usually hold value, have better parts support, and last generations.

Browning Citori 825 Field: Best for Overall Upland Hunting (2026)
The Citori 825 Field is Browning’s newest version of the most popular over under line in America, and our reviewer took it to Alaska before launch to beat on it. It is new for 2025, 12 gauge only at first, and Browning told our reviewer the 825 will eventually replace the Citori 725. His test gun had Grade II/III gloss oil walnut, gloss blued 26-inch barrels, a silver nitride receiver, a 14-1/4 inch length of pull, and weighed 7.4 pounds empty. He fired over 200 shells in the first week with no mechanical problems, then shot two ten-bird limits of ptarmigan on consecutive days with #6 and #4 steel. He fell twice on the tundra with it, got mud in the barrels, and it kept running. Seven hunters in camp shot high volume for a week and nobody had a mechanical. Our review lists no price.

Browning Citori 725 Field 28 Gauge: Best for Doves And Small Gauge Fans (2026)
Our reviewer said he will never part with this gun, and that it is one of only three guns he has owned that felt made for him. The Citori 725 brought a low-profile receiver that puts your eye closer to the bore axis, a mechanical trigger instead of the old inertia design, Vector Pro lengthened forcing cones, and Invector-DS chokes. His 28 gauge Field had 28-inch barrels (26 inches is available), measured 45-3/4 inches long, and handles 2-3/4 and 3-inch shells. He broke his first two crossing clays with Winchester steel #6s, then ran Federal Top Gun, Remington STS, and Federal Prairie Storm loads, and found Browning’s 50/50 point of impact to be legit. He also used it on a September dove limit. The only warning is ammo: 28 gauge can be hard to find. Our review lists no price.

Beretta 692 Sporting B-Fast: Best for Sporting Clays And Trap (2026)
If you shoot a lot of targets, you want weight, long barrels, and an adjustable stock, and the Beretta 692 Sporting B-Fast is the one we tested. It filled the gap between Beretta’s standard guns and the five-figure DT-11. The B-Fast comb gives near infinite height adjustment, and 20 gram weights can go into the stock to tune the balance point. Our test gun had 32-inch Steelium barrels, a wide tapered rib mounted low, a slightly wider receiver to center the weight, and weighed about 7.8 pounds. It came with five Optima Bore HP chokes: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Skeet. Our reviewer measured the trigger at a consistent three pounds on the lower barrel and exactly four pounds on the upper. The review dates to 2014, so check current models and pricing.

Benelli 828U: Best for Lightweight 12 Gauge (2026)
Benelli did not build a copy of anybody’s over under. The 828U uses an aluminum receiver with a steel locking insert, so you get steel-on-steel where it counts and light alloy everywhere else. The opening lever sits to the far left, the rib is carbon fiber, and the barrel selector shows a red dot for the first barrel and a white dot for the second. Our reviewer measured the trigger at a hair under four pounds on the lower barrel and about five on the upper. The 26-inch gun weighs about 6.5 pounds and the 28-inch about 6.6. He called it a great field gun that mounts beautifully and balances right on the hinge, but warned you will feel the recoil even with the Progressive Comfort system. It would be a joy to carry, less so for a 200 target trap match. The review dates to 2015.

Browning Cynergy Ultimate Turkey: Best for Turkey Hunting (2026)
An over under makes a great turkey gun, because you get two chokes on tap to match the range to the bird. The Browning Cynergy Ultimate Turkey is a 3.5-inch chambered 12 gauge that weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces empty in our test. The Cynergy action has no hammers. It is striker-fired, which our reviewer credits for a trigger with a little take-up and a crisp break around 6 pounds. The barrels are back bored with lengthened forcing cones, and the gun came with Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder, Ultimate Spreader, and Ultimate Full Turkey chokes, plus a green fiber optic front sight. He patterned Federal turkey loads in Colorado wind at 25 yards and 30 feet with good results and said it makes a fine all-around shotgun too. The review dates to 2017.

Silver Eagle Light Super 20: Best for Budget Upland With Ejectors (2026)
Our reviewer called the Silver Eagle Light Super 20 the best value O/U he had come across, and he carried it on long chukar hunts behind his Drahthaar. It is a Turkish gun imported by TR Imports, with a steel alloy receiver scaled down to a true 20 gauge frame, and it weighs just 6 pounds 2 ounces. The big surprise at this price is ejectors instead of extractors. It also has Turkish walnut, 3-inch chambers, a manual tang safety and barrel selector, and five Benelli Mobil style chokes from Cylinder to Full. It came up fast for chukar and swung easily. He was honest that it is not as refined or adjustable as guns costing thousands. A 12 gauge version weighs 4 ounces more at the same price.

Stevens 555: Best for Budget Small Game (2026)
The Stevens 555 is Savage’s value over under, built in Turkey with a lightweight alloy receiver, matte black finish, and Turkish walnut, and offered in 12, 20, and 28 gauge and .410. Our reviewer tested a compact .410 that weighed just 5-1/2 pounds. It broke open stiff but not too stiff, as a new gun should, and uses Beretta/Benelli MobilChoke pattern tubes. With the Full choke and Winchester Super X #6s he averaged 38 pellets at 20 yards, evenly spread with no ragged holes. He had fond memories of a Stevens single shot .410 as his first squirrel gun and planned to use the 555 on squirrels and rabbits. This is a great starter or small game gun, not a clays workhorse. The review dates to 2017.

Final Thoughts On The Best Over Under Shotguns Of 2026
If you want one over under for birds and clays and can afford it, the Browning Citori 825 Field is the best over under shotgun on this list, proven in some of the nastiest bird country in North America. The Citori 725 Field in 28 gauge is the sweetest dove gun here. The Beretta 692 Sporting B-Fast is the dedicated target gun, the Benelli 828U is the lightest 12 gauge, and the Cynergy Ultimate Turkey gives you two chokes for gobblers. On a budget, the Silver Eagle Light Super 20 brings ejectors for under $600 at time of review, and the Stevens 555 is a solid small game starter.
