Best 20 Gauge Shotguns (2026): Upland, Dove, Youth and Home Defense

in GA Guides, Shotguns

The 20 gauge is the shotgun most people should probably own first, and plenty of 12 gauge shooters would be happier with one. It weighs less, it kicks less and it still kills birds and stops threats when you do your part. Our Stevens 320 reviewer estimated felt recoil at about half of an equivalent 12 gauge load across birdshot, buckshot and slugs. That is a big deal for new shooters, smaller shooters and anybody who wants to shoot a full day of doves without a sore shoulder.

The best 20 gauge shotguns of 2026 cover a lot of ground, so this list does too. There is a 5.9-pound over-under for walking all day after chukar, a Beretta semi-auto built for the duck marsh, an Italian side-by-side that breaks clays like it was born to, and two pump guns for home defense, including one with a 13-inch length of pull that fits youth and smaller adults.

Every pick was shot by a GunsAmerica Digest writer, on chukar hillsides, sporting clays courses, patterning boards and defensive drills. A couple of these guns have been updated since our reviews, and the picks below tell you which ones.

If you already know you want two barrels, our best over-under shotguns guide goes deeper. For 12 gauge defensive guns, see our best home defense shotguns.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best 20 Gauge Shotguns In 2026

A 20 gauge is not just a smaller 12. Pick the action and weight for how you will actually use it.

Best 20 Gauge Shotgun For Dove And Bird Hunting

For upland birds you walk after, weight is everything. A gun under 6 pounds, like the CZ Upland Ultralight All-Terrain at 5.9 pounds, carries easily all day. For dove fields where you sit and shoot a lot, a semi-auto soaks up recoil and gives you a third shot. Over-unders and side-by-sides are lighter and simpler but send all of the recoil to your shoulder.

Best 20 Gauge Shotgun For Duck Hunting

A 20 gauge will kill ducks over decoys if you keep shots reasonable. Our Beretta reviewer pointed out that a 3-inch 20 gauge #4 load carries about 120 pellets at 1,300 fps, against about 134 at 1,350 fps for a 3-inch 12 gauge. Roughly 10 percent fewer pellets. Pick a gas gun with a weatherproof finish. More options are in our best waterfowl shotguns guide.

Best 20 Gauge Shotgun For Home Defense

A 20 gauge pump with buckshot is a serious defensive tool, and lighter recoil means faster follow-up shots for a lot of people. Look for an 18.5 to 20 inch barrel, good sights and a magazine that holds at least five shells. Pattern your buckshot at indoor distances before you trust it.

Best 20 Gauge Shotgun For Youth

Length of pull matters more than gauge for a young or small shooter. Most adult stocks run around 14 to 14.5 inches. The Mossberg 500 Special Purpose 20 has a 13-inch pull, which is too short for a 6-foot-4 adult but just right for many kids and smaller adults. Fit beats everything else.

Chokes And Shells

Screw-in chokes let one gun do several jobs. Improved cylinder works for close flushes and home defense, modified for most dove shooting and tighter chokes for longer shots. Not every choke is steel rated, so check before you shoot steel waterfowl loads. For turkey-specific 20 gauge setups, see our best turkey shotguns.

A Budget Over-Under Alternative

If you want two barrels for under $1,000 and the CZ is not your style, the Silver Eagle Light Super 20 is worth a look. Our Silver Eagle field test covers it, and it is a pick in our over-under guide, so we did not repeat it here.

CZ Upland Ultralight All-Terrain 20: Best 20 Gauge Shotgun Overall (2026)

Our reviewer carried this over-under dozens of miles in the hills after chukar, quail, grouse, squirrels, turkeys and rabbits, and said it made him a better wing shooter. At 5.9 pounds, it weighed less than his nephew’s single-shot 20 gauge. The receiver is aluminum, the stocks are slim Turkish walnut, and part of the buttstock is hollowed out to save more weight.

Read our full CZ Upland Ultralight All-Terrain review here.

The All-Terrain version adds OD green Cerakote on the receiver and barrels, 28-inch barrels instead of 26, and magnetic extractors that keep shells from falling out when you walk with the gun open. The single trigger broke at an average of 4 pounds, 14 ounces on both barrels, and a cast-off stock lined up his eye on the rib immediately.

Five chokes come in the case, from cylinder to full. CZ imports the gun from Huglu in Turkey, and the MSRP was $919 at the time of review in 2021. CZ has dropped the 12 gauge version, but the 20 gauge is still listed. For the best 20 gauge shotgun for bird hunting under $1,000, start here.

Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus 20: Best 20 Gauge Semi-Auto For Waterfowl (2026)

Our reviewer moved to a 20 gauge for duck hunting after an atrial fibrillation diagnosis made him think hard about recoil. He compared the A400 Xtreme Plus 20 to his gas-operated Browning 12 gauge, which weighs 7.5 pounds against the Beretta’s 6.8, and found the 20 noticeably softer across loads, from light target shells to heavy waterfowl rounds.

Read our full Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus 20 review here.

Beretta stacks the deck with the B-Link gas system, Kick-Off Plus recoil reduction in a three-piece stock and Aqua-Tech Shield finish for the marsh. The charging handle and bolt release are oversized for gloved hands, the loading port is enlarged, and the gun comes with shims for eight drop and cast options. Five Optima HP chokes are included, though the full and improved modified are not steel rated.

Barrels come in 26, 28 and 30 inches, and the magazine is factory set for two shells with a one-shell plug included. MSRP was $2,049 at the time of review in 2023. It is the most expensive gun here, and for a lot of duck hunters it is the best 20 gauge shotgun for duck hunting you can buy. Compare it with the rest of the line in our best Beretta shotguns guide.

Key Specs

  • Action: B-Link gas-operated semi-auto
  • Barrel: 28 in tested; 26 and 30 in available; Steelium

FAIR Iside 20: Best 20 Gauge Side-By-Side (2026)

A side-by-side is supposed to be classy, and this one also breaks clays. Our reviewer, a semi-auto guy by habit, said the Iside mounted, pointed, tracked and broke birds well beyond his expectations, including flushers, crossers and a few overhead tower shots. A friend who runs a hunting preserve called it a fantastic little quail gun.

Read our full FAIR Iside 20 gauge review here.

It weighs 5 pounds, 8 ounces with 28-inch barrels and balances right over the hinge. FAIR machines the receiver from a solid monoblock, and the case-hardened finish, deep bluing and wood-to-metal fit looked far more expensive than the price. Screw-in chokes are standard, with three included. Both barrels patterned well with 7/8-ounce loads of 7 1/2 shot at 30 yards, and the double triggers broke cleanly once he got used to them.

MSRP was $1,450 at the time of review in 2017. FAIR has since replaced it with the Iside II, which IFG lists at $2,560 in 2026, so a used original is the value play. Good dove and quail gun. Not a waterfowl gun.

Key Specs

  • Action: side-by-side, double triggers, extractors
  • Chamber: 3 in
  • Barrels: 28 in
  • Length: 45.5 in
  • Weight: 5 lb 8 oz
  • Chokes: screw-in, 3 included
  • Price: $1,450 MSRP (2017 review); successor Iside II $2,560 MSRP (IFG, 2026)

Pros

  • Light and naturally pointing
  • Monoblock receiver, excellent fit
  • Screw-in chokes
  • Patterned well with light loads

Cons

  • Replaced by the pricier Iside II
  • Long 15 3/8 in pull to front trigger

Stevens 320 20 Gauge: Best Budget 20 Gauge For Home Defense (2026)

Our reviewer compared a 20 gauge home defense gun to light beer: most of the taste, about half the calories. He ran birdshot, buckshot and slugs through the Stevens 320 and estimated felt recoil at about half of an equivalent 12 gauge load. Even full-power slugs at 1,600 fps were pleasant from this 7-pound pump.

The 18.5-inch barrel keeps it handy indoors, and the tube holds five 2 3/4-inch shells of everything he tried, with a 3-inch chamber if you want it. The sights are proper defensive sights: a fiber optic front and an adjustable ghost ring rear, both protected by steel wings. Dual action bars kept the pump smooth with no binding, and the trigger broke at a consistent 5 3/4 pounds.

MSRP was $264 at the time of review in 2016, and Savage lists the 20 gauge 320 at $319 with ghost ring sights or $289 with a bead in 2026. It is the best 20 gauge shotgun for home defense on a budget, and there is not much else at this price we would trust as much.

Key Specs

  • Action: pump, dual action bars
  • Barrel: 18.5 in, 3 in chamber
  • Length: 38.25 in
  • Weight: 7 lb
  • Capacity: 5+1
  • Sights: ghost ring rear, fiber optic front
  • Trigger: 5 3/4 lb
  • Price: $264 MSRP (2016 review); $289 to $319 MSRP (Savage, 2026)

Pros

  • About half the recoil of a 12 gauge
  • Real defensive sights
  • Very affordable
  • Ran every load tested

Cons

  • One-piece stock and grip limits fit changes
  • Heavier than the Mossberg

Mossberg 500 Special Purpose 20: Best 20 Gauge Shotgun For Youth And Smaller Shooters (2026)

This is the Mossberg 500 home defense platform in a smaller, lighter 20 gauge package, and our reviewer called it the ideal platform for youth and smaller-framed shooters. It weighs 6 pounds and has a 13-inch length of pull. At 6 feet, 4 inches, he found the stock too short for himself, but his shooting partner put a ton of rounds through it with no trouble.

They ran it on paper and steel at 7, 25 and 100 yards, and through movement drills, shooting from cover, from their backs and even upside down. At 7 yards, there was no real need to aim. At 100, they could hit a torso plate with buckshot and slugs, though not reliably. The tall red-striped front blade and protected ghost ring rear were the highlight. The tested gun had a 20-inch cylinder bore barrel, a 3-inch chamber and room for 7 or 8 shells depending on length.

Mossberg listed it at $500 at the time of review in 2014. Mossberg still builds 20 gauge 500 defensive models, but the current ones we found use 18.5-inch barrels, so check the exact configuration. If you are setting up a first defensive shotgun for a smaller shooter, this is a good one.

Key Specs

  • Action: pump
  • Barrel: 20 in, cylinder bore (as tested)
  • Chamber: 3 in
  • Capacity: 7 or 8 depending on shell length
  • Length: 39 in
  • Length of pull: 13 in
  • Weight: 6 lb
  • Price: $500 list (2014 review)

Pros

  • Short 13-inch pull fits smaller shooters
  • Light at 6 pounds
  • Excellent sights
  • Familiar 500 controls

Cons

  • Stock too short for big adults
  • Current models use different barrel lengths

Final Thoughts On The Best 20 Gauge Shotguns Of 2026

If you want one 20 gauge for walking up birds, the CZ Upland Ultralight All-Terrain is the best 20 gauge shotgun on this list. It weighs 5.9 pounds, it shrugs off weather and it costs less than $1,000. Duck hunters who want a soft-shooting gas gun should buy the Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus 20, and anybody who loves a side-by-side should hunt down a FAIR Iside.

For home defense, the Stevens 320 gives you real sights and half the recoil of a 12 gauge for very little money. The Mossberg 500 Special Purpose 20 fits smaller shooters better than almost anything else, thanks to its 13-inch pull.
