Best .410 Shotguns (2026): Small Game, Turkey and Fun

in GA Guides

Most of us met the .410 as a kid’s gun. A pop can killer. The little shotgun Grandpa kept behind the door for snakes. Brian McCombie thought the same thing for decades, right up until hunters started killing turkeys with it at 30 yards and beyond.

The .410 never got more powerful. The ammunition got better. Tungsten Super Shot loads pack dense, small pellets into a tiny hull and hold tight patterns far past what lead ever could. Meanwhile, the guns themselves got more interesting. You can buy a .410 lever action with a side gate, a semi-auto turkey gun with a red dot rail or an AR-15 upper that turns your rifle into a shotgun.

None of that changes the basic math. A .410 holds a lot less shot than a 12 gauge, so it demands better shooting and closer ranges. What it gives back is light weight, mild recoil and a lot of fun. That makes the best 410 shotgun a great choice for small game, a careful turkey hunter, a new shooter or anyone who just likes to shoot.

Every gun on this list was patterned or hunted by a GunsAmerica Digest reviewer, and every one is still sold. We cover a lever gun, a turkey semi-auto, a single shot and an AR upper. If you are shopping for a dedicated turkey gun in any gauge, also see our best turkey shotguns guide. Prices are labeled as the maker’s current number or the price at the time of the review.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a .410 Shotgun in 2026

Know What the .410 Can and Cannot Do

A .410 shell carries about a half ounce to roughly 13/16 of an ounce of shot. A 12 gauge target load carries 1 1/8 ounces. The pellets travel about as fast, but there are far fewer of them, so patterns thin out quickly. With ordinary lead loads, plan on 20 to 25 yards for small game and clays. With TSS turkey loads and a tight choke, our reviewer was comfortable to 30 yards and saw lethal patterns at 40. Know your limit before you pull the trigger.

Chokes Make or Break It

Choke matters more on a .410 than any other bore because there is so little shot to waste. Guns with interchangeable chokes let you open up for close squirrels and tighten down for turkeys. A fixed cylinder bore barrel, like the one on the Henry lever action, spreads shot fast and works best close or with slugs and buckshot.

Shell Length and Ammo Cost

.410 shells come in 2 1/2 and 3 inch lengths, and some guns only take the shorter shell. Read the barrel. The AR-style upper on this list also limits overall shell length, so some buckshot loads will not fit the magazine. Be ready for the price, too. A box of .410 often costs more than 12 gauge, and TSS turkey loads are expensive. Buy enough to pattern your gun with the exact load you plan to hunt with.

Action Type and Fit

Single shots are simple, light and cheap, and they teach new shooters to make the first shot count. Lever actions and semi-autos give fast follow-ups. If you are buying the best 410 shotgun for youth, check length of pull and weight carefully. A full-size single shot can be too long for a small kid. Light weight cuts both ways: easy to carry, but more recoil than you expect with heavy loads in a tiny gun.

Sights and Optics

A bead is all you need for flying targets and close squirrels. Turkey hunting is different because you aim a .410 like a rifle at a still head and neck. A red dot or a rail for one pays off there. Our turkey pick wore a Leupold red dot with a 1 MOA dot, and our reviewer used it to plot his ranges before the hunt. Buckhorn or peep sights help with slugs but can be distracting on clays. Pick the sighting system that matches the game you hunt most.

A Word on Home Defense

The .410 is not our first choice for defending your home. A 20 or 12 gauge carries far more payload with manageable recoil. If you are shopping for that job, read our best home defense shotguns guide before you decide.

The 4 Best .410 Shotguns of 2026

Henry .410 Side Gate: Best Overall (2026)

Jordan Michaels said it plainly: if you are looking for a .410, you will not find a better option than Henry’s lever action. It is American made, beautiful and handy, with a 19.8-inch barrel and a 38.1-inch overall length that makes it shorter than most shotguns. It points naturally and has a trigger that helps keep shots on target.

Read our full Henry .410 Side Gate review here.

Like all Henry Side Gate guns, it loads through the gate or the removable brass tube. Jordan used the tube to load and unload fast and the gate to top off a round or two. The barrel is cylinder bore with no choke option, which limits range. With 1/2-ounce No. 6 and No. 9 loads, patterns exceeded 30 inches past 20 yards and shrank to about 5 inches at 15. Slugs are where it shines. From a sled, it grouped 4 to 5 inches at 50 yards, and from a table he hit a 10-inch steel plate consistently at 75. It took him about 50 shells to adapt to the lever on clays. It takes 2 1/2-inch shells only and holds six.

Escort PS Turkey Hunter .410: Best for Turkey Hunting (2026)

This is the gun that changed Brian McCombie’s mind about the .410. The Escort PS Turkey Hunter is a gas-operated semi-auto imported by Hatsan USA, with a 24-inch hard-chrome-lined barrel, three extended chokes and a cantilever rail for an optic. It weighs six pounds and is only 44 inches long, so it is nimble in a blind and recoil was minimal.

Brian topped it with a Leupold red dot and patterned three TSS loads with the full choke. At 20 yards all three put around 20 pellets in the vitals. At 30 yards, Federal averaged 15, APEX 17 and Browning 19. He wants eight to ten pellets in the vitals of a big tom, and at 40 yards every load met that bar, with one Federal target showing 13 hits. Ordinary lead loads were spotty at 20, so do not cheap out on shells. He set a 30-yard limit for his first .410 hunt. MSRP was $499 at the time of the review. Escort still offers it in .410, and it is the best 410 shotgun for turkey hunting we have tested.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: .410, 3 in chamber
  • Action: Gas-operated semi-auto
  • Barrel: 24 in, hard-chrome lined
  • Chokes: Full, Modified and Improved Cylinder, extended
  • Optics: Cantilever rail with cross-slots
  • Weight: 6 lb unloaded
  • Overall length: 44 in
  • MSRP: $499 (2020 review)

Pros

  • 8 to 13 TSS pellets in the vitals at 40 yards in our test
  • Light and handy at 6 pounds
  • Three chokes and an optics rail
  • Minimal recoil

Cons

  • Needs expensive TSS loads for turkeys
  • Lead loads were spotty at 20 yards
  • Imported semi-auto may need more cleaning than a single shot

Stevens 301 Single Shot: Best Budget .410 (2026)

The Stevens 301 is the .410 you can afford to buy two of. Jordan Michaels shot the 301 in 12 gauge and .410 over several days and hundreds of rounds. In .410, it weighs 4.8 pounds, and the break-action design has so few moving parts that he called it nearly fail-proof. It breaks down into barrel, action and forend in seconds and fits in a backpack.

Read our full Stevens 301 review here.

Using a modified choke and 11/16-ounce Federal high-brass loads, the .410 threw a 12-inch spread at 15 yards and a 26-inch spread at 25. Those are squirrel and rabbit distances, which makes it a strong pick for the best 410 shotgun for squirrel hunting. The front bead was easy to see in fading light, and the light weight made it quick to handle. One warning: the standard-size 301 was a bit too big for Jordan’s nephew, so check fit before buying one for a small kid. MSRP was $173 at the time of the review, and Savage still builds the 301.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: .410 (also 12 and 20)
  • Action: Break-action single shot
  • Barrel: 26 in carbon steel, matte
  • Weight: 4.8 lb (.410)
  • Stock: Synthetic
  • MSRP: $173 (2017 review)

Pros

  • Nearly fail-proof simplicity
  • Light at 4.8 pounds
  • Even patterns at 15 and 25 yards in our test
  • Breaks down to fit a pack
  • Very low price

Cons

  • One shot only
  • Standard size was too big for a young shooter in our test
  • Thin recoil pad

Charles Daly AR .410: Best AR-Style .410 (2026)

Travis Pike wanted a shotgun that is actually an AR, not one that just looks like one. The Charles Daly AR .410 is a gas-operated upper that drops onto a mil-spec AR-15 lower, as long as you use the included Charles Daly buffer. It has a 19-inch barrel, a forward assist, last-round bolt hold open, flip-up sights and a half-length quad rail. Every control is pure AR.

Read our full Charles Daly AR .410 review here.

It ran better than Travis expected from a budget Turkish gas gun. Cheap Fiocchi birdshot and Aguila buckshot cycled well, and buckshot patterned nicely to 25 yards. His one malfunction came from over-inserting the magazine, which caused a first-round failure to eject. A quick tug down on the mag fixed it. It chambers 2 1/2-inch shells and needs an uncrimped length of 2.29 inches or less, so some buckshot will not fit. It ships with one five-round magazine, and 10 and 15 rounders are sold. He called it lightweight, light recoiling and a ton of fun, and he ordered two more magazines. Remember that you are buying an upper, not a complete gun.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: .410, 2 1/2 in chamber
  • Type: Gas-operated AR-15 upper receiver
  • Barrel: 19 in
  • Capacity: 5-round magazine included
  • Shell limit: 2.29 in uncrimped length
  • Sights: Flip-up
  • Requires: Mil-spec lower and included buffer

Pros

  • Real AR controls and accessories
  • Ran cheap birdshot and buckshot in our test
  • Light recoil and fast follow-ups
  • Buckshot patterned well to 25 yards

Cons

  • Upper only; you need a lower
  • Some buckshot is too long for the magazine
  • Magazine can be over-inserted

The Bottom Line on .410 Shotguns

Buy the Henry .410 Side Gate if you want one .410 that does a little of everything and looks good doing it. It is accurate with slugs, quick to load and built to last. Just keep shot ranges short.

Turkey hunters should buy the Escort PS Turkey Hunter and a box of TSS. Our testing proved the combination works at 30 yards and holds enough pellets at 40. The Stevens 301 is the cheapest way into the game and a great squirrel gun. The Charles Daly AR .410 is the fun one, as long as you already own a lower and pick your shells carefully.

Whatever you choose, pattern it with the load you will hunt with and respect its limits. A .410 rewards good shooting and punishes bad, so practice at the distances you plan to hunt and pass on shots that are too far. Shop new and used shotguns on GunsAmerica.com.
