Daniel Defense is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a look back at how a batch of 96 unwanted AR-15 uppers helped launch one of America’s best-known firearms manufacturers.
The company’s story began after founder Marty Daniel traded a bad day on the golf course for a trip to the shooting range. After buying his first AR-15, Daniel decided the rifle needed a better flat-top upper. A machine shop required a minimum order of 100, leaving him with 96 extras to sell online. He needed a name for the website, and Daniel Defense was born.
From there, the company moved into rails, barrels and eventually complete rifles. A major turning point came when Daniel Defense pursued a U.S. Special Operations Command rail contract. The development costs were steep enough that Daniel’s father reportedly put the family farm up as collateral. The company won the contract in 2005 and began shipping the rail system the following year.

Daniel Defense says it has since grown from five employees and a small garage-door shop into a nearly 500-person operation working under one 330,000-square-foot roof in Black Creek, Georgia. Its catalog now includes modern sporting rifles, bolt-action rifles, suppressors and handguns, while its customers reportedly include military units, federal agencies and more than 1,000 law enforcement organizations.

The company says its 25th year brought record employment, record revenue, a wave of new products and one of the largest federal firearms contracts in its history. Through all that growth, Daniel Defense continues to highlight its faith-driven mission, including closing on Sundays and employing an in-house chaplain.
It is a pretty remarkable climb from 96 spare uppers and a basic website. According to Daniel Defense, however, this anniversary is less about looking backward than preparing for whatever comes next.
As the company puts it: “It’s just the beginning.”
