Best Semi-Auto Shotguns for Hunting (2026): Doves to Geese

in GA Guides

A pump gun will kill anything a semi-auto will. Ask anyone who grew up with an 870. But the first time you swing on a pair of mallards and the second shot just happens, without the forend slamming back, you understand why most bird hunters end up carrying an autoloader. Less recoil, faster follow-ups and one less thing to think about when it counts.

The catch is that semi-autos are fussier than pumps. They have to cycle light dove loads in September and heavy steel in December, in mud, rain and sub-zero cold. They have to fit you, because a gun that does not fit will miss no matter how well it runs. And they have to keep running after a season of being tossed in a boat.

So what is the best semi-auto shotgun for hunting in 2026? We went through the field guns GunsAmerica Digest reviewers actually patterned, shot and in most cases hunted with, from a Turkish inertia gun that ran a couple hundred shells without a hiccup to a 16 gauge A5 that went over 600 rounds without a cleaning. We also dropped one popular gun that jammed on our reviewer during a goose hunt.

Our best waterfowl shotguns and best turkey shotguns guides already cover the specialists. This list is about all-around hunting guns, the kind that go from doves to ducks to pheasants with a choke change. Prices are labeled as the price at the time of our review or the current maker listing.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Semi-Auto Hunting Shotgun in 2026

Inertia or Gas

Inertia guns like the Retay, Franchi and Browning A5 use the recoil of the gun itself to cycle the action. They run clean, have fewer parts and are lighter. The downside is that they kick a little harder and can be picky with very light loads. Gas guns like the Maxus bleed gas off the barrel to run the action. They are softer shooting and handle a wider range of loads, but they get dirty and need more cleaning. If you hunt in mud and rarely clean, lean inertia. If recoil bothers you, lean gas.

Gauge and Chamber Length

A 12 gauge with a 3-inch chamber covers nearly all hunting. Go to 3.5 inches only if you shoot geese or turkeys with heavy loads and want the extra reach. A 20 or 16 gauge is lighter to carry and plenty for upland birds and doves, especially with modern bismuth or tungsten. Our best 20 gauge shotguns guide covers the lighter end in more detail.

Fit Matters More Than Features

Length of pull, drop at the comb and cast decide whether the shot goes where you look. Most guns on this list ship with shim kits or spacers so you can adjust them. Use them. Mount the gun with your eyes closed, then open them. If you are not looking straight down the rib, the gun does not fit yet.

Weight and Balance

A 6 pound gun is a joy on a long upland walk and kicks more with heavy loads. A 7 pound gun soaks up more recoil and swings smoother on passing ducks. Pick for the hunting you do most. Balance matters too. A gun that is slightly forward-weighted keeps swinging, while a whippy gun can stop on you.

Chokes, Controls and Finish

Look for at least three choke tubes, oversized controls you can work with gloves and a finish that can handle saltwater and rain. A drilled and tapped receiver is a nice extra if you plan to run a red dot for turkeys. Then pattern your gun with your actual hunting loads, because every barrel throws a little different.

Reliability Is the Whole Point

A semi-auto that jams is a single shot with extra parts. That is why we dropped one popular gun from this list after it failed to feed 3-inch shells on our reviewer during a goose hunt. Before you trust any gun, run a few boxes of the exact loads you hunt with, in the cold if you can. The best semi-auto shotgun for hunting is the one that cycles every time you need it.

The 5 Best Semi-Auto Shotguns for Hunting of 2026

Retay ACE-R: Best Overall Semi-Auto Hunting Shotgun (2026)

Retay keeps showing up and beating guns that cost a lot more. The ACE-R is the newest example. Mitchell Graf ran the 12 gauge in Realtree Max-7 through target loads and heavy turkey shells, hunted with it and tried to get it dirty enough to jam. He never had a failure to feed, fire or eject.

Read our full Retay ACE-R review here.

The reason is Retay’s Inertia Plus bolt, which uses a torsion spring to keep the bolt locked in battery. That kills the bolt bounce that can cause a click instead of a bang on some inertia guns. The ACE-R also takes Benelli Crio Plus chokes and Benelli extended magazine tubes, which opens up a lot of aftermarket options. The receiver is drilled and tapped for optics, and the trigger group pops out with a push of a button for cleaning in the field. At 30 yards with a full choke, it kept about 70 percent of its pattern inside a 12.4-inch circle with both 3.5-inch Federal #6 and #9 TSS. Mitchell did pinch his thumb in the loading port a few times. MSRP was $1,149 for the Max-7 model when we reviewed it in 2025.

Retay Gordion: Best Value Semi-Auto Hunting Shotgun (2026)

Jeff Cramblit has patterned a lot of shotguns, so he was skeptical when Retay said its deep bore drilled barrels shot better patterns. Then he counted holes. Shooting Winchester AA 1 ounce 7.5s through an improved cylinder choke at 30 yards, his Benelli Vinci averaged 71.5 percent of its pellets in a 30-inch circle. The Gordion averaged 86.5 percent.

That is 15 percent more pellets on target from the same box of shells. The Gordion uses the same Inertia Plus bolt as the ACE-R, and Jeff’s test gun ran flawlessly through patterning, hunting and function testing with nine kinds of ammo. His 28-inch walnut gun weighed 6 pounds 14.75 ounces, shot about 50/50 above and below point of aim and came in a padded case with a full shim kit. The checkering and wood to metal fit looked like a much more expensive gun. MSRP was $899 when we reviewed it in 2022. Retay still makes the Gordion for 2026, with the lineup leaning on Waterfowl, Turkey and Slug models, so check which trims are in stock.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: 12
  • Chamber: 3 in

Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen: Best Lightweight Upland and Dove Shotgun (2026)

Jace Bauserman was never a sub-gauge guy. Early steel shot bouncing off geese ruined that for him. Then Browning sent him the A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen, and after three days of dove hunting he was pulling more doubles and triples than he does with his trusty 12 gauge A5.

Read our full Browning A5 Wicked Wing Sweet Sixteen review here.

Weight explains a lot of it. His 28-inch gun weighed 6 pounds 2.08 ounces and swung like it was on rails. The Kinematic Drive inertia system kept running after more than 600 rounds without a single cleaning, and the extended Improved Cylinder choke with high-brass 16 gauge loads puffed doves past 40 yards. His wife and two kids shot it and liked it too, which tells you something about the recoil. The A5 Humpback receiver and flat rib give you a big sight plane, and the oversized bolt release works with gloves. It is a 2 3/4-inch gun only, and 16 gauge shells cost more and are harder to find than 12 or 20. Browning lists the Sweet Sixteen Wicked Wing at $2,099.99 today.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: 16
  • Chamber: 2 3/4 in
  • Action: Kinematic Drive inertia
  • Barrel: 28 in tested, 26 in available
  • Weight: 6 lb 2.08 oz (tested)
  • Length of pull: 14 1/4 in
  • Capacity: 4 in the magazine
  • MSRP: $2,099.99 (2026 maker listing)

Pros

  • Very light and quick to swing
  • Over 600 rounds without cleaning
  • Soft enough for kids to enjoy
  • Waterfowl-ready Cerakote finish

Cons

  • 2 3/4-inch shells only
  • 16 gauge ammo is pricey and harder to find
  • Expensive for a sub-gauge

Browning Maxus II Wicked Wing: Best 3.5-Inch All-Rounder (2026)

David R. Vaught bought a Wicked Wing Maxus after a bout of atrial fibrillation, because he wanted a gas gun that would not pound him. He shot it with 1 ounce target loads and heavy 3.5-inch waterfowl shells, and it ran both without a problem. The gas system shone with the heavy stuff.

Read our full Wicked Wing Maxus review here.

Here is the honest part. The gun David bought in 2021 was the original Wicked Wing Maxus, and Browning now sells the Maxus II Wicked Wing in its place. We have not had the Maxus II in hand, so treat the newer gun’s details as Browning’s numbers, not ours. What carries over is the idea. The Power Drive gas system runs cleaner than the old Gold Hunter, the Lightning trigger is fast and the Speed-Lock forearm comes off without unscrewing a magazine cap. Browning lists the Maxus II Wicked Wing in 12 gauge with a 3.5-inch chamber, 26- or 28-inch barrels and a weight of about 7 pounds, at an MSRP of $2,399.99. If you shoot geese with 3.5s and doves with light loads, this is the softest shooter on the list.

Key Specs

  • Gauge: 12
  • Chamber: 3.5 in
  • Action: Power Drive gas
  • Barrels: 26 or 28 in
  • Weight: 7 lb 0 oz to 7 lb 2 oz (maker figure)
  • Capacity: 4 in the magazine
  • Finish: Cerakote Burnt Bronze with camo stock
  • MSRP: $2,399.99 (2026 maker listing)

Pros

  • Gas system is soft with heavy loads
  • Ran light and 3.5-inch loads in our review
  • Fast Lightning trigger
  • Tool-free forearm removal

Cons

  • Our review covered the original Maxus, not the Maxus II
  • Most expensive gun here
  • Gas guns need more cleaning

Franchi Affinity 3: Best Budget Semi-Auto Hunting Shotgun (2026)

Jeff Cramblit compared the Affinity to buying a reliable 4×4 for the price of a compact car. He shot the 12 gauge Affinity 3 in Mossy Oak Bottomland with Fiocchi 1 1/4 ounce #6s and a modified choke from just over 30 yards, and the pattern densely filled the center of the board.

Read our full Franchi Affinity 3 review here.

The pattern landed about 60/40 above point of aim, and he said he was confident it would take birds out to 40 yards. On a sporting clays course, the gun mounted fast and broke targets on demand, and recoil from hunting loads was easy to manage even in a t-shirt. The Catalyst version, built with a shorter stock and higher comb for women, broke 35 to 40 yard crossers. Both guns ran target and hunting loads without a miss. The Affinity uses an Inertia-Driven action with an enlarged loading port, oversized controls and a 7-year warranty. This review dates to 2017, so it is the oldest on the list. The Affinity 3 is still in Franchi’s 2026 lineup, at MSRPs from $999 to $1,579 depending on model.

Key Specs

  • Gauges: 12 and 20
  • Chamber: 3 in
  • Action: Inertia driven
  • Barrels: 26 or 28 in
  • Weight: 6 to 7 lb by model, Catalyst 6.6 lb
  • Capacity: 4+1
  • Warranty: 7 years
  • MSRP: $999 to $1,579 (2026 maker listing)

Pros

  • Dense, well-centered patterns in our test
  • Light and simple to clean
  • Enlarged loading port
  • Compact and Catalyst fit options

Cons

  • Oldest review on this list
  • Inertia recoil is sharper than gas
  • 3-inch max chamber on the Affinity 3

The Bottom Line on Semi-Auto Hunting Shotguns

Buy the Retay ACE-R if you want one gun for ducks, turkeys and everything between. It never stuttered for our reviewer, it takes Benelli chokes and tubes, and it is ready for a red dot. If you want most of that for less money and like walnut, the Gordion threw the best patterns we have counted.

Any of these five is a strong pick for the best semi-auto shotgun for hunting, as long as it fits. Upland and dove hunters should look hard at the A5 Sweet Sixteen. It is light, soft and fun, as long as you can find 16 gauge shells. The Maxus II Wicked Wing is the gas gun for the hunter who shoots a lot of 3.5-inch loads and wants less recoil. The Franchi Affinity 3 is the budget answer that still gets the basics right.

The best semi-auto shotgun for hunting is the one that fits you and runs your loads. Pattern it before the season. Then shop new and used shotguns on GunsAmerica.com.
