The best MP5 clones put the most famous submachine gun of the last fifty years in civilian hands as a semi-auto pistol, braced pistol, or registered short-barreled rifle. Heckler & Koch’s MP5 earned its reputation with counter-terrorism units around the world, and the reason is its roller-delayed blowback action. The rollers hold the bolt closed until pressure drops, which gives the MP5 a soft, flat recoil impulse, excellent suppressed performance, and a feel no straight-blowback 9mm can match. That same system also makes the MP5 easy to control on fast strings and quiet behind a suppressor, which is why so many shooters want one.
Today you can buy a genuine German HK SP5, a U.S.-made PTR built on HK tooling, Turkish clones made at the HK-licensed MKE plant, and a growing list of budget options. You can also buy rifles that borrow the roller-delayed feel without copying the MP5 exactly, such as the Taurus RPC and JP Enterprises JP5. We include both, and we label which is which.
We ranked these guns on Digest testing first. Our writers have reviewed the HK SP5 and SP5K, the PTR 9KT, the Zenith Z-5P, the POF-5, the Taurus RPC, and the JP5, and we link every review. The MAC-5 pick is based on SHOT Show range time, and we say so. Prices are labeled as MSRP at launch or the price at the time of review. Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best MP5 Clones In 2026
MP5 clones look alike, but origin, configuration, magazine cost, and suppressor readiness vary a lot. Here is what to check.
Origin And Tooling
The HK SP5 family is made in Oberndorf, Germany. PTR builds its 9mm roller guns in South Carolina and markets the use of authentic HK tooling. Zenith and Century import guns from MKE in Turkey, a longtime HK-licensed plant, and POF guns come from Pakistan’s state arsenal. All of these can be excellent. Our POF-5 reviewer expected a paperweight and came away a believer.
Pistol, Brace, Or SBR
Most clones ship as pistols. Our SP5 reviewer noted that HK’s import rules mean the SP5 ships without a brace or stock, and he strongly recommended adding an SB Tactical brace. Brace rules have shifted in recent years, so check current federal and state law. If you want a stock, the cleanest route is a registered short-barreled rifle, which our PTR 9KT builder did with an approved Form 1.
Full-Size Or K
Full-size MP5 clones are steadier and have more room for a light and a hand stop. MP5K clones are lighter and fit in a briefcase or backpack, but have less rail space and are harder to shoot well without a brace or stock. Reverse-stretch guns, such as the POF-5PK, put a short barrel on a full-length receiver.
Magazines
Classic MP5 clones use HK-pattern curved magazines. Our JP5 reviewer pointed out that you may need $100 HK magazines for the best reliability, and many clones ship with only one or two. The JP5 uses inexpensive Glock magazines, and the Taurus RPC uses its own 32-round magazines. Budget for at least four or five spares, and buy quality magazines from known makers.
Suppressor Readiness
Most clones have a three-lug mount and a 1/2×28 thread, so they accept HK-style quick-detach cans and direct-thread pistol suppressors. The Taurus RPC adds an 85-degree locking piece for subsonic and suppressed shooting. Roller guns also run dirty when suppressed, though our Zenith reviewer fired about 800 suppressed rounds without maintenance and it kept running.
Triggers And Reloads
MP5 triggers are heavy. Our Zenith reviewer measured about 8 pounds, and our PTR 9KT builder called his factory trigger abysmal before swapping to a Timney. Classic MP5s also lack a last-round bolt hold-open, so reloads are slow. Modern designs such as the RPC and JP5 add AR-style controls.

HK SP5: Best Overall MP5 Clone (2026)
The HK SP5 is the best MP5 you can buy without a tax stamp on a machine gun, because it is not really a clone at all. It comes off the line in Oberndorf with the legendary roller-delayed action, authentic front and rear sights, a paddle magazine release, the classic charging handle, an authentic three-lug suppressor adapter, and a 1/2×28 threaded muzzle.

Our reviewer said that, other than the stock, the SP5 is as close as you will ever get to an MP5 without a select-fire switch. It ships in a high-quality range bag with two magazines and an original bungee single-point sling, but no brace, so he strongly recommended the SB Tactical HKPDW brace. He called it a fair price for what you get. The MSRP was $3,085 at the time of review. HK also offers the long-barreled SP5L.

PTR 9KT: Best American-Made MP5K Clone (2026)
The PTR 9KT is the best American-made MP5K clone. PTR builds it in South Carolina and markets the use of authentic HK tooling. Our writer chose it for three reasons: a threaded, tri-lug barrel for suppressor compatibility, a built-in section of Picatinny rail for optics without a claw mount, and U.S. manufacture.

He then built it into a registered SBR with a B&T folding stock, a Midwest Industries M-LOK handguard, a Holosun SCRS red dot, a SureFire light, and an AB Suppressor F4, and put thousands of rounds through it. His one complaint about the base gun was the abysmal factory trigger, which he replaced with a Timney. The PTR 9KT was $1,989 in his build, and the complete project hit $5,008.58. He said he would do it again.

Zenith Z-5P: Best MKE-Made MP5K Clone (2026)
The Zenith Z-5P is an MP5K-style pistol imported from MKE, the Turkish plant that built MP5s under HK license. Our reviewer fired more than 1,000 rounds and said it gives HK factory guns a run for their money. It has a 5.8-inch, three-lug barrel threaded 1/2×28, a 13.7-inch overall length, and a 4.6-pound empty weight, and it shipped with three 30-round steel magazines.
Read our full Zenith Z-5P review here.
He shot a 0.75-inch group at 10 yards and 1.5 inches at 25 yards, and a red dot tightened groups further. He fired roughly 800 rounds suppressed without maintenance and it kept running. The trigger broke around 8 pounds with a quiet reset. He found it much better as an SBR than as a pistol. The retail price was $1,800 at the time of review.

POF-5: Most Reliable Budget MP5 Clone (2026)
The POF-5 and the shorter POF-5PK come from Pakistan Ordnance Factories and were imported for the U.S. market. Our reviewer expected them to be paperweights and was proven wrong. He praised substantial, smooth welds and clean machining, pushpin lowers that accept other trigger packs, three-lug barrels, and 1/2×28 threads for nearly any 9mm can.
Read our full POF-5 review here.
In a combined 4,000 rounds, including 3,000 rounds of steel-case Wolf, suppressed and unsuppressed, with little to no cleaning, he had five failures to eject, all from steel cases. It arrived in a lockable Pelican-style case with two 30-round magazines, a sight tool, and a bungee sling.

Taurus RPC: Best Budget MP5 Alternative (2026)
The Taurus RPC is not a copy of the MP5, but it uses the same roller-delayed principle in a modern PDW-style pistol, and our review title sums it up: MP5 feel under $1,000. It has an aluminum receiver with a serialized steel chassis, a 4.5-inch barrel threaded 1/2×28, a full-length top rail, M-LOK slots, fully ambidextrous controls, a switchable non-reciprocating charging handle, and AR-style takedown pins.

It ships with two locking pieces, 110 degrees for standard ammo and 85 degrees for subsonic or suppressed use, plus two 32-round proprietary magazines. In 300 rounds, our only two malfunctions came from one batch of Norma 124-grain ammo. The trigger improved over the test, and one grip screw needed tightening. The MSRP was $939.99, or $1,098.99 with the Strike Industries folding brace, at launch.

- Action: Roller-delayed blowback

JP Enterprises JP5: Best MP5-Style Competition Carbine (2026)
The JP Enterprises JP5 pairs the soft recoil of the MP5’s roller-delayed bolt with AR-15 controls, a good trigger, fast reloads, and cheap Glock magazines. Our reviewer took a prototype straight to the Arizona PCC Championship and found that every bullet weight and style he tried fed flawlessly, including truncated-cone hollow points.
Read our full JP5 deep dive review here.
In Part 2, he weighed it at 5.98 pounds with an Aimpoint H2, compared it with a tuned SIG MPX at 7.55 pounds, and shot Grand Master level Steel Challenge scores. His complaints were minor: a 90-degree safety throw and a magwell that could be larger. He said blowback PCC shooters would gain a distinct advantage with the JP5. Our review did not list a price.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Action: Roller-delayed
- Magazines: Glock pattern
- Weight: 5.98 lb with Aimpoint H2 (as tested)
- Controls: AR-15 style

Final Thoughts On The Best MP5 Clones Of 2026
The best MP5 clone for most buyers is the HK SP5, because it is the real German gun with authentic sights, controls, and suppressor mount. If you want an American-made K gun with a built-in optics rail, the PTR 9KT is our pick, and the Zenith Z-5P and POF-5 proved their reliability in thousand-round tests. The HK SP5K is the genuine compact if you can find one, and the MAC-5 is the budget clone. If you care more about the roller-delayed feel than the look, the Taurus RPC is the value pick and the JP5 is the competition gun.
