ZCO ZC210 Review: The 2-10x Do-It-All Scope

The Zero Compromise Optic ZC210 is expensive, heavy enough to notice, and missing true 1x. After shooting it to 1,000 yards, into darkness, and behind a thermal clip-on, I also found it frustratingly hard not to like.

ZCO ZC210 Review: Why This $3,870 Optic Matters

The Zero Compromise Optic ZC210 2-10×30 with the new SAN-1 reticle is an impressive piece of engineering, manufacturing, and design.

Let me start by saying that I fully understand this is a very expensive, high-end optic that not everyone can afford. I still think it is newsworthy in the same sense that almost none of us can afford a Ferrari, and yet Ferraris still get written about. Innovation and quality tend to trickle down, and we all benefit from better optics entering the marketplace, even if it is indirectly.

There is also another side to this. Some of you actually need optics in this realm of quality and reliability. Military and law enforcement users, serious competitors, hunters who put a tremendous amount of money and effort into a hunt, and shooters building rifles where failure simply isn’t acceptable are legitimate customers for something like this.

So we’re writing about it.

I spent time shooting the ZC210 in daylight out to 1,000 yards and also used it extensively with a clip-on thermal. I shot it right down until dark and then clipped a Nocpix MATE Ultra thermal onto the front.

That experience actually changed how I look at the 2-10x magnification range.

There are plenty of 1-8x and 1-10x LPVOs on the market, and I understand why people want true 1x. But after using the ZCO, I found myself wishing that some of those 1-10s had the optical and mechanical features that ZCO put into this 2-10.

The ZC210 gives you a 30mm objective, a 36mm main tube, first-focal-plane reticle, locking exposed turrets, adjustable parallax from 8 meters to infinity, and a very wide 55.8-foot field of view at 100 yards on 2x. ZCO lists light transmission at 92 percent. The entire scope is only 10.5 inches long, although at 27.2 ounces it certainly isn’t an ultralight.

This is probably where the ZCO ZC210 separates itself most clearly from ordinary optics. The glass is so good that at long distances I routinely forget I’m only looking through a 10-power scope.

That doesn’t mean 10x magically becomes 20x. Magnification is magnification. What good glass does is let you use everything the magnification gives you. Resolution, contrast, color, and the ability to distinguish small details become increasingly important as the distance increases.

The photos through the reticle accompanying this ZCO ZC210 review are of targets at approximately a mile. Looking through the scope in person is substantially better than trying to photograph what you see through it.

I noticed the same thing while shooting at 1,000 yards. I wasn’t fighting the optic trying to see the target or what was happening around it. The image remained extremely useful.

My low-light experience was equally impressive.

I used the ZC210 until it was dark enough that I was ready to switch to thermal. The scope continued to provide a bright, useful image surprisingly late. ZCO publishes a 92-percent light transmission figure, and while I don’t have laboratory equipment to verify it, my real-world experience matches a very efficient optical system.

ZCO ZC210 Parallax: The Feature I Wish More 1-10x LPVOs Had

If manufacturers are going to put 10x on an LPVO, I’d like to see more of them include adjustable parallax like ZCO did here.

Adjustable parallax may be one of the most important features on the ZC210, and it’s one of the features most LPVOs don’t have. The ZCO adjusts from 8 meters all the way to infinity.

Most LPVOs have fixed parallax set at 100 or 200 yards. Beyond that distance, the parallax is no longer corrected. At 600, 800, or 1,000 yards, it matters.

Adjustable parallax also lets you optimize focus at the actual distance you’re shooting instead of accepting whatever compromise the manufacturer selected when it designed the scope.

This is a major reason I like the ZC210 as much as I do. I wish some of the high-end 1-10x LPVOs had this feature.

ZCO SAN-1 Reticle: Clean at 2x, Serious at Distance

There are now four reticles available in the ZC210: DMR, Predator, HTR, and the new SAN-1. I had the SAN-1, and after using it, I think this may be the reticle that makes the ZC210 most interesting.

The SAN-1 is a first-focal-plane MIL reticle designed to provide a lot of information without filling the entire field of view with stuff you don’t need.

The upper portion is intentionally kept clean. At the center is a 0.2-MIL illuminated dot. The primary stadia are spaced at 2 MIL, with 2.5-MIL chevrons that can be used for moving targets. There are elevation and wind holds below the center, plus a 0.4-MIL reference cross located 5 MIL above center. ZCO says that upper reference can be used for things such as shooting through small openings and verifying a laser rangefinder.

There are also some clever moving-target references built into the design. The tip of the 2.5-MIL chevron corresponds approximately to a 5 mph mover, the chevron intersection to 6 mph, and the 4-MIL main stadia to about 7.5 mph. ZCO designed those references around trajectories that closely correspond with 77-grain 5.56 at 2,850 fps and 140-grain 6.5mm ammunition at 2,750 fps.

ZCO ZC210 With Thermal: Where the SAN-1 Really Surprised Me

The SAN-1 is fantastic with a clip-on thermal. I could see the reticle and actually use it at 2x. I own a ZCO 4-20, and it’s an outstanding scope. But the ZC210 actually works better with my thermal for this particular application.

With the 4-20, at the lower magnification settings, I can’t see the reticle subtensions to use them the way I want. If I turn the magnification up far enough that the subtensions become easy to see, I’m also magnifying the thermal display more.

A thermal clip-on doesn’t suddenly gain sensor resolution because the day scope behind it is turned up. Eventually you’re just magnifying the thermal image and its pixels. Image quality appears worse, field of view gets tighter, and you lose some of the advantage of the clip-on.

With the ZC210 and SAN reticle, I could leave the scope down at 2x, preserve a very wide field of view, maintain excellent apparent thermal image quality, and still have a useful aiming system.

The same basic advantages should apply to a good clip-on night-vision device. ZCO also gives the ZC210 night-vision-compatible illumination settings, in addition to normal visible illumination. The illumination can be selected in red or green and uses ZCO’s AIM automatic illumination management system to conserve its CR2032 battery.

DMR, Predator, HTR, or SAN-1: The Other ZC210 Reticles

The SAN isn’t the only option.

The DMR reticle was developed with input from active-duty Austrian Special Forces advisers. It uses a fine center dot surrounded by a larger square reference for faster acquisition, along with a lower grid and leads for targets moving at 1, 2, and 3 meters per second. It’s probably the most obviously military-oriented of the original reticles.

The Predator is much more of a traditional BDC concept. It provides 100-meter increments out to 600 meters and incorporates ranging and mover references. ZCO designed it around common 5.56 and 7.62 loads from typical 16- to 20-inch barrels.

The HTR, or Hunting/Tactical Reticle, is a crossover design. It uses a large aiming circle that’s very visible at 2x, heavy horizontal stadia that pull your eye toward the center, and a relatively compact holdover tree that becomes useful as magnification increases. The central circle subtends approximately 18 inches at 200 yards, which can also provide a crude ranging reference.

The ZC210 offers both red and green illumination, along with settings low enough for use with night vision.

It also uses ZCO’s AIM, or Automatic Illumination Management. The system shuts illumination down when the rifle has been inactive or held in certain positions, then manages power automatically rather than leaving the reticle burning through batteries indefinitely. After an extended period it shuts down completely. Power comes from a common CR2032.

Push the turret down, and it’s locked. Pull it up, and it’s ready to turn. It’s simple, fast, and positive enough that you aren’t going to wonder which condition it’s in.

The clicks feel exactly like they should on a scope at this price. They’re extremely positive, tactile, and precise with none of the vague or mushy feeling found on cheaper adjustment systems.

Each click is 0.1 MIL. The scope has 46 MIL of total elevation adjustment and 35 MIL of total windage adjustment.

The elevation turret has an interesting zero-stop system. You can configure it as a conventional hard zero stop, or allow as much as 2 MIL of adjustment below your normal zero.

ZCO calls the latter concept a “Speed Drop.”

The idea is that you can have your conventional zero and still dial downward to a known second solution for fast holdover engagements. If you don’t want that capability, you can simply configure it as a normal zero stop.

The windage turret gives you 7 MIL in either direction from center and locks using the same push-down system.

The scope tracked perfectly for me when zeroing and when shooting.

ZCO ZC210 Build Quality: Why the 36mm Tube Exists

At 27.2 ounces, the ZC210 isn’t an ultralight hunting scope, but the weight buys excellent glass, serious adjustment range, locking turrets, and a very robust package.

The ZC210 is built around a 36mm main tube. A larger tube gives the designers more internal room for optical elements and the mechanical adjustment system. ZCO has previously explained that the larger diameter allowed it to use larger/stronger internal components, maintain substantial adjustment travel, and leave more material in critical portions of the scope body for strength rather than sacrificing one characteristic to improve another.

The magnification ring is smooth. The turrets lock positively. The diopter locks. Nothing about it feels light-duty.

For a DMR, precision AR, crossover hunting rifle, or a rifle that will spend time behind thermal or night-vision clip-ons, the ZC210 is an unusually capable 2-10x optic.

ZCO rates the scope as waterproof to 4 meters and for operation from roughly -25°C to 60°C.

There is a downside to the 36mm tube. You need a 36mm mount. Good mounts are available from a number of companies, so this isn’t the problem it might have been several years ago, but you probably won’t reach into a drawer full of old scope rings and find something that fits.

The scope also weighs 27.2 ounces. That’s not outrageous considering what it is, but this isn’t an ultralight mountain-rifle optic. ZCO prioritized optical performance, mechanical strength, adjustment capability, and durability over winning a weight contest.

I think that was the right decision for this scope.

Where the ZCO ZC210 Makes the Most Sense

This is where I think the ZC210 makes the most sense. Its feature set is unusual because it doesn’t force the rifle completely into either the LPVO or conventional precision-scope category.

A designated marksman rifle may be its most natural home.

Put this on a quality 5.56, 6 ARC, 6.5 Grendel, .308, or similar semiautomatic rifle and the 2-10x range makes a lot of sense.

At 2x you’ve got a very wide field of view and enough speed for close and intermediate work. At 10x you’ve got enough magnification to make precise shots much farther than most people normally associate with an LPVO-equipped rifle.

The parallax adjustment, first-focal-plane reticle, legitimate exposed turrets, and useful MIL holds mean that when the distance stretches out, you’re using a precision rifle scope rather than simply asking an LPVO to do something it wasn’t really designed to do.

ZCO ZC210 on Hunting Rifles

This could also be an outstanding hunting optic, particularly on a close- to medium-range rifle where shots might vary from very close timber to several hundred yards across open country.

Two power is low enough to give you a huge field of view. Ten power is more than enough magnification for most ethical hunting distances. The glass and low-light performance matter at exactly the times hunters tend to shoot, and the ability to dial or hold gives you flexibility when a longer opportunity develops.

The SAN reticle is particularly interesting here because the uncluttered upper field and simple center don’t make the scope feel like you’re looking through an algebra problem on a chalkboard. It’s clean.

Then, if you use the same rifle after dark for predator or hog hunting with a clip-on thermal, the ZC210 becomes even more attractive. That’s an unusually broad range of capability from one optic.

What the ZCO ZC210 Doesn’t Do Well

The ZC210 isn’t perfect for everybody.

First, it doesn’t have true 1x. If the primary purpose of your rifle is extremely fast shooting at room distances and you don’t want an auxiliary red dot, there are better choices.

Second, it’s 27.2 ounces before you add a 36mm mount.

Third, the scope is expensive. Current black SAN-1 models are listed around $3,870, with FDE versions even higher. There is no way to pretend that’s inexpensive.

But price and value aren’t the same question. The relevant question isn’t whether you can buy a functional riflescope for $800, $1,200, or $2,000. Obviously you can. The question is whether there is a measurable difference when you spend substantially more. In the case of the ZC210, there is. Whether those differences matter enough to you to justify the cost is an individual decision.

ZCO ZC210 Pros and Cons: What You Gain for the Money

ZCO ZC210 Verdict: Expensive, Specialized, and Seriously Good

The ZCO ZC210 isn’t simply a shortened precision scope and it isn’t really trying to be another conventional LPVO.

It’s somewhere in between.

I own the ZCO 4-20 and think very highly of it. I didn’t expect a 2-10 to impress me this much, and I certainly didn’t expect it to work better with my thermal.

That’s probably the biggest takeaway from this ZCO ZC210 review. The scope doesn’t win by trying to stretch an LPVO concept farther and farther. Instead, ZCO seems to have accepted that 2x is low enough for a lot of rifles and then used the room that decision created to give the shooter features normally associated with a serious precision optic.

You get real parallax adjustment. You get useful exposed locking turrets. You get 46 MIL of total elevation adjustment, a first-focal-plane MIL reticle, strong low-light performance, and a SAN-1 reticle that remains useful at the bottom of the magnification range. Then you get a 2x field of view wide enough that the scope still behaves very differently from the traditional precision scopes most of us associate with this level of mechanical capability.

The thermal experience drove that home for me. I went into this knowing the ZC210 should be a high-end 2-10x scope. I didn’t go into it expecting to prefer it behind a clip-on to my ZCO 4-20. But at 2x I could preserve the thermal’s field of view and apparent image quality while still seeing enough of the SAN-1 reticle to have a useful aiming and holding system. That combination changes what this scope can realistically do on one rifle.

For a precision AR, DMR, battle rifle, crossover hunting rifle, or a rifle that needs to work equally well in daylight and behind a clip-on, the ZC210 with the SAN reticle may be one of the most complete optics I’ve used.

None of that makes $3,870 disappear. It doesn’t make 27.2 ounces feel like 17 ounces, and it doesn’t turn 2x into true 1x. Those tradeoffs remain real. But so do the optical performance, tracking, adjustment range, parallax control, reticle design, and versatility that you’re paying for.

If you need a conventional LPVO primarily for extremely fast work at room distance, buy the optic that does that job. If you need an ultralight scope for a mountain rifle, this probably isn’t the answer either.

But if your rifle lives in the space between fast semiautomatic work and real precision shooting, particularly if thermal or night-vision clip-ons are part of the equation, the ZC210 deserves a serious look.
