Springfield Armory just made it easier for shooters to build an Echelon exactly the way they want it.

The company has released the Echelon Central Operating Group, or COG, as a standalone component. The COG serves as the serialized stainless-steel chassis and operating core of Springfield’s modular Echelon pistol.

That means buyers can select their own grip module, slide, barrel, sights, magazines and accessories. Compatible Springfield components and aftermarket parts can then be assembled around the COG.

Mix and Match the Echelon

Springfield currently offers Compact, Full-Size and Full-Size with Compact Dust Cover grip modules. The last option accommodates the shorter 4-inch slide while retaining a full-size grip.

Shooters can pair those modules with 4-inch or 4.5-inch slide assemblies. Springfield offers both conventional and integrally compensated configurations.

Aftermarket manufacturers have also continued expanding the Echelon ecosystem. That gives builders additional choices for grip materials, ergonomics, colors and other features.

The result is something closer to a ground-up custom build. Shooters no longer need to buy a complete Echelon before replacing several major components.

The Serialized Core

The COG contains the Echelon’s fire-control components inside a removable stainless-steel chassis. Critical trigger components are machined from tool steel, polished and coated to reduce friction.

Springfield also incorporates a secondary sear designed to help prevent an unintentional discharge if the pistol is dropped.

The standalone unit weighs approximately 3 ounces. It measures 4.3 inches long and 1.9 inches high. It is chambered for the 9mm Echelon platform.

Because the COG is the serialized component, it must be transferred through a Federal Firearms Licensee. It is not an unregulated parts kit or an unserialized fire-control unit.

Springfield Vice President of Marketing Steve Kramer said the COG established the Echelon’s modular design from the beginning. Selling it separately now allows shooters to configure pistols for their specific needs.

The Springfield Armory Echelon Central Operating Group carries an MSRP of $295. The model number is EC9900-RET, and the UPC is 706397012373.
