The SIG P226-X Agency takes the familiar P226 and turns up the performance with an integrated compensator, bull barrel, AX3 trigger and enclosed ROMEO-X optic. After shooting it at SIG NEXT 2026, this was the pistol that surprised me most.
The new SIG Sauer P226-X Agency is a collaboration between SIG Sauer and Agency Arms that takes the P226 platform in a much more performance-oriented direction. It combines a 3.8-inch bull barrel, single-port integrated compensator, AX3 adjustable single-action trigger, Agency Arms slide and frame work, and a factory-installed ROMEO-X SIG-LOC PRO optic. After shooting the SIG P226-X Agency at SIG NEXT 2026, this was the pistol that surprised me most.

3.8-Inch Bull Barrel and Integrated Comp Keep It Flat
The P226-X Agency uses a 3.8-inch carbon-steel bull barrel with a target crown. Despite the relatively short barrel, this is not a lightweight pistol. SIG lists it at 38.1 ounces with a magazine. That extra mass is part of what makes the gun shoot as softly as it does.
The slide incorporates a single-port integrated compensator rather than using a threaded barrel and separate muzzle device. Gas vents upward through the port near the front of the slide to counter muzzle rise.
SIG specifically pairs the 3.8-inch bull barrel with the compensated slide to reduce muzzle movement during rapid strings. In actual shooting, the combination worked extremely well. This was the softest-shooting pistol I fired at SIG NEXT, despite having shot several other compensated pistols at the event.
That weight, integrated compensator and low muzzle movement made the P226-X Agency easy to keep on target while shooting quickly.
Agency Arms 5AXIS Work Gives the P226-X Some Teeth
Agency Arms is responsible for much of what gives the SIG P226-X Agency its distinctive appearance.
The stainless-steel slide uses Agency Arms 5AXIS serrations with aggressive machining across the sides and top. The enhanced alloy frame gets matching Scale front-strap texturing.
SIG also uses custom alloy LOK grip panels with a matching scale pattern. The result is considerably more aggressive than a traditional P226 grip while still feeling natural in the hand.
The finishes also separate the Agency model visually from a standard P226. SIG uses Bronze Cerakote on the slide and grips with Burnt Bronze Cerakote on the alloy frame, along with contrasting black components.
An M1913 accessory rail remains on the dust cover for mounting a weapon light or other accessory.
AX3 Trigger Goes Extremely Light and Fast
The P226-X Agency is single-action only and uses SIG’s AX3 fully adjustable trigger.
During my range time, the trigger had a very light, rolling break rather than an abrupt wall. There was a small amount of movement before the shot, but the overall pull was extremely light and easy to run quickly.
The pistol also has an ambidextrous manual safety. The safety placement felt natural and allowed me to maintain a high grip without changing my hand position to operate it.
An extended takedown lever also doubles as a thumb rest. Shooters who use a gas-pedal-style support-hand position have a substantial indexing point directly from the factory.

The SIG-LOC PRO mounting system secures the optic directly to the slide without conventional exposed mounting screws on top. SIG designed the system to provide a rigid direct-mount interface while maintaining a low optic position.
The factory configuration uses the ROMEO-X SIG-LOC PRO with a circle-dot reticle.
20-Round Magazines Push the Classic P226 Toward Competition
The standard P226-X Agency ships with three 20-round steel magazines. A large magazine well surrounds the bottom of the grip to help guide reloads.
The slide release remains easy to reach with the firing-hand thumb without significantly changing grip position, and the undercut trigger guard allows a high firing grip.
The pistol also retains the basic P226 layout while moving much closer to a competition-oriented configuration.
Shooting the P226-X Agency Changed My Mind Fast
I have never been particularly attached to the P226 platform. That is exactly why the P226-X Agency caught me off guard.
The P226-X Agency was my favorite handgun to shoot at SIG NEXT. The combination of its 38.1-ounce weight, integrated compensator, bull barrel and extremely light AX3 trigger made it easy to shoot rapidly while keeping rounds on target.
That range session was at a SIG-hosted event using SIG-provided firearms and ammunition, so this was not independent testing. We will need more time with a production gun on our own range before treating this as a full review.
As a first look, though, the P226-X Agency feels significantly different from a standard P226 and stands out as one of the more interesting performance pistols SIG introduced at SIG NEXT 2026.

SIG P226-X Agency Pros and Cons After the First Shoot
- Pros: Extremely soft shooting in the initial range session, low muzzle movement, light AX3 trigger, integrated compensator, enclosed factory optic, aggressive Agency Arms texturing and three 20-round magazines.
- Cons: At 38.1 ounces with a magazine, it is not lightweight, and this SIG-hosted range session was not independent testing or a full production-gun review.
First Look Verdict: This Is Not the P226 I Expected
I went into SIG NEXT without any particular attachment to the P226 platform and came away with the P226-X Agency as my favorite handgun to shoot at the event. The 3.8-inch bull barrel, 38.1-ounce weight, integrated compensator and light AX3 trigger came together in a package that felt unusually soft and easy to keep on target.
This still is not a full review. A production pistol, independent ammunition selection and more time on our own range will tell us much more. But as a first look, the SIG P226-X Agency took a familiar platform in a direction I did not expect, and that is exactly what made it memorable.
