An early-morning apartment break-in in Northeast Philadelphia ended with a masked man dead and an unexpected discovery for the woman who shot him.

According to 6ABC Action News, officers responded to an apartment building on the 4600 block of Castor Avenue shortly after 5 a.m. on September 30. Inside a second-floor bedroom, they found a 29-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the woman living in the apartment heard someone breaking windows before encountering a masked man inside her home.

Investigators believe the man climbed a rear fire escape, broke a second-floor window and reached through the opening to unlock a door. The woman reportedly fired one or two shots during the confrontation.

A Surprising Identification

The case took an unusual turn when medics removed the man’s ski mask while attempting to treat him.

Police said the woman immediately recognized him and told investigators they had a previous relationship. A police source later told 6ABC that the man was her former boyfriend. Authorities have not released either person’s identity.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said investigators did not find a weapon on the man. However, police said he was wearing a mask and had allegedly forced his way into the apartment before sunrise.

The woman turned over a semiautomatic handgun to investigators and cooperated with homicide detectives. Police were also reviewing surveillance footage from cameras around the apartment building and a nearby school.

Investigation Remains Open

No arrest or criminal charge had been announced in the initial reports.

Police are still examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the nature of the former couple’s relationship and why the man allegedly entered the apartment while wearing a mask.

The Philadelphia Inquirer separately reported that investigators believed the shooting occurred after the man broke into the woman’s apartment. The woman was described only as being in her early 20s.

The relationship between the resident and the alleged intruder adds another layer to the investigation. Still, the basic sequence reported by police remains the same: a masked man allegedly broke into a young woman’s apartment before dawn, and the armed resident opened fire after encountering him inside.

The case remains under investigation by Philadelphia homicide detectives.

Sounds like a good shoot, based on the available facts. What say you?
