Fingerprint scanners on gun safes have always sounded great in theory. In practice, shooters have learned to keep the keypad code or backup key nearby.
Hornady thinks it has a better answer.
The company has introduced VEXIS, a patent-pending biometric security system that recognizes the vein pattern beneath a user’s palm. Instead of touching a fingerprint reader or entering a code, the owner simply holds a hand near the scanner.
Hornady claims the system can verify an authorized user and unlock the safe in less than half a second.
If VEXIS works that quickly and reliably in the real world, it could be a serious step forward for secure firearm storage.

Your Palm Is the Key
VEXIS uses near-infrared technology to scan the veins beneath the skin. Hornady says those patterns are unique to each person and remain stable throughout adulthood.
Because the system reads an internal pattern, the company says it cannot be copied, photographed, forged or accidentally left behind on a surface like a fingerprint.
Each scan reportedly captures more than 2.5 million data points. Hornady says that produces extremely low false acceptance and rejection rates.
That is the pitch, anyway. The real test will come when owners start using VEXIS every day, especially when fast access matters most.
Privacy should also get some attention. Hornady says each user’s biometric information remains stored locally on the device. The data is not uploaded or shared.

A VEXIS device can store up to 10 users. It also includes a keypad and mechanical key backup, so nobody is completely dependent on the palm scanner.
“Security should be both uncompromising and effortless,” Hornady Vice President Jason Hornady said. “VEXIS combines advanced biometric technology with the dependability our customers expect, creating one of the most secure and user-friendly access systems available today.”
VEXIS Night Guard
The Night Guard is Hornady’s bedside option.
A palm scan opens a padded drawer designed to hold a handgun or other valuables. The drawer uses a quiet, spring-assisted opening system that should help keep late-night access from sounding like someone dropped a toolbox.
The Night Guard uses 14-gauge steel and hardened locking lugs. It also includes a dimmable clock display, a USB-C charging port, keypad access and a mechanical backup key.
It is a smart combination on paper. It looks like a bedside clock but provides fast access to a secured firearm.
VEXIS Mobilis Safes
Hornady is also adding VEXIS to its larger Mobilis safes.
The lineup includes Single Door, Double Door and Double Door MAX configurations. Their modular construction allows the pieces to pass through standard doorways before being assembled in place.
That could save owners from wrestling a full-size gun safe through a narrow hallway or around an unforgiving staircase.
The Mobilis safes use heavy-duty 9-gauge steel and pry-resistant doors. Hornady also lists one-hour Fire Shield protection rated to 2,300 degrees.
Inside, the company’s Square-Lok system allows owners to customize storage. Built-in power outlets, keypad access and mechanical key backup come standard.
VEXIS Vault Doors
For those operating on a slightly larger scale, Hornady is offering VEXIS Premium Vault Doors.
The doors come in 32-by-80-inch and 36-by-80-inch sizes. They are designed to fit standard residential rough openings and turn a safe room into a secured vault.
Each door uses 12-gauge steel and sixteen 1-inch live locking bolts. A reversible hinge system allows for left- or right-hand in-swing installation.
Like the Mobilis safes, the vault doors carry a one-hour, 2,300-degree Fire Shield rating. They also include keypad and mechanical key backup.
Existing Safes Can Get VEXIS Too
Owners may not need to replace an entire safe to get the new technology.
Hornady’s VEXIS Safe Upgrade Kit includes the palm-reading keypad and a swingbolt locking mechanism. It works with first-generation Mobilis safes and other compatible models.
Hornady has posted an online compatibility list so owners can check their equipment before ordering.
The company has not included pricing in its announcement. Hornady says the VEXIS products will be sold through stocking dealers, major sporting-goods retailers and their websites.

Palm vein recognition sounds like something pulled from a spy movie. Hornady is now putting it on bedside handgun safes, full-size gun safes and vault doors.
The technology still needs to prove itself outside a controlled demonstration. A security system can sound amazing on a specification sheet, but owners will ultimately judge it by one question: Does it open immediately, every time?
