Best Vortex Scopes (2026): Venom, Viper, Razor & More

in GA Guides, Optics Buying Guide, Scopes

The best Vortex scopes cover just about every job a rifle or pistol can do, from a budget deer scope to an LPVO that costs more than most of the rifles it rides on. That range is the reason Vortex is the brand so many shooters start with, and the reason it is so easy to buy the wrong one. The catalog is huge, the names blur together, and Viper, Venom, Strike Eagle, Razor and AMG all mean something different.

We have tested a lot of Vortex glass at GunsAmerica Digest. Our reviewers tracked a Viper HD 5-25 with a laser and rang steel at 1,045 yards with it, ran an AMG 1-10×24 they called the finest LPVO they had ever tested, and shot a Razor 4-24×44 that tracked flawlessly. They also told you when a scope fell short, like the Triumph HD going cloudy at 9x and the Strike Eagle 1-10 softening past 7x.

This 2026 guide sticks to riflescopes and red dots. Binoculars, rangefinders and thermals are a different shopping trip. If you want to compare Vortex against other brands, see our best LPVO scopes and best rifle scopes for the money.

Below is a buyer’s guide that explains how the Vortex lines stack up, followed by ten picks, each backed by a hands-on Digest review. Prices are what our reviewers reported at the time of testing, so check current listings before you buy.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Vortex Scopes In 2026

Vortex sells a scope at nearly every price point, and its product lines are tiered. Knowing the tiers saves money and frustration.

Know The Vortex Product Tiers

Roughly from entry level up: Crossfire and Triumph are the budget lines, Strike Eagle and Venom are the value tier, Viper and Viper HD are the mid-tier hunting and tactical scopes, Razor is the premium line, and AMG is the made-in-USA top tier. Red dots follow a similar pattern, with Crossfire and Venom at the low end and Defender above them. The higher you go, the better the glass, the tighter the tracking and the higher the price.

First Focal Plane Or Second Focal Plane

In a second focal plane (SFP) scope, the reticle stays the same size as you zoom, and holdovers are only correct at one magnification. Our Venom 1-6 reviewer noted that its BDC holds are true only at 6x, and the Viper HD 5-25 holds are calibrated at 20x, where Vortex built in a detent. First focal plane (FFP) reticles grow and shrink with the image, so holds work at any power. FFP suits precision and LPVO work; SFP is simpler and common on hunting scopes.

Magnification And Use

For deer and hog hunting inside 300 yards, a 3-9x or 2-10x is plenty. For carbines, an LPVO in the 1-6x to 1-10x range lets you shoot fast at 1x and still reach out. For long range, 5-25x and 4-24x precision scopes with exposed turrets and parallax adjustment are the tools. Red dots are for speed at close range on pistols, shotguns, PCCs and ARs. If you are new to the category, our best AR-15 red dots guide explains dot sizes and footprints.

Reticles: BDC Versus Mil Or MOA Trees

Vortex BDC reticles like the Dead-Hold BDC and AR-BDC3 give you quick holdover marks for common loads, but every reviewer who tested one said to confirm the holds with your ammunition. Tree reticles like the EBR-7D and EBR-9 give precise holds for wind and elevation. Match the reticle to how far you shoot and whether you dial or hold.

Turrets, Tracking And Parallax

Capped turrets protect your zero on hunting and duty scopes. Exposed or locking turrets are for dialing. Tracking matters if you dial: our reviewers laser-tested the Viper HD 5-25, Triumph HD and Razor 4-24. Fixed parallax is fine for hunting distances; adjustable parallax matters for long-range accuracy.

The Warranty

Every Vortex scope and red dot in this guide is covered by the Vortex VIP unconditional lifetime warranty, which our reviewers mention repeatedly. It does not make a bad choice good, but it takes some sting out of buying a budget optic.

Best Vortex Scopes Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Vortex Venom 1-6×24 SFP: Best Overall Vortex Scope For Most AR Owners (2026)

The Vortex Venom 1-6×24 SFP is the best overall Vortex scope for most AR owners because it delivers a true 1x LPVO with an illuminated AR-BDC3 reticle, capped turrets and an included throw lever at a price most shooters can justify. Our reviewer called it a high-value offering in its price range, and it was listed at an MSRP of $450, available for around $300, at the time of review in 2024.

He paired it with a Vortex cantilever mount and spent a lot of time shooting it on a 45-70, and the combo never lost zero. The AR-BDC3 holds are designed for 20 to 650 yards with common .223/5.56 and .308 loads, and they are true only at 6x because this is a second focal plane scope. He saw no distortion in the center of the glass and slight blurring only in the outer 15 percent. His one complaint was that the turret adjustments did not line up with the reticle for a one-shot zero.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 1-6x
  • Objective: 24 mm
  • Focal plane: second
  • Tube: 30 mm
  • Reticle: AR-BDC3, illuminated
  • Eye relief: 3.7 in
  • Length: 10.3 in
  • Weight: 19.5 oz
  • Price: $450 MSRP, about $300 street at the time of review (2024)

Pros

  • True 1x with a fast illuminated horseshoe
  • Never lost zero on a 45-70

  • Strong value

  • Slight edge blur

Vortex Viper HD 2-10×42: Best Vortex Hunting Scope (2026)

The Vortex Viper HD 2-10×42 is the best Vortex hunting scope because it is light, bright and simple, with capped turrets and a clean Dead-Hold BDC reticle. At 19.9 ounces with a 30 mm tube it sits on the lighter end of its class, and our reviewer said the more he used it, the more he liked it.

He first ran it on a 14.5 inch AR as a mid-power SPR scope for shots inside 500 yards, then came to see its value as a hunting optic. The lack of parallax adjustment, he wrote, becomes a non-issue when hunting medium to large game inside 500 yards. MSRP was $900 with street prices around $600 at the time of review in 2024, which he called fair.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 2-10x
  • Objective: 42 mm
  • Tube: 30 mm
  • Reticle: Dead-Hold BDC
  • Length: 12.1 in
  • Weight: 19.9 oz
  • Field of view: 61.6 to 11.9 ft at 100 yd
  • Price: $900 MSRP, about $600 street at the time of review (2024)

  • Capped turrets for hunting
  • Good light transmission

Vortex Viper HD 5-25×50: Best Vortex Long Range Scope For The Money (2026)

The Vortex Viper HD 5-25×50 is the best Vortex long range scope for the money because it tracked perfectly in our testing and let our reviewer hit steel at 1,045 yards. It has an illuminated reticle, capped windage and a locking elevation turret, and street prices were around $900 for the VMR-3 reticle and $1,000 for the VMR-4 at the time of review in 2024.

He laser-tested the turrets by dialing 8.5 mils up and 5 mils right, and the laser landed exactly on the reticle lines and returned to center. Mounted on an Aero Precision SOLUS in .308, it also hit a 9 inch rabbit target at 900 yards, and he never had an issue. In the SFP version, the holds are calibrated at 20x, and Vortex added a detent that stops the magnification ring right there. His only real complaint was the VMR-3 reticle itself; he would pick the FFP VMR-4 version.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 5-25x
  • Objective: 50 mm
  • Focal plane: second (VMR-3); first focal plane VMR-4 option
  • Tube: 30 mm
  • Eye relief: 3.4 in
  • Length: 15.2 in
  • Weight: 25.0 oz
  • Price: about $900 (VMR-3) to $1,000 (VMR-4) street at the time of review (2024)

  • Steel hits at 1,045 yards
  • 20x detent for SFP holds
  • Locking elevation turret

Cons

  • Reviewer disliked the VMR-3 reticle
  • Heavier than hunting scopes

Vortex Triumph HD 3-9×40: Best Budget Vortex Scope (2026)

The Vortex Triumph HD 3-9×40 is the best budget Vortex scope because it ships with rings, mounts in minutes and costs less than many ring sets. MSRP was $150 with street prices around $99 at the time of review in 2026. Our reviewer called it a genuinely useful budget hunting optic for shots inside 300 yards.

Read our full Vortex Triumph HD 3-9×40 review here.

He mounted it on a Savage Axis II Pro in 6.5 Creedmoor. In a laser tracking check, dialing 7.5 MOA lined up perfectly with the third Dead-Hold BDC hash, though a couple of other hashes looked off by about 0.25 to 0.50 MOA. He was honest about the limits: the image gets noticeably cloudy toward 9x, low light performance is only decent, and parallax is fixed at 100 yards. For a first-time hunter on a tight budget, he said those shortcomings are easy to overlook.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 3-9x
  • Objective: 40 mm
  • Focal plane: second
  • Tube: 1 in
  • Reticle: Dead-Hold BDC (MOA)
  • Eye relief: 3.9 in
  • Length: 11.8 in
  • Weight: 16.5 oz
  • Price: $150 MSRP, about $99 street at the time of review (2026)

Pros

  • Rings included, with torque specs engraved
  • Very low price
  • Light and simple
  • Tracked with the BDC at 7.5 MOA

Cons

  • Cloudy image near 9x
  • Fixed parallax
  • Only decent in low light

The Vortex Razor HD Gen III 4-24×44 FFP is the best premium Vortex precision scope because it puts Razor glass and tracking in a package compact enough for DMRs, gas guns and lighter bolt guns. Our reviewer called the glass stunning, the tracking spot-on and the L-Tec+ turrets among the best designs in the industry.

It is the third Razor Gen III model, after the 6-36×56 and 1-10x, and it fills the gap between them. He said it stands shoulder to shoulder with the best in its class and works well with clip-on thermal setups. MSRP was $4,199 with a street price around $2,799 at the time of review in 2026. His complaints were the price, the weight, a parallax knob that could use more distance markings and a fine reticle that can be hard to pick up without illumination.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 4-24x
  • Objective: 44 mm
  • Focal plane: first
  • Reticle: EBR-7D MRAD
  • Elevation: 46 MRAD

Vortex AMG 1-10×24 FFP: Best Premium Vortex LPVO (2026)

The Vortex AMG 1-10×24 FFP is the best premium Vortex LPVO because it packs top-tier glass, dual mechanical zeros, a locking diopter and an integrated throw lever into a body just 8.4 inches long and 18.8 ounces. That is smaller and lighter than the Razor 1-10, and the short tube frees rail space for a thermal, pressure pad and laser.

Our reviewer said it is the finest LPVO he has ever tested and may be the best money can buy. The catch is a street price of $3,999 at the time of review in 2026. He also noted a firm magnification ring, turret clicks that are not especially tactile, and that his early sample had a factory issue before Vortex corrected it.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 1-10x
  • Objective: 24 mm
  • Focal plane: first
  • Tube: 34 mm
  • Reticle: EBR-9 MRAD

Vortex Strike Eagle 1-10×24 FFP: Best Budget Vortex 1-10x LPVO (2026)

The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-10×24 FFP is the best budget Vortex 1-10x LPVO because it brings first focal plane holds, motion-activated illumination and a practical EBR-8 BDC reticle to a street price around $700 at the time of review in 2026. It is 10 inches long and weighs 21.6 ounces.

Read our full Vortex Strike Eagle 1-10×24 review here.

Our reviewer tested it on a 16 inch Aero Precision rifle with 55 grain 5.56 and said it has more fight in it than the price tag suggests. He was clear that it is not flawless glass. The image softens past about 7x, 10x requires a diopter compromise, the outer 10 percent of the image warps slightly, and the illumination is not truly daylight bright. For shooters who want reach without premium pricing, it is a practical, well-rounded option.

Key Specs

  • Magnification: 1-10x
  • Objective: 24 mm
  • Focal plane: first
  • Reticle: EBR-8 BDC
  • Parallax: 150 yd

  • Capped tactile turrets
  • Forgiving eye box

Cons

  • Softens past about 7x
  • Illumination not daylight bright
  • Slight edge warping

Our reviewer ran it on a MEAN Arms 9mm bearing delay upper and said the 2 MOA dot was small enough for precise shots at moderate distances and still fast to pick up.
