Best SIG Sauer Rifles (2026): M400, MCX, Cross & More

in AR-15, GA Guides, Rifles

The best SIG Sauer rifles cover more ground than most people realize. SIG builds value AR-15s, piston-driven MCX rifles, the MPX pistol-caliber carbine, AR-10 pattern .308s, and the Cross bolt action that folds in half for the trail. That range makes it hard to know where to start.

Our writers have put a lot of them through real testing. We ran a couple of hundred rounds through an M400 Forge with zero malfunctions, shot multiple half-inch groups with an MCX Virtus, fired well over 2,000 rounds through an MPX with no gun-caused failures, printed a 0.34 MOA group with a Cross Magnum in .300 Win. Mag., and took an MCX Regulator to a two-gun match where it placed fourth overall.

This guide picks the best SIG rifle for each job. Most picks come from full hands-on reviews. Two come from video coverage, and we label them that way. If you want handguns instead, see our best SIG Sauer pistols guide.

Use the buyer’s guide to narrow it down, or jump straight to the picks.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best SIG Sauer Rifles In 2026

SIG rifles fall into a few families. Start with the job.

AR-15, Piston, Or Bolt Action

The M400 line is SIG’s direct impingement AR-15. The MCX family and the 516 use gas pistons, which keep the action cleaner and often feel softer. The 716i is an AR-10 pattern .308. The Cross is a bolt action with a folding stock. The MPX is a 9mm carbine. Pick the family first, then the model.

Piston Versus Direct Impingement

Piston rifles like the MCX Virtus and 516 G3 Mohawk vent gas at the front of the rifle instead of into the action. Our Virtus reviewer said it recoiled like an AR with a competition brake. Direct impingement rifles like the M400 Forge and 716i Tread cost less and take standard AR parts.

MCX Generations And The SPEAR

The MCX has evolved from the original to the Virtus and then the MCX-SPEAR-LT, which SIG says combines the best of both earlier generations. We have news coverage only of the MCX-SPEAR-LT launch, not a hands-on review, so it is not a pick here. The compact MCX Rattler is sold as a pistol, so it is not a pick either.

Triggers

SIG triggers vary a lot by model. The M400 Forge ships with a TriggerTech 3.5 pound two-stage flat trigger. Our Cross Magnum trigger had a 1.5 pound first stage and broke at 2.5 pounds. The MCX Virtus Matchlite Duo broke around 4 pounds. The 716i Tread was the outlier at almost 8 pounds, and our reviewer blamed it for fliers.

Restrictive States

The MCX Regulator is built for states with strict rifle laws. Our coverage calls it 48-state legal, except Washington and Illinois. Check your own state and local laws before buying any semi-auto rifle.

Price

In our reviews, MSRPs ran from $999 for the black M400 Forge in 2026 to $2,499.99 for the Cross Magnum in 2024. Several reviews are older. The Tread Predator listed at $1,099 in 2021 and the MCX Virtus at $2,233 in 2017, so check current listings.
