Best Ruger Revolvers (2026): GP100, SP101, LCR & More

in GA Guides, Handguns, Revolvers

The best Ruger revolvers are known for being nearly indestructible. Ruger builds double action carry guns like the LCR, SP101 and GP100, and single actions like the Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, Vaquero and Wrangler, so there is a Ruger wheel gun for almost every job.

Our reviewers at GunsAmerica Digest have shot these revolvers on the range, at Cowboy Action matches and on drills. One ran Bill Drills with a GP100 Talo and full power .357 Magnum. Another put 200 rounds of .44 Magnum through a short barrel Super Blackhawk Bisley and said he could have kept going.

This guide picks the right Ruger revolver for each job, from concealed carry to bear country, Cowboy Action and rimfire plinking. For other brands, see our best defensive revolvers and best big bore handguns.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Ruger Revolvers In 2026

Ruger revolvers split into double action guns for carry and defense and single action guns for hunting, trail use and Cowboy Action.

Double Action Or Single Action

A double action revolver like the LCR, SP101 or GP100 fires with a long trigger pull every time, which is what you want for carry. A single action like the Blackhawk, Vaquero or Wrangler must be cocked for each shot and loads through a gate one round at a time. Single actions are great for hunting, trail carry and Cowboy Action, but they are slow to reload.

Frame Size And Weight

The LCR is the lightest Ruger carry revolver at 13.2 ounces in .38 Special. The SP101 weighs 26 ounces and the GP100 Talo weighs 36 ounces. Our GP100 reviewer said that weight made full power .357 Magnum comfortable but makes the gun harder to carry. Heavier guns shoot softer, lighter guns carry easier.

Pick Your Caliber

A .357 Magnum revolver also shoots .38 Special, which is great for practice. The LCR also comes in 9mm with moon clips. The .327 Federal Magnum gives you an extra round in the same size cylinder; our reviewer’s Single-Seven held seven. For a lighter .32, see our Ruger LCR .32 H&R Magnum review and our best .32 Magnum revolvers. For bear country, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt are classic choices.

Ruger Strength

Ruger single actions are among the strongest handguns made. Our Super Blackhawk Bisley reviewer noted that some heavy ammunition makers and loading manuals limit their hottest loads to Ruger Blackhawks. The SP101 and GP100 use a solid frame with no sideplate, which our SP101 reviewer said lets them handle magnum pressures and high round counts.

Big Ruger Double Actions

We have also covered the Super Redhawk and Redhawk, but not in full hands on reviews. Our Super Redhawk Alaskan Toklat .454 Casull article is a short video feature, and our Redhawk in .45 Auto and .45 Colt article is a 2015 launch announcement. That is why neither is a pick here.

Lipsey’s Exclusives

Several revolvers here are Lipsey’s distributor exclusives, including the Super Blackhawk Bisley we reviewed, the Single-Seven and the Taffin Perfect Packin’ Pistol. Our Bisley reviewer said exclusives carry a small premium over standard guns but cost much less than a custom job. Availability can come and go, so check with your dealer.

It weighs 36 ounces unloaded, and he found that weight an asset with hot magnum loads, though he wished Ruger had shaved a few ounces. The double action pull measured 12 pounds but felt lighter with little stacking, and single action broke at 4.1 pounds. Ruger SP101 Talo Deluxe: Best Small Frame Ruger Revolver (2026)

The Ruger SP101 Talo Deluxe is the best small frame Ruger revolver because it packs five rounds of .357 Magnum into a nearly indestructible 26 ounce stainless snub. Our reviewer called the little gun a great shooter and ideal for belt carry, though a little heavy for a pocket.

The trigger on his sample was clean with no grit or stacking, and single action broke at 5 pounds. He ran a timed drill from 3 and 5 yards, and clocked Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel at 891 fps from the 2.25 inch barrel. His only criticism was the all black front sight, which was hard to see on a B-8 target; it is pinned, so it is easy to swap. MSRP was $1,253 for the Talo Deluxe at the time of review in 2023, about $300 more than a standard SP101.

Ruger LCR .38 Special: Best Lightweight Ruger Revolver (2026)

The Ruger LCR in .38 Special is the best lightweight Ruger revolver because it weighs just 13.2 ounces with Hogue Tamer stocks and has a trigger our reviewer, a die hard Smith and Wesson fan, called as good as any little gun he has shot. He compared it directly to his S&W 442.

Read our full Ruger LCR review here.

Speer 135 grain +P Gold Dot averaged 873 fps with an extreme spread of 22 fps, and with practice he shot several 2 inch groups from about 10 yards. He liked the cushioned Hogue stocks for recoil but found the white front sight insert a distraction at first. MSRP was $579 at the time of review in 2021, about $80 more than the 442, which he called a small price to pay for the trigger and stocks.

  • Weight: 13.2 oz
  • Action: double action only

Ruger LCR 9mm: Best Ruger Revolver In 9mm (2026)

The Ruger LCR 9mm is the best Ruger revolver in 9mm because it uses moon clips that make reloading nearly as fast as an automatic. Our reviewer called it one of the most modern revolvers on the market and said the trigger pull is to die for.

Read our full Ruger LCR 9mm review here.

At 15 yards he could ring a 25 percent IPSC target with all five rounds fairly quickly. Recoil with 124 grain +P is jumpy, so he preferred 115 grain JHP for control. It will work without moon clips, but ejection may then take a shake or a stick. He also said the stock grips could be better. MSRP was $809 at the time of review in 2022.

Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley 3.75 Inch .44 Magnum: Best Ruger Revolver For Bear Country (2026)

The Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley with a 3.75 inch barrel is the best Ruger revolver for bear country because it puts .44 Magnum in a compact, fast handling single action. Our reviewer tested the Lipsey’s exclusive Model 0818 and said he feels uneasy in the field without at least a .44 Magnum.

Read our full Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley review here.

At 44 ounces empty, he said full power .44 Magnum was stout but not punishing, and after 200 rounds he could have kept going. The trigger broke at an average of 4 pounds 2.4 ounces with a crisp break. Typical groups were 1.5 to 2.5 inches at 10 yards standing with .44 Special or .44 Magnum and factory sight settings. The Lipsey’s Ruger Blackhawk Taffin Perfect Packin’ Pistol is the best Ruger revolver in .45 Colt because it adds a .45 ACP cylinder, a clean trigger and Tyler Gun Works walnut stocks to a Blackhawk Flattop Bisley. It honors the late gun writer John Taffin, and every serial number has a JT prefix.

Our reviewer’s 5.5 inch stainless gun had no sharp edges or machining marks, and the single action trigger broke cleanly at 2 pounds 12 ounces. He said the 40 plus ounce gun and Bisley frame absorbed recoil in fine fashion, and swapping cylinders was easy. From a bench at 25 yards, a 270 grain Keith load ran 936 fps into 4.5 inches and .45 ACP ran 932 fps into 4.25 inches. MSRP was $1,149 at the time of review in 2025.

Ruger Single-Seven .327 Federal Magnum: Best Ruger Revolver For Recoil Sensitive Shooters (2026)

The Ruger Single-Seven is the best Ruger revolver for recoil sensitive shooters because the .327 Federal Magnum hits hard with recoil our reviewer compared to a little more than a .22 Magnum and far less than a .38 Special or 9mm. It holds seven rounds and was a Lipsey’s dealer exclusive.

Read our full Ruger .327 Single-Seven review here.

He had zero failures and got consistent 1 inch groups from 50 feet off a bench. Buffalo Bore 130 grain hard cast loads ran about 1,500 fps, faster than the box claimed. It also fires .32 S&W Long for very soft practice. The big white dot front sight sat a bit high, and the gun shot about 2 inches high at 50 feet. The catch is ammo; he found no .327 at big box stores. Our review did not list a price.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: .327 Federal Magnum (also .32 H&R, .32 S&W Long)
  • Capacity: 7
  • Barrel: 4 5/8 in

He ran over 300 rounds of both calibers with zero problems loading or ejecting. Offhand at 5 yards, his best .22 LR group was 0.55 inches with Winchester Wildcat. His .22 WMR groups opened to 1.5 to 2 inches at 10 yards offhand, but shrank to 0.70 to 1.2 inches from a rest. It weighs 37.7 ounces with a steel frame and 5.5 inch hammer forged barrel. Ruger Vaquero SASS Set: Best Ruger Revolver For Cowboy Action (2026)

The Ruger Vaquero is the best Ruger revolver for Cowboy Action because it is one of the most common revolvers in the sport and runs reliably out of the box. Our reviewer shot a matched SASS set in .45 Colt with consecutive SASS serial numbers, special grips and a widened rear sight for fast sight pictures on steel.

Read our full Ruger SASS Vaqueros review here.

The Rugers ran great on the stages he shot, with no problems. All five shots touched at 7 yards, and groups opened to 3 to 4 inches past 15 yards, which he blamed on the wide rear sight. He said an action job is the main upgrade the set could use. The suggested retail was $1,618 for the pair at the time of review in 2014. For more, see our top Cowboy Action revolvers.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: .45 Colt (also .357 Magnum)
  • Barrel: 5.5 in (.45), 4.62 in (.357)
