Best Ruger Pistols (2026): RXM, Ruger-57, MAX-9 & More

The best Ruger pistols cover every budget and job, from a carry gun that listed at $299 at the time of our review to a 5.7x28mm that undercut its only rival on price in 2020. Ruger builds tough, affordable handguns in huge numbers, and its semi-auto line has grown fast. Today it includes a Glock-pattern 9mm built with Magpul, optic-ready micro-compacts, the classic .22 target pistol, and a pocket .380 that fits nearly anywhere.

Our writers have tested most of the current line. We shot the RXM side by side with a Gen 3 Glock 19, ran a Ruger-57 against the FN Five-seveN’s price tag, carried a MAX-9 with its ReadyDot, put more than 120 rounds through an LCP MAX, and shot 1.5 inch groups at 25 yards with a 22/45 Tactical. We also tested the EC9s, the Ruger American Pistol Competition, and the old P89. For a wider look across brands, see our best 9mm pistols guide.

This is a lineup guide. We rank the Ruger pistols we have reviewed by what each one does best. You get what our writers saw at the range and what each cost when we tested it, since Ruger prices shift with promotions and new versions.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Ruger Pistols In 2026

Ruger makes so many pistols that it helps to narrow by size and job.

Size And Job

Pocket pistols like the LCP MAX are for deep concealment. Micro-compacts like the MAX-9 and EC9s are everyday carry guns. The RXM is a compact do-it-all 9mm. The Ruger-57 and American Pistol Competition are full-size range, home, and competition guns. The 22/45 is a trainer and suppressor host. Pick the size you will actually carry or shoot.

Caliber

Most Ruger carry guns are 9mm. The LCP MAX is .380 ACP, which is easier to hide and softer than 9mm in a tiny gun. The Ruger-57 fires 5.7x28mm, a light, fast round with mild recoil and 20 rounds per magazine. The 22/45 is .22 LR for cheap practice. See our best 5.7×28 pistols guide for more on that cartridge.

Optics

The RXM is optics ready. The MAX-9 we tested came with Ruger’s ReadyDot, a battery-free reflex sight with a big 15 MOA dot that sold for under $100 at the time of review. Our reviewer liked it for fast target acquisition at carry distances. Older models like the EC9s and P89 use iron sights only.

Glock Compatibility

The RXM is built around Gen 3 Glock 19 parts and magazines, with a removable serialized chassis and a Magpul grip module. That opens up a massive aftermarket. If a Glock is what you want, compare the RXM with the guns in our best Glocks guide.

Price And Value

Ruger pricing is a big draw. In our reviews, the EC9s had a $299 MSRP at the time of review, the RXM could be found for under $400 in 2025, and the Ruger-57 listed at $799 in 2020. California buyers found the LCP MAX around $300 as of our 2026 review. Used Rugers are easy to find on GunsAmerica.
