Best HK Pistols (2026): VP9B, VP9CC, CC9, P30 & More

in GA Guides, Handguns, Pistols

The best HK pistols are built to a standard most makers do not try to meet. Heckler & Koch designs its handguns for police and military contracts and NATO durability testing, and it shows in their reliability and price. Today’s lineup includes the striker-fired VP9 family, the U.S.-designed CC9, and the hammer-fired P30, while classics like the squeeze-cocking P7M8 live on in the used market.

Our writers have run a lot of HK pistols. We put 800 trouble-free rounds through a VP9CC, 1,000 rounds through a CC9 without cleaning it, and a few hundred through a VP9B whose trigger got better as we shot. We also tested the P30L and P30SK, the VP9SK, the VP40, and a P7M8 that has never failed to feed. For a wider look across brands, see our best 9mm pistols guide.

This is a lineup guide. We rank the HK pistols we have reviewed by what each one does best. You get what our writers saw at the range and what each cost when we tested it, since HK prices and model names have changed over the years.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best HK Pistols In 2026

HK model names can be confusing. Here is what matters when choosing.

Striker Fired Or Hammer Fired

The VP9 family, VP40, and CC9 are striker fired. The P30 and P2000 lines are hammer fired and come in several trigger variants, including DA/SA and HK’s LEM, a light double action system. The P7M8 uses a squeeze cocker in the front strap. Pick the system you will train with. Our best DA/SA compact carry pistols guide covers more hammer-fired options.

Size

The VP9 and P30L are full-size duty and home defense guns. The VP9SK and P30SK are subcompacts that share magazines, and full-size VP9 and P30 magazines work in them as extended mags. The VP9CC and CC9 are true micro-compacts for everyday carry. See our best micro-compact 9mm pistols guide for rivals.

Magazine Release And Ambidextrous Controls

HK is known for paddle magazine releases on the trigger guard. Many shooters love them, and they are naturally ambidextrous. The VP9B swaps to a reversible push button for shooters used to Glock or M&P style releases. The VP9CC keeps the paddle, and the CC9 is fully ambidextrous. Lefties should also see our best handguns for left-handed shooters guide.

Optics

The VP9B and VP9CC are optics ready. On the VP9B, plates are sold separately, and the RMR plate cost $39.95 at the time of review. The VP9CC’s optic cut sits up to 40 percent lower. HK also announced the VP9A1 K and F models in 2025, read our VP9A1 launch coverage. See our best pistol red dots guide for options.

Price And Value

HK pistols cost more than most. In our reviews, the VP9B listed at $899 with a street price closer to $750 at the time of review, the VP9CC at a base MSRP of $1,049, and the P30L at $1,149. Older HKs hold value well, and the out-of-production P7M8 sells above its original price. Our P2000SK review covers another used option.
