Small carry guns are hard to shoot well. Short grips, light slides and snappy recoil all work against fast, accurate follow-up shots, which is exactly what you need in a fight. A compensator built into the slide and barrel vents gas upward, pushes the muzzle down and makes a small pistol behave like a bigger one. Our FN 509 CC Edge reviewer shot it with and without the comp and put the difference in perceived recoil at 25 percent or more.
Factory carry comps used to be custom-shop items. Now SIG, Smith & Wesson, FN and Springfield all build them, and they fit standard holsters without the extra length of a screw-on comp. The best compensated pistols of 2026 below range from a 12-round .380 that fits in a pocket to a premium 9mm with a gold TiN barrel.
Comps are not free. They add blast and flash, especially indoors, and they can get hot. Our Smith & Wesson reviewer found the slide almost too hot to handle after a few 15-round mag dumps under 3.5 seconds. They also work best with full-power ammo. Know that going in.
Every pistol here was shot by a GunsAmerica Digest writer, and most went through hundreds of rounds. This guide focuses on carry guns. Race guns and full-size 2011s are left out on purpose.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Compensated Carry Pistols In 2026
A carry comp has to do two jobs: carry comfortably all day and shoot flat when it counts. Here is how to pick one.
How Much Does A Comp Really Help
Claims run from about 15 to 30 percent less muzzle rise. SIG says up to 30 percent for the P365-MACH3D and 20 to 25 percent for the X-Macro Comp. Our reviewers who tested on the clock said the difference is real, mostly in faster sight recovery between shots. It will not fix a bad grip.
Ammo Matters More With A Comp
A comp needs gas to work, so hot defensive loads get the most benefit. Light target loads may not cycle reliably in some guns, especially with a heavy red dot adding mass to the slide, which our FN reviewer warned about. Test your carry ammo and your practice ammo before you trust either.
Blast, Flash And Close Quarters
Gas going up means more blast near your face and more flash in low light. Our M&P reviewer noticed a more pronounced concussion around a VTAC barricade. Shooting from retention can also put that gas somewhere you do not want it. Our X-Macro Comp reviewer fired over 50 rounds from close retention with no problems, but practice it yourself.
Size, Capacity And Carry
Most factory carry comps add little or no length. The Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp is only 0.35 inch longer than the original. Capacity runs from 12 rounds of .380 to 17 or 18 rounds of 9mm in a P365-size or compact frame. Pick the size you will actually carry every day.
Optics And Sights
Almost every comp pistol now ships optic ready, and a dot pairs well with a flatter-shooting gun because you can track the dot through recoil. See our best pistol red dots. Check the mounting system too. Springfield’s Variable Interface System skips adapter plates altogether.
Best Compensated Pistols Under $1,000
Five of the six pistols here listed for under $1,000 when we reviewed them. The FN 509 CC Edge is the exception, and it is a premium gun with a premium price. A comp revolver is another option. Our S&W Performance Center Model 19 Carry Comp review covers one.

Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Carry Comp: Best Compensated Carry Pistol Overall (2026)
The M&P M2.0 Carry Comp gives you what our reviewer wanted in a carry gun: a light and optic mount, an integrated comp, 15+1 capacity and flawless reliability. He fired several hundred rounds of 115 to 147 grain ammo with no malfunctions, and the gun also ran a USPSA match with stages near 30 rounds.

He estimated the Power Port cut felt recoil by 15 to 30 percent, and he was hitting low-ready double taps at 10 yards in about 0.8 second. Five-shot groups at 10 yards ran about 2 inches across five loads, with Hornady 147-grain XTP the best at 1.61 inches. The flat-face Performance Center trigger measured 4.5 pounds every time, and the ClearSight cut keeps gas off the optic.
Downsides are heat and blast. The slide got almost too hot to handle after fast mag dumps, and the concussion is noticeable around barricades. His plastic optic plate needed a quick sanding before the dot mounted. MSRP was $799 for the standard model at the time of review in 2024. More options are in our best Smith & Wesson pistols guide.

SIG P365 X-Macro Comp: Best Compensated Micro-Compact (2026)
SIG put a 17+1 magazine and an integrated comp in a P365-size package, and our reviewer said SIG knocked it out of the park. He shot several hundred rounds at the SIG Academy and more than 500 more at home, and he never had, or saw anyone else have, a single malfunction.
Read our full SIG P365 X-Macro Comp review here.
From a 3.1-inch barrel at 15 yards, groups ran 1 to 2 inches with everything he tried. Military ball grouped right at 2 inches, Speer frangible under 1.75, and Hornady 147-grain XTP was the best. He went prone at 50 yards to stretch it, and the gun did better than he expected. The straight X trigger broke at 5 pounds, 4 ounces. Not a match trigger, but plenty for carry.
SIG claims 20 to 25 percent less muzzle flip, and he said the reduction was noticeable enough to justify the comp. It weighs 21 3/8 ounces, and the 17-round magazines fit older P365s too. It was expected to sell for about $799.99 at the time of review in 2022. See the rest of the line in our best SIG Sauer pistols guide.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 17+1
- Barrel: 3.1 in
- Weight: 21 3/8 oz

Springfield Echelon 4.0C Comp: Most Accurate Compensated Pistol Under $700 (2026)
The Echelon 4.0C Comp was the most accurate gun in this group in our testing. Off a bench at 17 yards with a red dot, Fiocchi 147-grain Defense Dynamics grouped 0.76 inch, and Blazer Brass Reduced Recoil 100-grain went 1.06 inches. Our reviewer focused on defensive ammo and said it was reliable across wildly different loads.

The ported barrel vents through the slide to cut muzzle rise, and the removable Central Operating Group lets you swap grip modules. The Variable Interface System mounts many red dots directly with no plate, which he called a superior system with fewer points of failure. It weighs 24 ounces with the flush 15-round magazine and 25 with the 18-rounder, and both come in the box.
MSRP was $679 at the time of review in 2025. It is also a pick in our concealed carry guide, but if you want a compensated compact that shoots this well for the money, it belongs here too.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 15 and 18 round magazines included (10 and 15 round models available)
- Barrel: 4 in, ported
- Weight: 24 oz (flush mag), 25 oz (extended)
- Size: 7.25 in long, 1.2 in wide

Pros
- 0.76-inch best group at 17 yards

FN 509 CC Edge: Best Premium Compensated Carry Pistol (2026)
The 509 CC Edge is FN’s dressed-up carry gun, with a removable comp, front and rear slide cuts and a gold TiN, hammer-forged, target-crowned 4.2-inch barrel. Our reviewer shot it with and without the compensator and put the drop in perceived recoil at 25 percent or more.

Groups at 10 yards ran close to 1 inch with Norma ammo, and he said the barrel could likely out-shoot him. The trigger broke at 5 pounds where he placed his finger, but he had trouble with some creep. The iron sights sit low enough to stay useful through an optic window, a nice backup if the dot fails.
He also warned that a heavy optic plus light ball ammo could cause problems with the comp, because the comp reduces slide energy while the optic adds mass. The MSRP was $1,569 at the time of review in 2023. That is a lot, but the 509 CC Edge feels like a custom carry gun out of the box.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 10 or 12/15 round magazines
- Barrel: 4.2 in, hammer forged, TiN finish
- Length: 7.5 in
- Weight: 25.5 oz
- Trigger: 5 lb (measured)
- Price: $1,569 MSRP (2023 review)
Pros
- 25 percent or more less perceived recoil
- About 1-inch groups at 10 yards
- Low irons usable with an optic
- Premium finish and barrel
Cons
- Expensive
- Some trigger creep

SIG P365-MACH3D: Best New Compensated P365 (2026)
The MACH3D is SIG’s newest flat-shooting P365. SIG designed a 3.4-inch bull barrel and the MACH3D compensator as one system, and it claims up to 30 percent less muzzle rise. It uses the XMACRO grip, holds 17 rounds, ships with two 17-round steel magazines and has the SIG-LOC Compact optic cut. It measures 7.2 inches long and weighs 23 ounces with a magazine.
Read our full SIG P365-MACH3D review here.
Our writer shot it at a SIG-hosted event with SIG guns and ammo, so this was not an independent reliability test. What we can say is that the comp made a clear difference in recoil control and muzzle movement during rapid fire. Long-term reliability is still an open question until we get one for a full review. If you want the newest P365 comp setup, this is it, but the X-Macro Comp has the longer track record.
Key Specs
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 17 rounds, two steel magazines included
- Barrel: 3.4 in bull barrel with MACH3D compensator
- Length: 7.2 in
- Weight: 23 oz with magazine
- Optics: SIG-LOC Compact cut
Pros
- Clear reduction in muzzle movement
- 17 rounds in a P365-size gun
- Comp and barrel designed together
Cons
- Only tested at a SIG-hosted event
- No long-term reliability data yet

Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp: Best Compensated Pocket Pistol (2026)
A compensated .380 sounds like a gimmick until you shoot one. This Performance Center Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp is a true micro with a 10-round flush magazine and a 12-round extended, and our reviewer said the ported barrel keeps the muzzle flat. The trigger measured 4 pounds with a crisp break and positive reset, excellent for the class.

His one complaint was the sights. Out of the box, it grouped several inches left at 10 yards. He shot a Ruger LCP Gen II in the same session to make sure it was not him, then fixed the offset. After that, Cor-Bon 90-grain JHP printed a 1.471-inch five-shot group at 10 yards, freehand.
The comp adds only 0.35 inch of length over the standard Bodyguard 2.0, and the upgrades add about $100, for an MSRP of $549 at the time of review in 2026. It is also in our pocket pistol guide. If you carry a .380 and want it to shoot flatter, this is the one.
Key Specs
- Caliber: .380 ACP
- Capacity: 10+1 flush, 12+1 extended
- Trigger: 4 lb (measured)
- Compensation: ported barrel, slide cut ahead of front sight
- Length: 0.35 in longer than standard Bodyguard 2.0
- Price: $549 MSRP (2026 review)
Pros
- Flat-shooting for a micro .380
- Excellent trigger for the class
- 12-round option
- 1.471-inch group at 10 yards freehand
Cons
- Sights were off out of the box
- Still a .380

Final Thoughts On The Best Compensated Carry Pistols Of 2026
The Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Carry Comp is the best compensated carry pistol for most people. It ran several hundred rounds without a hiccup, the trigger is excellent and it costs under $800. The SIG P365 X-Macro Comp is the pick if you want 17+1 in a smaller gun, and the Springfield Echelon 4.0C Comp shot the tightest groups here for $679.
The FN 509 CC Edge is the premium choice, the new SIG P365-MACH3D is promising but still needs a full test, and the Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp makes a pocket .380 shoot flatter than it has any right to.
Whatever you carry, practice with your actual carry ammo, learn how the comp behaves from retention and in low light, and remember it gets hot.
