Best 9mm Revolvers (2026): Carry, Range & Competition

in GA Guides, Handguns, Revolvers

The best 9mm revolvers of 2026 solve a problem revolver shooters have complained about for decades: ammo cost. Our writer found 9mm for about 18 cents a round when he shopped around, compared with roughly 50 cents for .38 Special, at the time of his comparison. That is the whole pitch. You get a wheelgun’s simplicity, a cartridge you already stock for your pistols, and practice ammo you can afford to actually shoot.

There are tradeoffs. The 9mm is rimless, so most 9mm revolvers use full moon clips to hold and eject the rounds. The 9mm also does not carry the heavy roll crimp of a revolver cartridge, which means lightweight guns can suffer crimp jump, where a bullet walks forward under recoil and ties up the cylinder. Our writers have tested this exact problem, and it shapes the rankings below.

This guide covers carry snubbies, steel duty-size guns, a multi-caliber Taurus, and a pair of eight-shot competition revolvers. We ranked them on Digest testing first: our full S&W 940 review logged 300 rounds, and our 9mm revolver head-to-head put the 940 against the Ruger LCR at the range. Where we only have launch coverage, we say so. For .38 Special and .357 Magnum carry guns, see our best personal defense revolvers and best snub nose revolvers guides.

Prices are labeled with their source: MSRP at launch, MSRP at the time of review, or the manufacturer’s current listing as of October 2026. Several of these guns go in and out of production, so check GunsAmerica for new and used examples. Start with the buyer’s guide.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best 9mm Revolvers In 2026

A 9mm revolver is a niche inside a niche, and that makes the details matter more. Here is what to look for before you buy one.

Moon Clips Or No Moon Clips

Nearly every 9mm revolver is built around full moon clips. Clips act as a speed loader and give the ejector something to push against, so empties come out together. Without them, rimless rounds can headspace oddly and may not eject. Our S&W 940 reviewer had zero problems with the three included TK Custom clips, but loose rounds did not sit as reliably. Buy extra clips and a clip tool, and practice loading and unloading them.

Crimp Jump And Weight

Crimp jump is the big 9mm revolver gotcha. In our head-to-head, a 147-grain bullet pulled forward in the 17.2-ounce Ruger LCR and wedged between the cylinder and frame, a slow malfunction to clear. The heavier S&W 940 never did it with the same ammo. Light revolvers and hot loads make it worse, so 9mm +P may be a poor choice in a featherweight. Test your carry load by firing four rounds and measuring the fifth.

Barrel Length And Size

Snub 9mm revolvers usually run 1.87 to 2.25 inches of barrel and are built for concealed carry. Three- to six-inch guns are easier to shoot well, give more velocity, and suit home defense, the range, and competition. Our best ankle carry handguns guide covers the smallest end of the size range.

Sights And Trigger

Snub revolvers often have a fixed trench rear sight. The S&W 940 uses a dovetailed rear and an XS tritium front, and our head-to-head writer said that rear sight is why he could ring steel at 25 yards. The LCR has a smoother trigger but a harder-to-use rear sight. Larger revolvers usually have adjustable or fiber-optic sights and hand-tuned actions.

Capacity

Snubbies hold five. Mid-size guns like the Rock Island AL9.0 hold six, the Taurus 692 holds seven, and the competition guns from Smith & Wesson and Ruger hold eight. More shots mean fewer reloads in a match, and for defense a fast moon clip reload matters more than one extra round.

Price And Availability

9mm revolvers are made in smaller batches than .38 and .357 guns, and some models are listed as currently unavailable by the maker. Expect roughly $600 for budget steel guns and $1,000 to $1,600 for premium and custom shop guns, based on launch and review-time pricing. The used market on GunsAmerica is often the fastest way to find a discontinued model.

Best 9mm Revolvers Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Smith & Wesson 940: Best Overall (2026)

The Smith & Wesson 940 is the best 9mm revolver for most buyers in 2026. Smith first built the 940 in 1991 and brought it back with upgrades that matter: a fluted barrel with a fully shrouded ejector rod, an XS tritium front sight, a dovetailed rear, and VZ Black Cherry Diamond grips. It ships with three TK Custom full moon clips in a hard case.

Our reviewer fired 300 rounds of five different loads and got no misfires or drag with the clips. The Winchester 147-grain JHP clocked 947 feet per second and produced the best accuracy at ten yards, and he could still get hits from 15 yards and beyond. In our head-to-head, the 940 never suffered crimp jump, and its squared-off backstrap kept it from rolling in the hand. It is heavier than alloy snubs and best carried on the belt, not in a pocket. The MSRP was $999 at the time of review. See our S&W 940 vs LCR head-to-head for the full comparison.

Ruger LCR 9mm: Best Lightweight Carry (2026)

The Ruger LCR 9mm is the best lightweight 9mm revolver for carry. Our reviewer called it the most modern J-frame-size revolver out there, because Ruger pairs a steel cylinder and barrel with a polymer fire control housing to keep weight down. At 17.2 ounces, it is about six ounces lighter than the S&W 940, which is a big deal in a pocket or on an ankle.

Read our full Ruger LCR 9mm review here.

The LCR’s friction-reducing trigger is smooth and easy to roll, and our head-to-head writer could shoot it without moon clips. The tradeoffs are real, though. The rear sight is harder to use, the rounded grip rolls more in recoil, and the gun did suffer crimp jump with 147-grain ammo in our testing. Test your carry load carefully. MSRP was $809 at the time of our 2022 review, and our head-to-head writer saw it for around $650 at the time of his comparison.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Capacity: 5 (full moon clips)
  • Barrel: 1.87 in
  • Overall length: 6.5 in
  • Weight: 17.2 oz
  • Action: Double action only
  • Sights: Pinned ramp front, integral rear
  • MSRP: $809 at the time of review

  • Fires without moon clips in our testing
  • Much cheaper than the 940

Cons

  • Crimp jump with 147-grain ammo in our test

Ruger SP101 9mm: Best All-Steel Ruger (2026)

The Ruger SP101 9mm is the pick if you like the LCR’s price class but want steel weight to fight recoil and crimp jump. Ruger added a 9mm SP101 alongside its 9mm LCRx in 2017, and our launch coverage noted the SP101 at 25 ounces with a 2.25-inch barrel and a five-shot cylinder. That is essentially the same weight class as the S&W 940.

The SP101 is famous for being overbuilt. It has a triple-locking cylinder, a transfer bar safety, and a grip frame that takes many custom grips, and it ships with three full moon clips. As of October 2026, Ruger lists the 9mm SP101 (model 5783) at a $939 MSRP but shows it as currently unavailable, so the used market is the likely route. We have not published a full review of the 9mm version. Read our 9mm SP101 launch coverage for the original details.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Capacity: 5 (full moon clips)

Rock Island Armory AL9.0: Best Budget (2026)

The Rock Island Armory AL9.0 is the best budget 9mm revolver, and it is a six-shooter. Our reviewer called it an unexpected pleasure: a steel-frame revolver with a three-inch barrel, textured rubber grips, a high-visibility front sight insert, and a windage-adjustable rear. The steel frame gives it weight, so recoil is mild and fast strings flow.

It comes with two full moon clips and a stripper tool. Our reviewer shot Armscor FMJ out to 25 yards with very manageable recoil and posted twelve-round fast and slow strings at 7 and 25 yards. The three-inch barrel splits the difference between a carry snub and a range gun, which makes it a good nightstand revolver too. The MSRP was $599 at the time of review. For the money, it is the easiest way into 9mm wheelguns.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Capacity: 6 (full moon clips)
  • Barrel: 3 in
  • Frame: Steel
  • Action: Double/single action

Taurus 692: Best Multi-Caliber Revolver (2026)

The Taurus 692 is the most versatile 9mm revolver on this list because it is not only a 9mm revolver. It ships with two cylinders, one for .357 Magnum and .38 Special and one for 9mm, and you swap them with one press. Our SHOT Show 2018 writer liked that survivalist types could carry one gun that runs three common cartridges, and that new revolver shooters could train with cheap 9mm.

The version we saw had a 6.5-inch barrel, a seven-shot cylinder, and a 45.8-ounce weight, so this is a range, hunting, and home gun rather than a carry piece. The seven-round capacity is a nice bump over the classic six-shot .357. The MSRP was $659 at launch. Read our SHOT Show first look below. We have not published a full review.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm, .357 Magnum, .38 Special (two cylinders)
  • Capacity: 7
  • Barrel: 6.5 in (as shown at launch)
  • Overall length: 11.64 in
  • Weight: 45.8 oz
  • Action: Double/single action
  • MSRP: $659 at launch

  • Two cylinders cover three cartridges
  • Seven-shot capacity
  • Cheap 9mm practice for a .357
  • Good value at launch price

  • Heavy, not a carry gun
  • SHOT Show coverage only
  • Cylinder swap adds a part to keep track of

The Ruger Super GP100 Competition Revolver in 9mm is a full-size, eight-shot Custom Shop gun built for USPSA and ICORE revolver shooters. It has a 6-inch barrel, a short cylinder with an extended barrel shank that shortens freebore and lightens the cylinder for faster lockup and a lighter double-action pull, a skeletonized shroud, adjustable target sights with a fiber-optic front, and Hogue hardwood grips.

Every Custom Shop revolver leaves the factory with a hand-tuned action. Our SHOT Show 2020 coverage listed the 9mm Super GP100 at a $1,549 suggested retail price at launch, the same as the eight-shot .357 Magnum version. It runs on moon clips, so reloads are fast. Smith & Wesson Performance Center 929: Best Eight-Shot Smith & Wesson (2026)

The Smith & Wesson Performance Center 929 is the Jerry Miculek Signature eight-shot 9mm revolver, and it is the gun Smith built for serious revolver competitors. Our SHOT Show 2014 coverage described a 6.5-inch barrel with a removable compensator, chamfered charge holes for fast moon clip reloads, and chrome accents.

At the same launch, Smith showed the seven-shot 986, a five-inch 9mm with a titanium cylinder. Our writer shot the 986 on a filthy range gun that had been running for hours and still got clean groups, though he said recoil felt a bit sharper than a standard .38. Both guns come from the Performance Center, so expect premium pricing and limited availability. Read our launch coverage; we have not published a full review of either.

Key Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Capacity: 8 (full moon clips)
  • Barrel: 6.5 in with removable compensator

Final Thoughts On The Best 9mm Revolvers Of 2026

The best 9mm revolver for most buyers in 2026 is the Smith & Wesson 940. It has real sights, never suffered crimp jump in our testing, and shoots like a much bigger gun. The Ruger SP101 9mm is the steel Ruger alternative if you can find one, the Rock Island Armory AL9.0 is the budget six-shooter, and the Taurus 692 is the multi-caliber jack of all trades. For competition, the Ruger Super GP100 and the Smith & Wesson Performance Center 929 give you eight shots on moon clips.
