The Quietest Suppressor I’ve Ever Tested? The Tenet Vesper Uses AirPods-Like Technology

The Tenet Vesper 30 weighs just 9.9 ounces despite its full 8-inch length. For a hunting suppressor, that combination of weight and sound reduction is impressive.

Suppressors have been around for well over a century, so genuinely new ideas are increasingly hard to come by. The new Tenet Vesper 30 and Vesper 6.5 suppressors are interesting because Tenet isn’t simply changing the shape of a traditional baffle stack. There are several different technologies working inside these suppressors, including something Tenet calls phase shift technology.

After shooting both versions, I’ll make a pretty big statement: the Tenet Vesper is the quietest centerfire rifle suppressor I’ve personally tested.

That’s subjective. I didn’t have a laboratory-grade sound meter for this test, and I’m not going to pretend my ears are calibrated instruments. I’ll be doing controlled comparisons against other suppressors in the future. But I’ve shot a lot of suppressors over the years, and the Vesper is quiet!

Tenet Vesper Specs

The Vesper is 3D printed from Grade 5 titanium, allowing Tenet to manufacture internal geometries that would be impossible to produce with conventional machining.

There are currently two versions, the Vesper 30 and Vesper 6.5.

Both are 8 inches long, direct-thread 5/8×24 and manufactured from Grade 5 titanium. The Vesper 30 weighs just 9.9 ounces, while the Vesper 6.5 comes in at 9.6 ounces.

That combination of suppression, length and sub-10-ounce weight is what really interests me as a shooter and hunter.

Tenet currently lists 40 dB of sound reduction for both models. The company reports 123 dBA at the shooter’s ear for the Vesper 30 using M80 ball from a 20-inch barrel, and 122 dBA for the Vesper 6.5 using 140-grain Sierra Match ammunition from a 20-inch 6.5 Creedmoor.

Suppressor measurements change with the rifle, ammunition, barrel length, atmospheric conditions, microphone location and testing methodology. Even Tenet specifically notes that its published numbers apply to the rifle and ammunition combinations tested and aren’t universal figures.

That is why my future testing will focus primarily on same-day, same-rifle, same-ammunition comparisons between suppressors rather than pretending one decibel number tells the entire story.

Phase Shift Technology

One of the Vesper’s most interesting features is what Tenet calls phase shift technology, which manipulates the timing and interaction of pressure waves inside the suppressor. Think noise-canceling headphones, but without the electronics. The Vesper uses internal geometry to bring pressure waves together out of phase so they can partially oppose one another.

The internal architecture isn’t simply one repeating baffle design. Different sections of the suppressor perform different jobs, and the middle section incorporates what Tenet calls phase shift technology.

The easiest way to understand the concept is to think about noise-canceling headphones.

Noise-canceling headphones manipulate sound waves so opposing waves partially cancel each other through destructive interference. The Vesper obviously isn’t electronically generating another sound wave, but the basic physics concept is similar.

A gunshot sends extremely high-pressure gas and pressure waves into the suppressor. Tenet uses internal pathways made possible through additive manufacturing to manipulate how those pressure waves travel and, importantly, when they arrive.

Instead of allowing pressure waves to arrive together and reinforce one another, the geometry can change their timing so waves interact out of phase. Where those pressure waves oppose one another, their amplitudes can partially cancel.

Even without perfect cancellation, spreading pressure events over time can reduce the magnitude of the peak pressure event heading toward the muzzle.

Traditional suppressors primarily give expanding propellant gas additional volume, redirect it through baffles and provide more time for pressure to drop before the gas reaches the atmosphere. The Vesper still manages gas, but part of its architecture is also designed around manipulating the timing and interaction of the pressure waves themselves.

Additive manufacturing is critical here because it allows Tenet to create internal channels and geometries that would be extremely difficult or impossible to produce using conventional machining.

Shooting the Vesper 30 and Vesper 6.5

Tenet designed the Vesper primarily as a lightweight hunting and precision-rifle suppressor, and at less than 10 ounces it adds surprisingly little weight to the end of a rifle.

For this initial test, I shot the Vesper 6.5 on a 6.5 Creedmoor and the Vesper 30 on both a .300 PRC and .300 Blackout, including supersonic and 220-grain subsonic ammunition.
The .300 PRC was remarkably quiet for a large magnum cartridge of that size. The Vesper 6.5 was similarly impressive, but the real party trick was .300 Blackout with subsonic ammunition. The video does a better job demonstrating this than I can describe in print.

Importantly, this isn’t intended to be a high-volume, low-backpressure semiautomatic suppressor. The Vesper is a lightweight titanium suppressor designed primarily around maximum sound reduction on precision and hunting rifles.

Direct Thread and the Horizon Brake

The Vesper is direct-thread 5/8×24. Skipping a HUB mounting system helps Tenet keep weight, length and complexity to a minimum.

The Vesper doesn’t use a HUB mounting system. It’s direct-thread 5/8×24. A HUB system adds another interface, tolerance stacking, additional weight and potentially additional length. Direct thread keeps things simple and more precise. I personally prefer it.

The muzzle end of the Vesper accepts Tenet’s Horizon Brake for shooters who want additional recoil reduction without changing suppressors. Vesper shown next to a Limited 30 wearing the Horizon break.

Tenet also designed the muzzle end to accept its Horizon Brake. That gives shooters who want additional recoil reduction the ability to add a brake to the end of the Vesper. Because the Vesper has already reduced and redirected so much of the gas, however, don’t expect the brake to behave like it does on Tenet’s recoil-focused Limited suppressor.

Initial Verdict

I tested the Vesper 30 on .300 PRC and .300 Blackout and the Vesper 6.5 on 6.5 Creedmoor. Both versions were exceptionally quiet.

If I were choosing a suppressor specifically for a high-volume semiautomatic rifle, I’d be looking at a different category. But for a hunting or precision bolt gun, the combination here is impressive.

Eight inches. Under 10 ounces. Grade 5 titanium. And, subjectively, the quietest centerfire rifle suppressor I’ve tested to date.

The phase shift technology makes the Vesper technically interesting, but ultimately I care more about results and it delivered.

From what I’ve experienced so far, it works.Next, I want to put the Vesper 30 and Vesper 6.5 head-to-head against some of the best suppressors currently available under identical conditions. That’s where we’ll find out just how good the Vesper really is. Standby for more coming soon.
