Saturday Night Live took another shot at American gun culture recently, and viewers may disagree about whether it hit the target.

The prerecorded “Guns for Women” sketch aired during the October 3 episode hosted by Dakota Johnson. It was Johnson’s third time hosting the show, with Turnstile appearing as the musical guest.

The sketch opens with several women discussing their husbands’ interest in buying firearms.

“Men and their guns,” one woman says before the group references the old Freudian claim that guns represent an extension of male anatomy.

Johnson’s character, Sheryl, then asks an obvious question: Why isn’t there a gun designed as an extension of womanhood?

Enter the “Glunt.”

Plenty of Gun Jokes, Plus a Message?

The fictional handgun closely resembles female anatomy and comes loaded with increasingly obvious innuendo.

Its trigger is difficult to find. It needs to be “warmed up” before it works. Instead of going “bang,” it shouts, “Hey!”

Sheryl also paraphrases the famous defensive-gun slogan by declaring, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good girl with a va-gun.”

When another woman objects that owning a firearm is dangerous, an apparent accidental discharge interrupts her. The shot brings down a bird, prompting the women to briefly celebrate the shooter’s aim.

The commercial ends by revealing that men designed the entire product. It is also supposedly sold at “the opposite of Dick’s Sporting Goods.”

Subtle it was not.

Satire or Another Swipe at Gun Owners?

Most of the sketch is clearly built around anatomy jokes and the tendency of companies to make products “for women” by changing their shape or color.

Still, the gun-culture references seem intentional.

The opening connects firearm ownership with insecurity about masculinity. The accidental discharge leans into the idea that firearms create danger inside the home. The “good guy with a gun” line receives a crude rewrite, while none of the characters shows any real interest in responsible gun ownership.

That leaves room for two very different readings.

Some viewers may see a mostly harmless commercial parody aimed at gendered marketing. Others may view it as another SNL sketch portraying gun owners as insecure, reckless or foolish.
