ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: 4K With a Catch

The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max packs 4K recording, a genuinely useful touchscreen, and a removable 18650 battery into one rifle scope camera. It is one of the easiest systems I’ve used in the field, but the image quality leaves a catch that shooters spending $600 need to see.

ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: A Different Kind of 4K Scope Camera

The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max records 4K video through your rifle scope with a built-in touchscreen and removable 18650 battery. Recording your shots through a rifle scope has become increasingly popular among hunters and precision rifle shooters. The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max enters an uncrowded market with several features that immediately separate it from the competition. After spending time behind the rifle with the camera mounted to my Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x, I found several things that I genuinely loved, along with a few areas where I think there is still room for improvement.

The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max is designed for hunters and precision rifle shooters who want to record exactly what they see through the optic. It records in resolutions up to 4K at 60 FPS while also offering lower resolutions with higher frame rates, including 720p at an impressive 240 FPS.

One of its standout features is the integrated HD touchscreen. Unlike many competing systems, nearly every setup task happens directly on the camera without requiring a phone. The aluminum housing is rated IP64 for weather resistance, weighs approximately 280 grams (9.8 ounces), accepts SD cards up to 512GB, and runs on a removable 18650 battery that ScopeMate rates for up to 13 hours of recording. The package includes multiple adapter inserts to fit different ocular diameters, a USB-C cable, carrying bag, and the necessary installation tools.

At $600 without an SD card, the ScopeMate sits in the premium scope camera category.

ScopeMate Installation: Easy Once You Know the Focus Trick

Installation is straightforward, although the initial setup deserves one recommendation. Follow ScopeMate’s instructional YouTube videos before trying to configure everything yourself.

The focus adjustment offers an enormous amount of travel. Initially, I struggled to achieve the image quality I expected because I was trying to focus it manually without using the camera’s digital zoom feature. Once I followed the recommended setup process and used the onboard digital zoom while focusing, getting the reticle sharp became much easier.

I tested the 52mm version using the supplied adapter inserts on my Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x. The included shims centered everything securely, although aligning the camera isn’t quite as effortless as some of the competition. The camera seemed slightly off center, causing me to have a narrow band to avoid an upper scope shadow.

The Touchscreen Is the ScopeMate’s Killer Feature

The touchscreen is easily my favorite feature. After years of using the TriggerCam 2.1 system, having a bright display built directly into the camera completely changes the user experience. Instead of connecting to a phone every time I wanted to verify alignment or adjust settings, I could simply look at the display on the device.

Changing resolution, frame rate, ISO, Wi-Fi, playback, and image settings happens directly on the device. Better yet, I could immediately verify focus without removing the camera or opening an app.

The touchscreen responded well throughout testing. However, the icons are fairly small, so it’s easy to accidentally tap the wrong button with gloves or larger fingers.

ScopeMate also includes Wi-Fi connectivity for live viewing and downloading footage. The feature worked well during testing. However, I rarely found myself using it because the onboard display already handled nearly everything I wanted to do.

Removable 18650 Power Is a Huge Field Advantage

This may be my second favorite feature. Rather than relying on a permanently installed battery, the ScopeMate runs on a standard removable 18650 cell. That’s a major advantage for anyone spending long days in the field.

If one battery dies, I simply swap in another and continue recording within seconds. I already carry spare 18650 batteries for other equipment, so adding one more to my pack isn’t a burden.

There is another long-term benefit as well. Internal rechargeable batteries inevitably lose capacity over time. Once that happens, many electronics become difficult or impossible to use effectively. Since the ScopeMate uses removable batteries, replacing a worn-out cell costs very little instead of replacing the entire camera. After a few years, my TriggerCam’s internal battery won’t record for more than a few minutes, but with the ScopeMate I don’t have to worry.

The only drawback is size. The battery compartment adds noticeable bulk to the housing.

ScopeMate Controls Are Simple, but the Housing Is Big

Besides the touchscreen, the ScopeMate uses three physical buttons across the top of the housing. One powers the unit, another starts recording, and the third activates Wi-Fi. The controls are simple, intuitive, and easy to operate without taking your eyes completely off the rifle.

The camera itself is fairly large. Mounted behind my scope, it extended far enough rearward above the scope that it interfered with the bill of my baseball cap. I often found myself turning my hat backwards while shooting. As a right-handed shooter, the housing also completely blocked my view of the windage turret.

Fortunately, I could still see my elevation turret and even glance at my ballistic calculator with my left eye while staying behind the rifle. Since I rarely dial wind, the obstruction wasn’t a deal breaker, but it’s something potential buyers should know before purchasing.

4K to 240 FPS: What the ScopeMate Actually Records

The ScopeMate offers numerous recording options, including 4K, 2.7K, 1080p, and 720p with frame rates reaching 240 FPS. The high-speed modes were genuinely fun to use.

Recording .22 LR at 720p and 240 FPS allowed me to slow footage enough to actually watch bullets flying toward the target. That alone made for some entertaining footage.

I also spent considerable time experimenting with various frame rates while shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor at 625 yards. Unfortunately, I never managed to capture bullet trace. Some of that comes from recoil and the difficulty of recording trace in general. However, I could still clearly watch impacts through the scope because the camera doesn’t obstruct the usable field of view.

Although field of view naturally decreases as magnification increases, the ScopeMate essentially records the entire image visible through the scope. More importantly, I could continue using my optic normally whether the recorder was powered on or not.

The 4K Catch: ScopeMate Image Quality Falls Short

This is where my biggest disappointment surfaced. While the ScopeMate technically records in resolutions up to 4K, the actual image quality never looked like what I personally expect from modern 4K footage. Targets remained easy to identify. I could clearly observe impacts and misses at 625 yards. The reticle also stayed crisp throughout testing.

However, grass, rocks, brush, and other fine details consistently appeared softer than expected. No matter how much time I spent adjusting focus, the image never achieved the level of sharpness I was hoping for.

After discussing my results with ScopeMate’s support team, they confirmed that my camera was performing normally. That left me somewhat disappointed because I can actually capture sharper still images by simply holding my cellphone behind the eyepiece. Of course, that method isn’t practical while actively shooting, which is exactly why products like the ScopeMate exist.

ScopeMate vs. TriggerCam 2.1: Convenience or Sharper Detail?

Compared directly against my TriggerCam, the ScopeMate is significantly easier to focus and far more pleasant to operate. However, TriggerCam still produces noticeably sharper images, especially as magnification increases. At lower magnifications, the difference becomes less noticeable, but zooming in reveals considerably more softness in the ScopeMate footage.

Low-Light Test: Your Scope Sees More Than the Camera

The first thing I noticed was how little the ScopeMate affected the image I saw through my scope. ScopeMate told me roughly 30 percent of the available light is directed to the camera while the remaining 70 percent reaches your eye. In practice, though, it didn’t feel like I was giving up nearly that much brightness. Looking through the optic with the camera installed, I only noticed what I’d describe as a very slight tint or dimming. Perhaps five to ten percent. The comparison photos below illustrate the difference. More importantly, the camera never made me feel like I was sacrificing the usability of my riflescope during legal shooting hours.

The camera sensor itself tells a different story, though. As ambient light fades, video quality drops off much faster than what I see through the optic. Around 15 minutes after sunset, my recorded video became completely unusable, even though I could still comfortably see through the scope. Switching to still photos noticeably improved performance because the camera has more time to gather light, producing images that remained usable after video had already become too dark.

For hunters, this is worth considering. Game animals often become most active during the first and last minutes of legal shooting light. While the ScopeMate won’t significantly reduce what you can see through your scope, it may not produce footage that accurately captures what your eyes are seeing during those critical dawn and dusk moments.

ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Pros and Cons: What Matters in the Field

  • Pros: Built-in touchscreen, removable 18650 battery, up to 13 hours of recording, 4K at 60 FPS, 720p at 240 FPS, simple physical controls, Wi-Fi connectivity, and minimal interference with the usable scope image.
  • Cons: Softer image detail than expected from a premium 4K recorder, weaker low-light video performance, small touchscreen icons, a bulky housing, and potential obstruction of the windage turret for right-handed shooters.

ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Verdict: Convenience vs. Clarity

The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max does a lot of things exceptionally well. Its built-in touchscreen completely transforms the user experience. Likewise, the removable 18650 battery provides outstanding runtime while eliminating one of the biggest long-term concerns associated with internal rechargeable batteries. Everyday operation is considerably more convenient than other competing systems.

At the same time, image clarity leaves something to be desired. While the camera captures usable footage and accurately documents hits, misses, and the entire sight picture, it simply doesn’t produce the crisp image quality I expected from a premium 4K recorder. For shooters who prioritize the absolute sharpest footage possible, that’s worth considering.

Even so, I believe ScopeMate priced the S28-TSC Max fairly. If your priorities are ease of use, excellent battery life, onboard controls, and reliable operation, it offers a compelling package. If maximum image sharpness ranks above everything else, however, some competing options still maintain an edge.
