Rapper Flavor Flav Calls for Gun Ban

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Flavor Flav – yes, the guy with the giant clock necklace and a rap sheet for illegal gun possession – is now lecturing America on banning guns.

In a recent Newsweek op-ed and televised interview, Flav declared, “Our schools aren’t safe and our kids aren’t safe,” before rambling through a half-baked call to ban guns from “the wrong hands,” only somewhat aware that those were his own hands back in the day.

How would you respond to Flavor Flav?

Let’s break down the brilliance:

  • He admits he wasn’t a legal gun owner. “None of us was legal gun owners. So guns was in the wrong hands, and even my hands was the wrong hands at the time.” Translation: criminals break gun laws. Shocking revelation there, Flav.
  • He still wants the police to have guns. Because that worked out so well in the last century’s authoritarian regimes.
  • He glosses over Chicago’s reality. The mass shooting he references happened in a city with some of the strictest gun control in the nation. Those laws didn’t stop the shooter – they only stopped law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.

Here’s the truth: Guns aren’t the problem. Criminals are. The same criminals Flav once ran with, illegally carrying firearms while decent people remained disarmed and helpless.

He finishes his rant by asking “When is all of this killing going to stop?” The answer isn’t found in banning tools that millions of Americans use responsibly every day.

The answer is stopping violent criminals before they act – and ensuring citizens have the right to defend themselves when evil inevitably slips through the cracks.

So thanks for your insight, Flav. But until criminals start following gun bans, your argument is as useful as a broken clock.

It is very hard to see repentance in an individual, but Mr. Flav doesn’t seem too repentant. Perhaps instead of removing guns from society, we should remove criminals like Mr. Flav. That sounds like a win-win to me. Now, all we need is someplace to send them.
