A man believed to be an intruder was shot and killed inside a Miami home early Monday morning, but investigators say several critical questions remain unanswered.
Miami police responded shortly after 5 a.m. to a residence at 4606 Northwest Fifth Avenue. Miami Fire Rescue pronounced a man in his 40s dead at the scene.
According to reporting from CBS News Miami and Peter D’Oench, police are investigating whether someone inside the home shot the man after he entered the residence.
However, police have not yet confirmed that the deceased man forced his way inside. They also have not said whether he knew anyone living at the home.
One Person Questioned
Initial video from the scene appeared to show two people being taken into custody for questioning. Miami police later clarified that one person was being questioned in connection with the shooting.
No arrest or criminal charge had been announced at the time of publication.
Police also have not identified the person who fired the shot. Investigators said it remained unclear whether that individual owned or rented the home.
“There’s a lot that we still don’t know,” a Miami police representative told CBS News Miami.
Officers kept the area behind crime-scene tape for much of the day. Investigators later entered the residence with a search warrant, photographed the scene and carried several boxes of evidence from the home.
Too Early to Call It Self-Defense
The shooting may ultimately prove to be a case of an occupant defending a home. Right now, however, police have not confirmed enough details to reach that conclusion.
Investigators must determine why the deceased man was at the residence, how he entered and whether he posed an immediate threat. They must also establish whether the two men knew each other and what happened before the gunfire.
Police have not disclosed whether another weapon was recovered or how many shots were fired.
Neighbors told CBS News Miami that the shooting left them concerned about safety in the area. Some questioned whether the incident was a random home invasion or involved people with a prior connection.
