Dekalb County neighbors woke up to gunshots on March 23.

A Georgia homeowner shot to defend himself last week when he caught an intruder trying to break into his home.

According to the Daily Mail, the homeowner caught the suspect entering through the back of his home in DeKalb County at around 5:30 am. He used a gun he kept in his home to shoot the suspect.

Neighbors say they were startled but unsurprised to hear gunshots.

One neighbor, Melan Sydnor, told Fox 5 Atlanta “I was in the kitchen and then there were gunshots and it was really loud… about five minutes later the police pulled up.”

DeKalb County Police report that although the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital shortly after the altercation, he died from his injuries.

Police interviewed the homeowner after the shooting and concluded that he acted in self-defense. Therefore, he will not be charged for the incident.

One nearby resident reported that criminals had been prowling the neighborhood in the wee hours of the morning in search of unlocked doors.

Lesson learned: lock your doors, stay alert, and be like this homeowner. Have a self-defense gun that you are prepared to use.
