Best Semi-Auto .22 Rifles (2026): 10/22, Wildcat and M&P15-22

in GA Guides

Every semi-auto .22 rifle makes the same promise: cheap ammo, light recoil, and the kind of fun that empties a brick of ammo before lunch. Most of them keep that promise right up until the first bad box of rimfire ammo, a gritty trigger, or a takedown job that needs three hands and a prayer. The best semi auto 22 rifle for you depends less on the logo and more on what you want the rifle to teach you.

That is the angle here. Our best .22LR rifles guide covers the whole rimfire field, bolt guns and levers included. This guide is semi-auto only, and it splits the field three ways: the do-everything platform you can build on forever, the low-maintenance plinker that strips without tools, and the AR-pattern trainer that runs the same controls as your centerfire carbine.

Robert Sadowski put a factory Ruger 10/22 Carbine and a custom build through a range session this year and got five-shot groups around an inch at 25 yards with the factory gun. CitizenHush ran a Winchester Wildcat past 1,100 rounds without cleaning it. Tom McHale shot the Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 Performance Center with nine different loads at 50 yards. Those are the results behind this list.

A quick word on ammo. Semi-auto .22s are pickier than bolt guns because the cartridge has to cycle the action. Subsonic and quiet loads often will not. Buy a few different boxes, find what your rifle likes, and then buy that by the case.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Semi Auto 22 Rifle In 2026

Semi-auto .22s look alike on a rack. They do not live alike. Here is what separates them.

Magazine System

The Ruger 10-round rotary magazine is the de facto standard, and the BX-15 and BX-25 extend it without hurting reliability. Rifles that take Ruger pattern magazines, like the Winchester Wildcat, give you access to every 10/22 mag you already own. AR-pattern .22s use their own box magazines that look like AR mags but are not interchangeable with centerfire ones.

Controls And Manual Of Arms

If the .22 is a trainer for an AR-15, buy one where the safety, magazine release, bolt catch and charging handle all work like the real thing. If it is a plinker for new shooters, simple controls and a bolt you can lock back for a visible safe check matter more.

Takedown And Cleaning

All .22s get dirty fast. A rifle that drops its action out for cleaning in a few seconds gets cleaned. A rifle that needs tools and patience gets ignored until it jams. The Wildcat’s tool-free field strip is the best example here.

Trigger

Older 10/22 triggers were heavy and gritty. Current Ruger models ship with the BX-Trigger at about 2.75 pounds. The M&P15-22 Performance Center uses a two-stage trigger that mimics an AR. Aftermarket triggers can transform any of these, but they cost real money.

Suppressor Readiness

A threaded .22 is one of the most enjoyable suppressor hosts there is. Check the thread pitch and the thread length. Tom McHale found the M&P15-22 uses a full-length AR style thread cut, which needed a spacer to work with his rimfire can. Our best .22 suppressors guide covers the cans.

Upgrade Path

If you like to tinker, the 10/22 aftermarket is effectively endless: barrels, stocks, triggers and full receivers. Our best Ruger 10/22 upgrades guide sorts through them. If you never plan to change anything, buy the rifle that already works the way you want out of the box.

Ruger 10/22 Carbine: Best Semi-Auto .22 Platform (2026)

The 10/22 is the yardstick, and Ruger has built more than 10 million of them. Robert Sadowski’s 2026 review shot a factory Carbine with a Vortex Crossfire II scope and got five-shot groups averaging about an inch at 25 yards, opening to 1.25 to 1.5 inches at 50 yards with 40-grain loads. His custom build with a better barrel and trigger got under an inch at 50. That is the whole point of the 10/22: it starts good and can get great. We cover it in more depth in other guides, so we will keep this short.

Winchester Wildcat 22: Best Low-Maintenance Semi-Auto .22 (2026)

Here is a rifle that took a swing at the king and landed a few punches. The Wildcat takes Ruger 10/22 magazines, weighs about 4 pounds, and has a second magazine release built into the sides of the chassis. The party trick is the field strip: press one button, pull the trigger guard down, and the whole action drops out for cleaning. CitizenHush pushed his past 1,100 rounds without cleaning and had no malfunctions except with CCI Quiet, which he notes is finicky in every semi-auto he has fed it. He liked it enough to buy two and sell most of his other semi-auto .22s. You lose last-round bolt hold open with Ruger magazines, and the upper is polymer. At this price, those are easy trades. Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 Performance Center: Best AR-Style .22 Trainer (2026)

Most AR look-alike .22s are costumes. This one actually works like the real thing. The safety, magazine release, bolt catch and charging handle all function the way they do on a centerfire AR-15, and the upper and lower separate with two push pins. Tom McHale shot the Performance Center version at 50 yards with nine loads and got averages under an inch with CCI Green Tag and Eley Practice, with every load feeding. The two-stage trigger has about 2 pounds of first stage and breaks at about 5, close to a standard AR. The test rifle dates to 2016, and S&W’s current Performance Center listing is SKU 10205 with an M-LOK handguard, so confirm the configuration before you buy. One more check matters if you shop used. In 2019 S&W issued a safety alert on every M&P15-22 made before February 1, 2019 after finding improperly counterbored bolts that could fire on chambering. Inspection and any replacement bolt are free through S&W, so run the serial number before you load an older rifle. Back in 2016, Project Appleseed also temporarily banned the M&P15-22 from its events after reported out-of-battery malfunctions.

Which Semi-Auto .22 Fits Your Job?

Teaching a kid or a new shooter? Get the Wildcat or a basic 10/22 and spend the difference on ammo and eye protection. Want a project rifle you will still be changing in ten years? That is the 10/22, no contest. Training for an AR-15 class or a carbine match on a budget? The M&P15-22 runs the same drills with rimfire prices. Small game hunting? Any of the three will do it with a decent scope and an ammo choice the rifle actually likes. Already own an AR-15? A dedicated rimfire upper is another route to the same training, and our BoreBuddy Apogee AR22 upper review covers one.

Ammo and Care for a Semi-Auto .22

Semi-auto rimfires are pickier than bolt guns because the action runs on the energy of each round. If a rifle jams, try a different load before you blame the gun. Standard velocity target ammo often groups best, while high velocity ammo usually cycles the action more reliably. Buy a few boxes of different brands and see what your rifle likes, then buy that in bulk.

Rimfire ammo is dirty, and the fouling builds up in the chamber and bolt face. A rifle that runs fine for a few hundred rounds may start failing to extract once it gets dirty. Pull the bolt, wipe the bolt face and extractor, and run a bore snake through the barrel after a long day. Do not over-oil it; a light coat is plenty, and extra oil just traps grit.

Safety rules do not relax just because it is a .22. A .22 Long Rifle bullet can travel more than a mile, so know your backstop, especially when plinking at cans or steel. Ricochets off hard ground and water are real. Wear eye and ear protection; a suppressor helps your hearing but does not replace earplugs for everyone on the line. Teaching a new shooter is one of the best uses for a semi-auto .22, so start them single loading a round at a time before handing them a full magazine.

Magazines matter as much as ammo. Most feeding problems on a semi-auto .22 trace back to a worn or cheap magazine. Number your magazines and, if one keeps causing trouble, retire it. Store loaded magazines carefully, since rimfire rounds can get bent lips if they are crammed together. Keep it clean, feed it what it likes, and a good semi-auto .22 will run for thousands of rounds.

Conclusion: The Best Semi Auto 22 Rifles for 2026

If you only buy one semi-auto .22, buy a Ruger 10/22. It shot about an inch at 25 yards out of the box for our reviewer, and the upgrade path never ends. If you want the easiest rifle on the list to clean, the Winchester Wildcat 22 earns its spot by running past 1,100 rounds dirty and taking your existing 10/22 magazines. If the .22 exists to make you better with an AR-15, spend the extra on the M&P15-22 Performance Center and practice the real manual of arms for pennies a round.

Whichever you pick, test a few brands of ammo before you decide the rifle is the problem. Most semi-auto .22 “malfunctions” are really ammo problems. And treat every rimfire like it is loaded, because it is just as capable of hurting someone as any centerfire.
