Nevers and his girlfriend were in bed when two suspects broke in through the kitchen window. His friend, who had just returned from a trip to the Bahamas with him, was held at gunpoint in the living room. But Nevers acted fast, grabbing his own firearm and preparing for the worst.

As soon as the gunman entered the bedroom, chaos erupted. Nevers and the intruder exchanged fire, leaving Nevers with a shattered foot and a bullet wound in his back. His girlfriend was also shot—the bullet traveled through her back and lodged near her chest, too dangerous to remove. Despite his injuries, Nevers survived the ordeal, but the physical and emotional scars will take time to heal.
A High Price for a Low Reward
The suspects clearly thought they were going to walk away with some valuable loot, but their big score turned out to be nothing more than a bottle of Don Julio tequila, a chocolate bar, and a studio microphone. Nevers himself couldn’t believe it.
“These guys did this for nothing,” he told Fox 2 Detroit.
The suspected gunman, Phillip Price, was arrested and now faces a laundry list of charges, including assault with intent to murder and armed robbery as part of a 21-count indictment. Police believe Price knew Nevers and was specifically targeting items inside the home.
A Reminder of Why Self-Defense Matters
This wild shootout is yet another reminder of why the right to self-defense is so critical. Nevers didn’t ask for a fight, but when it came to his doorstep, he was prepared. Even with injuries, he and his loved ones are alive today because he had the means to defend himself.
And in the end, all this violence, all this destruction—for a bottle of tequila and a candy bar. It’s almost too absurd to believe, but it’s a stark reality check: criminals don’t always think rationally, and when they show up uninvited, the only thing that stands between you and them is your ability to defend yourself.
Nevers put it best: “I’m just happy everybody is alive and well. I mean, I really… I’m kind of glad the guy who shot me is still alive, too. I don’t wanna kill nobody.”

somewhat weird having a camera like that in your bedroom…
I don’t wanna kill nobody?
This poor guy also needs basic tactical thinking. Standing in a fatal funnel will get you “fatalitied.” Had he drug is girlfriend off the bed and put her behind the door and himself behind the doorway also, he would likely had the jump instead of having to react. Force the intruder to clear the room properly.
Shouldn’t have waited for Price to open the door. Nevers should have shot Price in the hallway. Price used a light – either a flashlight in his hand or a weapon light on the Glock rail.
He needs more defensive shooting (under stress) range time. That way the next time it will be the robber with the gun shot (hopefully fatal) injuries.
Lots more range time!!!
The home invader, Phillip Price, was of the non-Caucasian persuasion, because his photo is nowhere to be found.
Coulter’s Law? Really?
I love tequila but not that much… Too bad the perp didn’t die.
Nah, not die. Better some permanent physical disability so he has something to remind him for the rest of his miserable life of his poor decision.
