A late-night prank ended in tragedy when a Virginia teenager was shot and killed during a “ding-dong ditch” stunt intended for TikTok. Now, 27-year-old homeowner Tyler Chase Butler faces a second-degree murder charge, as prosecutors begin to unravel what happened in the early morning hours of May 3.
The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, when a group of teens allegedly knocked on Butler’s door as part of the prank and ran to hide. Butler told police he believed someone was trying to break into his home, reportedly hearing banging at the back door.
Armed with a firearm, Butler opened fire—killing 18-year-old Michael Bosworth Jr. and grazing another teen. A third teen was uninjured.
Initially, Butler was not arrested. Under Virginia law, homeowners have no duty to retreat if they reasonably believe they face an imminent threat—a standard often associated with “Stand Your Ground” protections. However, Butler’s legal defense began to unravel when the two surviving teens gave statements to investigators.

According to court documents, the teens admitted to participating in the prank but denied any attempt to break in. They stated the group had been ringing doorbells and filming reactions for social media, including earlier stops that night. In their account, after knocking on Butler’s door, they began to flee—only to be met with gunfire.
That detail could prove critical. Legal experts emphasize that self-defense must be proportionate to the threat faced at the moment.
“Being afraid is not enough to justify deadly force,” said criminal defense attorney Diane Toscano in an interview with Law & Crime. “There has to be a reasonable fear of imminent harm.”
Key questions in the case will center on the teens’ exact location when shots were fired. Forensic evidence—such as bullet trajectories and entry wounds—could determine whether the teens were running away or still posing a potential threat.
“If they had their backs turned and were fleeing, that’s going to be very difficult to justify,” Toscano noted.

Another factor will be Butler’s 911 call and initial statements to police. Prosecutors will examine whether his actions were rooted in genuine fear or a misjudgment that escalated into deadly force. Butler’s claim that he thought someone was breaking in may carry less legal weight if video or testimony shows the teens were retreating.
So far, prosecutors have charged Butler with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.
As the case moves toward trial, attorneys are expected to subpoena home surveillance footage and examine cell phone videos from the teens, who were reportedly recording the prank. Prosecutors face a delicate balance—pursuing justice for a deceased teen while considering whether the surviving participants could themselves face trespassing or other charges.
For now, the focus remains on the central legal issue: whether Butler’s decision to fire was a reasonable act of self-defense—or a deadly overreaction to what amounted to a juvenile prank gone horribly wrong.
Bosworth, a senior and lacrosse standout just weeks away from graduation, is being mourned by his family and classmates. The case serves as a sobering reminder of how fast social media-driven antics can spiral into irreversible consequences—and how the legal system must grapple with intent, perception, and proportionality in high-stakes self-defense claims.

Fool learned the hard way.
No sympathy whatsoever for the little Idiots. Tik Tok, your dead as a rock. Too Bad So Sad. Let the homeowner go.
Self defense, no duty to retreat and Castle doctrine. If someone is beating on my door at 3 AM you can bet I am in fear of bodily harm or my life. No prosecutor can convince a jury that this man was not in fear of his life or bodily harm. Only, he and he alone, knows. If he shot the kid in the back then there is a problem.
Some of these comments are ridiculous! Like “where were the parents”. Asleep at 3 am. You can’t watch a kid, especially a late teen, every minute. You teach them well and hope they make good decisions before making bad ones, like banging on a door at 3 am. It’s not like none of you ever slipped out of the house, or told your parents you were staying with or going somewhere with a friend then did something totally different (and sometimes stupid).
Blasting through the front door because someone is on the other side? Really? That’s not “over reaction”? Unless you have reason to believe they are armed or they actually stand a chance of breaching that’s an over reaction.
I’m not very liberal, much more conservative. I believe in defending my property. If the kid was running away with my TV or something of value I’d be tempted to shoot, but I think I could overcome the temptation. A $200 TV or even a $500 item isn’t worth the court battle. “Shoot first, ask questions later” isn’t a good defensive posture no matter where you are. I’m retired military — even we didn’t shoot first unless there was an imminent threat.
This was an unfortunate situation. The guy shouldn’t have fired on the kids who were (most likely) running away, even if they had been trying to break the door in (and failed). He was in no danger. Even being woken up at 3 am he had enough presence of mind to get a firearm. Maybe he was a bit groggy, but most likely just mad at being woken up in the middle of the night. It’s going to be tough to prove he had a reasonable fear of harm in this case. Maybe some teens will learn from the incident, and some adults.
Geez we did a lot worse when we were teens. Anyone recall the “Mexican Bag Trick”? A paper bag filled with dog excrement set on fire on the victims front porch. Ring the door bell and when the homeowner stepped on it to put it out- surprise! Yeah we should have been shot.
Really. Looks like I hit the nail exactly on the head.
The headline could have been written this way:
“black man guns down unarmed White teen”
You can’t kill people just because they’re on your property….unless you live in TX or FL.
What part of criminal harassment and trespassing do you not understand?
you better stay away from carpentry there gd, and another suggestion be very careful about who you attack because someday that will come back and bite you in the ass…….can’t figure out a patriot from a “libtard” you need serious help!
Where were the parents?
Why was a high school age child out at 3 am and not met at the door and beaten with a belt by his parents.
This is just Darwinism thinning the herd of stupid people.
Sue the parents for damages.
Since when is it not at least considered criminal trespassing with criminal harassment. Those POS wanted attention and one of them really got it. Butler should be sentenced to 30 sessions at gun range.
The part that piss me off the most is the 3 perpetrators are not the victims. No question they are the criminals. The two criminal survivors should be prosecuted for murder as their actions caused their accomplices death.
Everything they done is not acceptable. Thinking tic-tok is an educational channel on how to be a dumbass. I have no pity for them. Now they can live the rest of their lives know they contributed the their friends death.

At 3 in the morning being awakened, don’t expect to be totally rational. We have ALL done regretful things half asleep.
100%
Another libtard (conclusion based your actions) thinking verbal harrassment is protected by first amendment.
are you calling me out here???
Really. Looks like I hit the nail exactly on the head.
FAFO
Please stop calling the deceased a “kid” or “juvenile”. You know the difference between right and wrong by your 8th birthday. This adult numb scull was 18. Sounds like playing a stupid game like ‘ding-dong-ditch’ turned into ‘ding-dong-dead’. What makes an 18 year old think he can prank people in the middle of the night by ringing their door bell or beating on their door and NOT realize there’s a really good chance of getting shot?
If someone beats on my door at 3am and wakes me up from a deep sleep the first I’m going to do is grab a gun and the phone to call 911. I’m not going to wait until they breach my door. If I feel threatened because I determine they don’t need help, like a car accident, etc., I’m going to start blast’ng. Shotgun slugs have no problem plowing through a solid wood door.
It’s very sad this young man lost his life over playing a stupid game, which he should posthumously be given the Darwin Award for, but more importantly they destroyed the homeowners life too. Even if he is acquitted, the damage is done and he’ll have to go through life knowing he took another mans life.
Sounds like a classic example of ANOTHER overzealous DA..
Where are the parents of these kids playing Tic Toc pranks at that time of the morning. It is one thing to play games at 9 or 10 Pm at night but 3 am in the morning big difference.
This is truly a tragedy for both families. Teenagers need to know where to draw the line and leave families that they don’t know alone. You don’t have a good reason to to be knocking on doors at 3:00 am. A high school student needs to be in bed at that time not bothering people. People nowadays are on the edge. Law abiding citizens will make a stand if the feel threatened. Again, a tragedy for both families. My heart goes out to both families.
media saying kids prank was ring a door bell and run and hide so you can video record the homeowners reaction.
So 3am, homeowner was able to grab his gun, get to the front door, open, and start shooting at the kids. That prank was either done with the slowest running to hide kids in teh hisotry of the world, OR there are detalis not being shared which would suggest more was done by the pranksters that just ringing the door bell and running to hide.
That is exactly what I was thinking. The timeline makes no sense. The joke takes maybe 2 seconds. We are missing some details.
Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.
I don’t think enough information is out in the public yet to make it informed opinion of what’s happening here. You’re an idiot if you go pounding on someone’s door. at 3 AM in the morning, we don’t know how violent this scenario was. i’ve seen some dingdong videos that would’ve scared the shit out of me and definitely would have fired a gun at the perpetrators. If the door had been broken down on the other side of the coin, did they actually break into the house you can’t shoot through a door without knowing what’s on the other side it’s just not responsible you must be accountable for each round you fire, plain and simple. This man should not have been bothered at 3 AM in the morning, but was he justified in taking another human’s life? This is another example where parenting falls short. Parents must be present in all aspects of their children’s lives being aware of what latest trends are and to give a commentation on it educating your children never ends.

Knocking and banging on a door, to me, don’t constitute deadly force! If they broke a window and starting to reach inside for a door knob or started to climb inside my home, then yup, they got what they deserved. Only use deadly force when deadly force is being pointed at me.
We didn’t call it ding ding ditch .
LOL
We still don’t.
thats what he gets for following tiktok! I don’t think a home owner should have to do a q and a session to determine intent, and how do we know maybe they were planning on breaking in and tiktok just gave them a convenient out
