A Fort Worth homeowner is being hailed as a hero after police say he shot and killed a machete-wielding man who turned on him while allegedly attacking a woman.
According to CBS Texas, the terrifying incident unfolded just after 10 p.m. on Ross Avenue in north Fort Worth last week. Neighbors told police they heard a woman screaming for help as she was dragged down the street by a man armed with a machete.
A nearby Ring camera captured part of the encounter.
Witnesses told CBS Texas they saw the suspect striking the woman with the handle of the machete before a nearby homeowner, identified only as Victor, stepped in to help. Police say the suspect then turned his attention toward the homeowner.
That’s when Victor drew a firearm and opened fire. The suspect died at the scene. Fort Worth police say they do not anticipate filing criminal charges against the homeowner.

The Ring camera footage shows the moments leading up to the shooting, though the actual gunfire occurs outside the camera’s view. Neighbors described hearing the woman’s cries for help before everything unfolded.
One resident praised the homeowner’s actions.
“If there’s a lady in danger… all I can say is he’s a hero,” a neighbor told CBS Texas. “If you see a lady that’s in danger, what would you do?”
Victor’s wife also told CBS Texas her husband acted only to stop the attack and protect the woman after the armed suspect confronted him.
Neighbors said the suspect was well known in the area.
According to several residents, the man had been squatting behind a vacant house nearby and was frequently seen carrying the machete. They also claimed they had repeatedly contacted the City of Fort Worth about problems at the property.

“He’s squatting there. There’s drugs coming in and out of there,” one resident told CBS Texas. “We’ve been telling the City of Fort Worth that he’s a problem.”
Police have not publicly identified either the woman involved or the deceased suspect.
Cases like this underscore just how quickly violent encounters can unfold. In this instance, investigators say a homeowner intervened after witnessing what appeared to be a brutal assault. According to police, when the armed suspect shifted his focus to the homeowner, the situation turned into a clear case of self-defense.
With Fort Worth police saying they do not expect to file charges, the case appears headed toward being ruled a justified defensive shooting.
