GENESEO, ILL. (09/01/22) – Springfield Armory® is proud to announce the launch of the Prodigy™ AOS 9mm pistol, the first offering in the new 1911 DS double-stack line of pistols. The Prodigy, available in both 5” and 4.25” variants, enhances the proven 1911 platform with double-stack capacity and a performance-driven feature set.
Optics-ready with raised fiber-optic front/u-notch rear sights as well as an ambidextrous safety and Picatinny rail, at the heart of the 9mm Prodigy pistol is the expertly engineered double-stack magazine. Mounted to the pistol’s forged steel receiver is a polymer grip module that offers capacities of 17+1 in a flush-fit magazine and 20+1 in an extended one, both included with the Prodigy. An optional 26-round magazine is also available.
The polymer grip module features a wraparound Adaptive Grip Texture treatment, made popular on the Hellcat® family of 9mm pistols. Matching up with this grip module and the forged steel receiver is a forged steel slide with forward serrations. Both it and the steel receiver feature a rugged black Cerakote® finish. Housed within the slide is a match-grade bushingless forged stainless steel bull barrel.
Configured for today’s most demanding applications, the Prodigy is ready to accept a wide range of optical sights. Developed in collaboration with Agency Arms, the Prodigy employs AOS (Agency Optic System) plates designed exclusively for the 1911 DS. Machined from billet 17-4 stainless steel, the AOS plates come fitted with a rear sight and are designed specifically to preserve visible iron sights for an intuitive sight picture and instant target acquisition.

I have the Rock Island double stack in .45. Never a malfunction, tight as a drum, bushing and ramped barrel, parkerized, under $900, oh 14 rounds in a magazine. It’s a beast and runs like a top.
If this new handgun is only half as good as in all of the reviews that I’ve seen so far, Springfield has definitely hit it out of the ballpark with this one.
As far as offering different calibers, I seriously doubt that Springfield would miss an opportunity to expand this offering and offer different calibers, threaded barrels, and since the grip module is polymer and removable, they could even offer different styles with different stippling, improved contours, and even mag wells.
This design is the best of everything, an all metal frame and slide that could handle just about any caliber, and a grip module that can be personalized for just about anyone’s preference.
Great job Springfield!
Ricky said everything that needed to be said on this post. I might buy a 9mm too but there’s only one way it would be a perfect “10.”
Dear Springfield,
Very impressed with the design. Extremely disappointed in the only choice of caliber.
Please offer this chambered for a man sized round. Any man sized round (40sw, 45acp, 10mm). If you do me this favor, I will certainly buy at least one the man sized models. It’s extremely likely though that a few of those bad boys would find their way into my gun safe.
Sincerely,
Ricky
