Oklahoma: Citizens Can Now Point Guns to Defend Property!

Finally, some good news out of a state that actually trusts its citizens. Oklahoma just passed House Bill 2818—and it’s a big upgrade for property defense. Signed by Gov. Stitt on May 15, the bill immediately went into effect thanks to an emergency enactment clause.

What does HB 2818 do? It updates Oklahoma’s firearm statutes to say this loud and clear: if you’re a lawful gun owner, you now have the right to point a firearm not just in defense of yourself or others, but also to defend your property. That includes land you own, rent, or occupy with permission—no concealed carry permit required.

This isn’t about using deadly force recklessly. It’s about allowing law-abiding citizens to send a clear message to criminals: don’t even try it.

Washington Gun Law President William Kirk broke it down best: “This is a FAFO bill. If you’re thinking of committing a crime in Oklahoma, think twice.”

Before this law, pointing a gun—even just as a warning—was only allowed during self-defense involving a person. Now? The law covers your property, too. Whether it’s your home, your business, or your barn—you’ve got the green light to defend it with a visible firearm.

The bill amends felony firearm statutes to make sure that pointing a weapon during a legitimate defensive display is not a criminal act. Even better? You don’t have to wait for something to escalate before showing you’re ready to defend what’s yours. If a reasonable person would believe force is about to be used unlawfully, you’re covered.

There are limits, of course. You can’t provoke someone just to escalate a situation. And you can’t be in the middle of committing a crime yourself. But if you’re a lawful gun owner minding your own business, HB 2818 just gave you more teeth to defend your life, your home, and your rights.

Oklahoma’s move bucks the national trend of gutting gun rights and flips the script. This law is a solid reminder that the right to self-preservation doesn’t stop at your front door.
