Some home projects are weekend repairs. Others are… this. A German DIY gunsmith just dropped the “WristWrecker 5000,” a Frankenstein build that grafts a .50 BMG upper onto a 1911 frame. Yes, you read that right — .50 BMG in a handgun.
The first test fire, posted on YouTube, racked up thousands of views almost instantly. The builder admits he had no idea what to expect. His helmet ended up being a smart choice — in slow-mo you can see the monster recoil slap the face shield.
The video’s comment section blew up. Some called him a madman, others a legend. Kentucky Ballistics fans were tagged, Brandon Herrera’s name came up, and plenty of folks simply asked the obvious: “Bro, is your wrist okay?”
Even the builder WJR laughed it off. “It still hurts to be honest,” he admitted in the comments. The name WristWrecker 5000 wasn’t just for show.
Meet the WristWrecker 5000: a DIY .50 BMG 1911 pistol build from Germany that’s equal parts insane, impractical, and wildly entertaining. (Photo: WJR)
Is this thing practical? Not a chance. Safe? Debatable. Entertaining? Absolutely. Guns like this live in the space between meme and marvel — ridiculous enough to make you question the sanity of the builder, but impressive enough to make you hit replay.
Sometimes the gun world doesn’t need another carry option or precision rifle. Sometimes it just needs a .50 BMG 1911 to remind us that freedom and innovation often look a little unhinged.

VJust by reading the title, every joint from my shoulders down to my finger tips that’s been broken, torn, and/or ripped, now arthritic as heck, all flared up at once!
Those two misfires. Boy, that was just mean. Two butt pucker moments for a click instead of a bang. He wasn’t huffing and puffing that it didn’t go off, that was a “damn, now I have to try again, I want this to be over with, my build and video or not!” LOL
Gotta love gun guys and the innovation they/we all come up with. Painful of not, that was awesome! 👍

Dennis Wright has a song that fits this guy. It’s called; “You’re A Du#&@$s”.

Ultimate bear country gun. Even if you miss, you’ll burn the bears face off with the muzzle blast.

There was an Asian-American guy in San Diego California in the 80s doing this with a 1911-framed .50 BMG. I remember him at the range (sorry, can’t remember which one; this was 40+ years ago) blowing ceiling tiles out of their frames, and setting his shoelaces on fire. He had an accordion-style brake on the muzzle, initially turned horizontally, before everyone complained, and he turned it vertically and we experienced the aforementioned spectacle. I believe he was banned from the indoor range after that.

I remember that guy, I think it was in American Handgunner magazine. I thought he was from Hawaii.

He’s got nads and showed no trigger flinch the first couple pulls. Then I laughed till my eyes watered after it did fire.

No muzzle brake on that thing? What is he NUTS?
RobertSeptember 26, 2025, 11:10 am
What an idiotic idea and a Complete waste of resources. With that being said, I’ll take two please.

That’s just nuts! It would be cool to have as a conversation piece, but I’d never fire it.

I have a Smith & Wesson 500 magnum that I do my own reloading for. I discovered some 700 grain bullets about 15 years ago. Those have so much recoil that one can only handle about 4 or 5 rounds at one session. I cannot even begin to imagine the recoil this gun would have. Someone would have to pay me a LOT of money to test fire it!

The most ludicrous, insane, ridiculously dangerous ‘hand-cannon’ I’ve ever seen … But funny beyond words! You really want to impress me, lets see you do that with a 20mm! 🫨😂

Well that explained the helmet.

If its reasonably priced and by that, I mean 5 grand or a little less, I will buy one. PROMISE. But let’s do a “gen 2” or 3….make sure the not blowing to pieces possibility has been fully addressed. With a nice big muzzle brake too while he’s at it. What a stud not flinching. Total badass!
