Federal Semi-Auto Ban Returns: GOSAFE Act

in News

Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) just dropped a pair of bills that 2A supporters are calling what they really are: a full-court press on gun rights wrapped in government buzzwords.

His Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act and BUMP Act claim to “protect communities,” but if you read between the lines, it’s clear this is about restricting lawful gun ownership—not stopping criminals.

Let’s break it down.

The GOSAFE Act Isn’t “Safe” for the Second Amendment

Under the GOSAFE Act, millions of Americans who legally own semi-automatic firearms—including your basic AR—would suddenly find their rights hanging by a thread. The bill bans the sale, transfer, and manufacture of an ever-growing list of gas-operated semi-autos.

It introduces a capacity cap of 10 rounds and demands “permanently fixed” magazines. If your gun accepts a detachable mag? You’d better hope it’s on their government-approved list—or be ready to hand it in.

What about hunting, self-defense, and sports shooting? Heinrich says you’re still covered—as long as your firearm meets arbitrary “use-based” exemptions and capacity restrictions.

Translation: Politicians get to decide what you need, not you.

A Backdoor Registry and Ban

Heinrich’s bill also takes a swipe at homebuilders and tinkerers. It seeks to criminalize self-assembly and any modifications the feds deem too effective.

And yes, there’s a buy-back plan too—because what better way to tell lawful Americans their gear is too dangerous than by offering them a government check to hand it in?

The BUMP Act: Another Swipe at Gun Owners

The BUMP Act, co-sponsored with Senators Susan Collins and Catherine Cortez Masto, bans bump stocks and anything that increases the rate of fire of a semi-auto gun—even if the part wasn’t originally designed to do that.

It also tacks new firearms onto the National Firearms Act for more regulation and taxation.

Here’s the Problem

This legislation doesn’t go after criminals—it goes after the tool, and more importantly, the people who legally own them.

The same government that’s failed to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and violent repeat offenders is laser-focused on regulating how many rounds your legal rifle can hold.

The Bottom Line on the GOSAFE Act on Bump Act

Senator Heinrich can dress this up however he wants, but the GOSAFE and BUMP Acts are just two more examples of D.C. elites telling you what you’re “allowed” to own while doing nothing to stop criminals who ignore every law already on the books.

It’s not about safety—it’s about control.

All politicians trying to pass bills that violate the US Constitution should hang from the end of a rope.

I’m sick of these assholes infringing upon our rights.

  • Warren April 18, 2025, 9:55 pm

If you follow his chart, he demonstrates his ignorance of firearms. The first question after taking the “yes” branch of gas-operated asks if the firearm is a recoil-operated handgun. If it is recoil operated, then it would have followed the “no” branch to the gas operated question. You’ll also notice in the “specifically exempt” box that all breach loading rifles, shotguns and handguns are exempt. These semiautomatic, gas operated firearms are breach loading firearms. When a senator lacks the basic understanding of a topic, he should refrain from writing a bill about something he doesn’t understand.

And when this law fails to deliver any meaningful reduction in mass shootings, which its authors fully expect, then the NON-gas operated semi-autos will be banned next. Remember folks: with the anti-gun LEFT it’s always a two-step dance with laws designed to disarm us. The first appears “reasonable” and “common sense” – yet simply cannot work because it doesn’t address any real problem using logic and reason – so the next step that would never have been passed originally is introduced. The lesson: never dance with anti-gun politicians. Don’t even listen to the music.

The anti gun people are afraid of guns thats why they really want to ban them. Just like lesbows are afraid of men. It is sad that those folks have to go through life feeling that way. Sadly you can’t fix stupid.

these people are COMMUNIST. we already know no criminal obeys a gun law. so this law only impacts us. and we are not comitting crimes. this an attempt to disarm the people so we cannot oppose the government. because they want us to be harmless peasants who have to do what they say. and crime as it did in England would skyrocket because the criminals would still have their guns. we saw this unfold the the shining star of COMMUNISM that we now call Venezuela. this is exactly what they did there.

  • Richard Wayne April 18, 2025, 5:16 pm

This won’t go anywhere. Stupid anti gun Dems and their hopes and dreams.

    • Douglas Stead April 19, 2025, 9:21 am

You are right, they don’t have the votes, and besides Trump will veto them and they cannot override his veto. These are nothing more than feel-good bills these legislators introduce from time to time to in order to convince their constituency to re-elect them.

Im not going to raise my arms for or against this legislation or other because it will make no difference in violent firearm involved crimes. I’m a FFL gun dealer and we have ATF and local police visits to check our book and discuss new requirements. The firearm situation out there is diare, legislate or not. By average, every American family packing so much fire power it is in the neighborhood of “ridiculous”. The company I work for buy’s estates from closing properties due to the move or a family death. We get called to remove weapons and store them. Sometimes we need to bring a van. The problem here is mentally ill people get hold of anything what shoots and begin terrorizing everyone. My company has a policy never sell any gun on to the street. Don’t advertise and keep a low profile. Washington cant control who’s buying a gun, but they try to control the gun itself. Unfortunately this “train” has long left the station.

More bs from the left. Their isn’t anything in this bill that will stop a bad guy from shooting someone. It only affects the good guys rights. I am beginning to think they only have one track minds on the left and can’t get out of the stuck track they are in. I would love for them to explain to us how this bill will stop a bad guy from shooting someone. The bad guys will not pay any attention to what the left is saying and will continue to do as they wish.

  • Mike April 18, 2025, 1:47 pm

Laws for the citizens that won’t apply to law enforcement or our elected representatives?
    Sounds like tyranny to me!

  • Dur Poiguy April 18, 2025, 1:04 pm

All these democrats efforts to restrict gun ownership by law abiding citizens are unveiled attempts to prepare for full/on Communism! They are so afraid of an armed populace because it prevents their control of the citizens!

  • James S April 18, 2025, 12:57 pm

Call it what you will. But my view is if you want to cut crime, We the People should round up about 100 current politicians, give them a hemp necktie and push them off a tall platform. The rest will get the message and stop doing stupid shit like this. Honest question, what has senator Susan Collins of Maine actually done for the people of Maine and of the United States in 29 years of being a Senator? Thinking, thinking, thinking, OH RIGHT, she voted twice to acquit president Trump after he was impeached by the House of Representatives.

  • Derek Barclay April 18, 2025, 12:22 pm

This GOSAFE Act and BUMP Act will never make it as a law. The Constitution will make sure of that and the case of Marbury vs. Madison, 1803.
The Constitution, article VI paragraph 2, is the Supremacy Clause. Stating that the constitution is the supreme law and any state law that contradicts the constitution in any way, is VOID.
Marbury vs. Madison, 1803, is a case ruled on by the supreme courts chief justice, stating the same. Any law that is in conflict or repugnant, is VOID and not a law.

    • Douglas Stead April 19, 2025, 9:25 am

They already know this, but it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 years before a ruling can be made by the SCOTUS, assuming it gets that far. The SCOTUS gets over 6,000 cases per year and only hears about 150 of them. In the meantime their bills become effective almost immediately in the scheme of things and gun owners become the victims.

  • Robert Tulloch April 18, 2025, 12:14 pm

These weapons of Freedom are necessary to enable the population of our country to defend against traitors, invaders and leftist political scum in General. Charlton Heston said it best our cold dead hands.

  • Strafer April 18, 2025, 11:31 am

I didn’t think a firearm could be both gas-operated and recoil-operated. This guy is a worthless dick and this bill has a snowball’s chance in hell.

  • JOHN DOREY April 18, 2025, 11:12 am

Gun Control Has NEVER been About gun control ………. It’s About Mind Control and Disarming a public and keeping them from standing against the kind Of Despotism we’re seeing Now!
Better Education about the Kinds of Firearms one could CHOOSE and Training in safe use and storage IS THE ANSWER!

  • Dan April 18, 2025, 11:00 am

I guess these gun grabbing elites think the masses will just go along with this ridiculous crap. Looking at the diagram I can see he knows nothing about firearms and therefore should not be writing (unconstitutional) legislation to regulate firearms. If you don’t understand that a smooth bore is not a rifle then you have no business telling us what is safe. It’s a power grab plain and simple, when they should be looking at mental health issues instead. But, that would require them looking at the failed policies that have created the mental health issues in the first place.

  • Old Patriot April 18, 2025, 10:51 am

That abomination would disarm the public, letting criminals run wild with their extended mags and Glock switchesm while effectively disarming the public. Anarchy would be the sole effect.

  • Smitty April 18, 2025, 10:39 am

Not worried, this crap will never happen in this country without a huge revolution which the unarmed cannot possibly win. We need to enjoy at least the next 4 years of American freedom with a cautious outlook thereafter.

  • Jake April 18, 2025, 10:18 am

All I see for the most part is low IQ punks with Glocks with extended mags and these illegal selector switch gizmos. Last year a bunch of 8th grade grads in Chicago took a group picture and these kids were all duded up in suits and each was holding up a Glock with an extended mag. Anarchy tyranny always uses criminals to terrorize people into giving up or doing what the oppressors really want. Take away gas operated rifles because they ALLOW criminals to have these pistol/machineguns which of course are recoil operated. Fixed magazines? Is the FN 49 or Hakim or Ljundgren or SKS considered fixed , or would even a nondetachable but removable mag be banned?
There is no trustable “good intention” here. In the 50’s, a Brit could buy a selective fire FN FAL. Then they were later forced to convert them to semi-auto. Then they were required to turn them in unless they cut out part of the receiver to make it a wall hanger. Now, an honest citizen in Britain can’t buy a butcher knife. Yet, there crime is through the roof and only native Brits are prosecuted for anything up to and including self defense.. ANARCHO TYRANNY is all this is.

    • paul I'll call you what I want/1st Amendment April 18, 2025, 12:25 pm

hey i own a glock and have a low iq no extended mags or switches though……

      • Douglas Stead April 19, 2025, 9:27 am

I agree with the low IQ comment. Very true!

        • paul I'll call you what I want/1st Amendment April 19, 2025, 11:27 am

not believing the glock part then?

  • Michael April 18, 2025, 10:08 am

Stillborn- This is much to-do about nothing. But this does not mean these lunatics will stop trying.

He can kiss our ass we’re done with the Dems pulling this stuff. How did he win in NM???

    • MM in Havasu April 18, 2025, 10:45 am

NM is run by democrats, go figure.

  • T-Road April 18, 2025, 9:59 am

Is there any other Constitutional right that is subject to the “need” condition? Example, Why do you need a semi-auto firearm ? Why do you need protection to freely exercise your religion ? Why do you need to be able to exercise freedom of speech ? Why do you need to feel secure in your person, house, papers, and effects ? Why do you need to have a right to protect yourself from self incrimination ? Etc, etc. Yet it is considered “reasonable” to impose restrictions on the type of firearm which one may choose to defend one’s self, family, property, or, Heaven forbid, our country on a condition of “need”. No hypocricity here !

  • paul I'll call you what I want/1st Amendment April 18, 2025, 5:20 am

like this will go anywhere and stop people from owning them
