Video: Business Owner Exchanges Gunfire with Suspected Burglars

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

A shootout erupted early Sunday morning in the Meadows of Clear Creek subdivision when a business owner confronted two men attempting to break into his vehicles, reports ABC7 Chicago.

Pablo Covarrubias and his 19-year-old son found themselves under fire, but Covarrubias quickly defended his family, returning shots at the suspects.

Covarrubias was woken up around 1 a.m. by his son, who spotted the would-be burglars trying to break into their work vehicles, both of which contained valuable equipment for Covarrubias’ HVAC business.

“There was no time to react,” Covarrubias said, describing how he grabbed his pistol from beside his bed and headed outside. Before he could get a word in, the suspects opened fire.

Bullets flew in the residential neighborhood, with one striking a jack-o’-lantern outside the home. Covarrubias fired back at the suspects, who fled in what he believes may have been a black BMW. It’s unclear whether any of his shots hit the suspects, who remain at large.

“My son’s out here, you start shooting at me… obviously, that’s when things go off in your head, and you’re like, hey, I have to respond,” Covarrubias explained.

The Precinct Two Constable’s Office has confirmed that Covarrubias was within his rights to protect his property.

However, they urged caution, warning that homeowners should be mindful when confronting intruders.

“We don’t know what they’re carrying. We don’t know their mindset,” a spokesperson told ABC 7 Chicago.

Covarrubias hopes that the encounter will give the suspects second thoughts if they ever consider returning. “I think next time they’ll think twice,” he said.

The suspects remain unidentified as authorities continue their investigation.
