Metro police are investigating a deadly home invasion shooting in southeast Las Vegas, after a homeowner reported a break-in that escalated into a physical confrontation and gunfire.

According to Fox 5 News, police were called to the area near Maryland Parkway and Hacienda Avenue shortly before 11:00 a.m. after a homeowner reported that someone had broken into his residence. Officers say a fight occurred inside the home, during which the homeowner shot the alleged intruder.

The intruder, described by police as a man in his 40s, was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police confirmed that the homeowner has been cooperative and is working with investigators as they sort through the circumstances surrounding the shooting. At this stage, authorities have not announced any charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Neighbors in the area expressed mixed reactions as news of the incident spread throughout the afternoon.

One woman who recently moved into the neighborhood told a Fox 5 reporter the shooting reinforced concerns she’s had since relocating to the area with her teenage daughter. She described frequent police activity, helicopters, and emergency responses as common sights, saying the incident wasn’t entirely surprising given what she’s observed since April.

“There are constant helicopters, police, ambulance activity,” she said, adding that drug activity and violence appear to be ongoing issues in the neighborhood.

Another longtime resident offered a different perspective, telling reporters she was shocked by the incident and doesn’t normally see violent crime of this nature in the area. She said the shooting felt like a setback for a community that has been trying to improve safety and stability.

Police are still working to determine key details, including whether the homeowner and the intruder knew each other and what exactly led to the physical altercation before the shooting.

As with many home-defense cases, the facts will matter. Nevada law allows homeowners to defend themselves under specific circumstances, but investigators must determine whether the use of force was legally justified based on the threat faced at the moment the trigger was pulled.

For now, authorities have emphasized that the investigation is active and that no conclusions have been reached.

Incidents like this often generate immediate reactions, but they also serve as reminders for gun owners: self-defense law hinges on immediacy, threat, and proportionality. Not assumptions made after the fact.

Police say more information will be released as the investigation continues.
