After a long wait the Springfield Armory is putting their take on the micro 1911 with the new 911 series. These pocketable single-stack pistols are excellent pistols that are as easy to shoot as they are to carry.

Chambered for .380 ACP, the 911 looks and handles like a 1911, just scaled down to the small cartridge. The 911 draws from the same lines and contours of Springfield’s other new pistols which gives them a slick, modern look.

It’s not just looks with the new series. Working with Hogue Springfield developed a new type of trigger shoe for a crisper and lighter trigger pull. Made from G-10 the trigger shoe delivers a predictable 5-pound break and short, light reset.

In addition these guns have tactile loaded chamber indicators and large external extractors.

Otherwise the controls are standard for modern single-action pistols. The design incorporates extended ambidextrous frame-mounted thumb safeties and a short curved trigger. Like other micro 1911s these guns don’t have a grip safety. Instead the frame is checkered front and back for a positive grip under any conditions.

The company is launching the 911 series with two models, a black model with a matte nitride finish on the slide and barrel and a two-tone model with a satin stainless slide assembly. Both have black hard-anodized aluminum frames.

And both versions come with Hogue G-10 grips. The black model’s grips have olive green highlights while the two-tone grips have silver highlights to match the slide.

The combination of design and materials really delivers. Unloaded, each guns weighs just 12.6 ounces, with a magazine. Rounding out the specs 911 pistols measure in at 5.5 inches long with a 2.7-inch barrel. They are just 4 inches tall with the flush magazine in place.

The slide and barrel are machined from 416 stainless steel while the frames are 7075-T6 alloy aluminum. The magazines are also stainless steel.

Every pistol ships with two magazines, one flush 6-round mag and an extended 7-rounder. They also all come with premium Ameriglo Pro-Glo tritium night sights. Pro-Glo sights are tactical 3-dot sights with a large yellow front sight and 2-dot rear U-notch sight.

With a suggested price of only $599 the 911 series is going to get plenty of attention. The concealed-carry market is hotter than ever and the 911 brings a lot of features to the table for that low price.

Down the line, Springfield will update these models with laser-equipped options. Springfield is working with Viridian to offer them packaged with green laser sights to boot.

Kudos to Springfield for giving us anoher metal frame carry gun opion. Metal being the operative term here.

I see this gun filling a sub-niche by virtue of its slimmer profile (than the Sig and Kimber 380s). Plus, the similarities to the 1911 make it a winner to us diehards who love Mr. Browning’s design.

In this age of swarms of little plastic guns, I am heartened by Springfield’s commitment to giving us new options for competent metal guns.

I like the look but I have one problem with it.
    Only one safety!
Why not two just like the bigger 1911?
I have an AMT Backup in 380 with two safeties that I carry with one in the chamber and would not trade it for anything on the market today.

So, another company besides SIG Sauer has decided to copy the Colt Mustang. That is not a surprise as many companies now thrive on copied Colt products. What does surprise me is that no mention is made of the Mustang in the article.

Somebody already makes one in .380, and ,22lr, so I guess it’s their turn to remake an original?

  • Godfrey Daniel January 5, 2018, 2:40 pm

Sorry, but I just don’t get the .380, never have, never will.

I didn’t get the 380 either. But, with today “NEW” kind of Ammo in 380 and 9 MM. you can get 380 ammo with plenty of stopping power with Higher Velocity and GREAT Expansion. The “OLDER” Type of Ammo couldn’t give Expansion and Penetration like the Stuff today.

At close range I wouldn’t like to get hit with 3-5 rounds of 380 Ammo. And I really wouldn’t like to get hit by 1-2 rounds.

I don’t like it. But, I do GET the 380.

Nice, but I would like to have more gun companies making the .32ACP auto. I Know that it is widely spread that the .32 is not the choice of most big caliber people. Most every person that has tried my 1903 Colt Pocket in .32 has scored well and enjoyed the shooting experience. I might add that the newly manufactured ammo is not the ammo of the past,it is much more effective in this caliber. Most younger and the ladies preferred it over the 9mm,.38 special and also the .380. All of these mentioned are high quality handguns. Last comment. It is better to hit with a small caliber that you can control than to miss with a larger one that the gun writers and gun salesman prefer.

My ten year old daughter was just fine with double taps using the Springfield 1911 9mm Range Officer.

True…and just think…another small pistol meant to be used as a backup and it carries what? Five rounds, maybe six? If I need a backup in a small caliber how about giving me a reliable pistol with at least fifteen rounds!!
