A homeowner in Phoenix, South Africa fatally shot a knife-wielding suspect earlier this month.
While the March 14th incident is still under investigation, local police report that the 60-year-old homeowner claims that he found an unknown individual on his property in possession of copper pipes.
When the homeowner approached the intruder, “the suspect became violent and stabbed him.”
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that the victim then used his firearm and “allegedly shot the suspect, who died at the scene.”
According to Gareth Naidoo, a spokesperson for KZN VIP Protection Services, the individual with the knife was “a robbery and theft suspect from Brentwood in Phoenix” who was fleeing from community members who were chasing him.
While running away, the suspect entered the homeowner’s yard and attacked the victim.
The homeowner sustained a stab wound to one of his arms during the altercation. IOL News reports that this is when the intruder was shot. He was declared dead by medics shortly after.
The homeowner was treated by KZN VIP medics at the scene. He was then transported to a medical facility for further treatment due to excessive bleeding.
Naidoo expressed his wishes for the victim’s speedy recovery.
