In a recent sit-down with Don Lemon, neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris didn’t just talk about media, democracy, or polarization. He went straight at gun culture.
Harris described America’s political environment as a “hallucination machine,” arguing that large segments of the country no longer share the same basic facts. But when the conversation turned to the Second Amendment, things got sharper.
Referring to a recent controversial shooting involving federal law enforcement (Pretti shooting), Harris said what stunned him wasn’t just the incident. But what he sees as silence from gun culture.

“We have millions… for whom the Second Amendment is just the central plank of their political religion,” Harris said. “When you ask proper gun nuts why they have guns… it’s always a story about the need to protect yourself against a government that grows tyrannical.”
Then he posed the implicit challenge.
If armed citizens often say the Second Amendment exists as a safeguard against federal overreach, Harris asked, where is that energy now?
He argued that had similar actions occurred under a left-leaning administration, the reaction from gun owners would likely have been explosive, possibly even involving armed protests.
“If this had occurred under the Biden administration or a Kamala Harris administration — or say nothing of a Barack Obama administration — I mean, you would see something like an insurrection,” he argued. “At a minimum, you would see every deployment of ICE and Border Patrol shadowed by hundreds of guys carrying AR-15s in protest, right?”
“There’s no way gun culture would have taken this from a left-leaning administration,” Harris said. “It’s unthinkable — unless they’re all total hypocrites.”

He also criticized what he sees as hyper-partisan blind spots, saying Americans routinely excuse behavior from “their side” that they would condemn from political opponents.
The broader point, according to Harris, isn’t just about guns. It’s about integrity and consistency. If the Second Amendment is truly about checking government power, he suggests, that principle should apply regardless of who occupies the White House.
Of course, many in the 2A community would push back hard.
Some would argue Harris misunderstands both gun culture and constitutionalism. Others would say selective media framing, legal nuances, and facts surrounding specific incidents matter more than sweeping philosophical takes. And still others might argue that the Second Amendment isn’t a blank check for confrontation but a safeguard grounded in law, federalism, and due process.
So here’s the question for readers:
Does Sam Harris have a point about selective outrage and partisan blind spots within gun culture? Or is he flattening a complex issue into a political talking point?

Pretti did what no self respecting gun nut would do, put himself between LE and their lawful official duties .What he fails to understand, we do not see the ICE actions as overreach.

I think the man may have a valid point. Pretti was legally carrying a licensed concealed weapon which was apparently removed from his person after being pepper sprayed and compliant then was shot. All of us CCW holders should be outraged about this but the reaction from the 2A community has been minimal as far as I can tell. I think there is a certain amount of unwillingness among 2A supporters to go against Trump. So you have to ask your self just what exactly has the Trump administration done to help the Second Amendment? Got rid of the tax stamp? OK that’s good but he should meet with gun groups and get their input. National CCW reciprocity should be a number one priority. Being able to carry anywhere in the US is huge. Sound suppressors should be sold without all the current regulations. There are many things Trump could do to help the 2A community with the stroke of the pen but has not done so. Before you go calling me a ” left wing liberal commie agitator” let me tell you I am a 25 year member of the NRA and 3 year member of the Second Amendment Foundation and have been a Cowboy Action Shooter for 13 years. If you are a Trump supporter great urge him to start being proactive with the 2A agenda.
MN state law, and most other states, very clearly articulate you may not carry in the commission of a crime, it then becomes unlawful carry. He very specifically interfered/w law enforcement which is a crime. No reasonable gun nut who was paying attention in the CCW class would carry if he thought he was going to have contact with LE in this manner. ICE did not come after Pretti, Pretti came after ICE. The fact that he was shot after he was disarmed is immaterial to me.
There is no point here Sam Harris. He has no understanding of gun culture.
FYI, 11 days before Pretti was shot, he had contact with DHS, screamed at them, called them cowards and begged them to shoot him, then kicked out a taillight on on a Gov’t SUV.

I for one am voicing my opinion in that the Pretti shooting was unjustified. It was a rookie on the trigger who didn’t have enough OJT or experience and the guy who screamed out “gun” is just as much of a rookie and may have led to the shooting. When someone yells gun, that denotes to me with my training that it’s being pulled not that someone has one. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe my training was wrong but I don’t think so. A lot of those guys on duty don’t have the training to be there and some of the train was even cut short by hours and even days.

There’s a video, and I’d link it but if you want to see it l, go look for it, but it’s from Langley Outdoors Academy, and it’s titled something like, what we know happened or what we know so far or the truth about what happened. I can’t remember. I’ll find and link it if you ask though.
Anyhow, it’s multiple videos put together from different angles.
And what happened was a bunch of events that just happened to all line up resulting in what happened.
But it would have never happened if Pretti would have acted responsible! He had and we have every right to carry at a protest. But we also have a duty to be and act responsible when doing so! And getting in the face of federal agents IS NOT being or acting responsible! Go watch the videos of his first encounter with ICE! You know, the one where he cussed at them, spit on them and kicked the tail light out of their vehicle! The way I see it, a leopard doesn’t change its spots and I’m sure he was doing the same damn things this time!
But I’ve yet to see any video/s of anything before a few minutes before what happened! Which I find strange.
Anyhow, and sorry this is long. He was taken down and a gun was discovered. At which point training and protocol dictates the procedure to yell GUN! GUN! GUN! So all officers and agents near and far hear a gun is present in an active tactical operation. Or otherwise!
What that does and what procedure, protocol and training then dictates is the drawing of their weapons!
And both of what I just said we hear and see in that video I mentioned!
Then one agent retrieves the firearm from the “offender” and at this point, as far as I’m concerned anyways, he is. But at this point, this is again, where procedure, protocol and training dictates the yelling of gun recovered. So all officers and or agents near and far away can hear. But again, with all the yelling and protests chaos and months of anti-ICE bull crap, maybe they might have been a little too much on edge? But then that’s on democrats for not allowing locals to sassy in at least crowd control!
Now here we have to wonder with both the yelling of gun, gun, gun and gun recovered, if all agents, with all the telling and chaos from protestors, if all agents heard either or both? Again, I’m sure they were all pretty amped up. Again, especially the ICE agents after months of this bull shit!
Anyways, the guns recovered and the agent is seen leaving the pile with it. What also appears to be seen is either the magazine fell out or was dropped by the agent after he removed it or he dropped it upon removal of it? In that video I mentioned, this can be seen. Among other things.
So if that’s the magazine that fell or was dropped, and it appears to be, to me anyhow, that means only the round in the chamber was left in the recovered firearm. AND SOMEHOW THAT’S WHAT WENT OFF WHICH WAS WHAT TRIGGERED THE SHOTS FROM THE AGENTS WHO REACTED TO THE SHOT.
You can even see, in that video I mentioned, where one agent appears to be trying to jump up and out of the way to avoid being hit. Again, seen in the video and what it looked like to me.
In the end, it comes down to this! As gun owners who conceal carry a firearm, we have a duty to be responsible! And Pretti wasn’t being responsible! Let alone respectful!

See what I’m getting and what the investigation revolves around is that that was shot was fired after the weapon was taken away from Pretti. It seems like the officer accidentally discharged the weapon or possibly it went off when he set it down or threw it down… The camera reviews I’ve seen don’t show it close enough to how hard the weapon hit when it was put down. I will continue to look for the video you are referencing but right now all things point to an unjust shooting.

You fathom very little on this forum.
It’s very difficult to try and decipher your question fully since you are basically illiterate but I will give it a try.
1. A cartridge case is the container that holds the gun powder.
2. A bullet is a projectile fired out of a weapon and the term bullet is not interchangeable with the term cartridge case although both in combination are part of the loaded cartridge.
3. A chamber and barrel are not modified in order to fire a cartridge originally of a different caliber that was modified to conform to the weapon’s original chambered cartridge. Put simply a 45/70 cartridge case is run into a case forming die to convert it to 8x52mmR Siamese Mauser. There are many other steps involved in the complete case forming process too numerous to go into here. Some of the steps include trimming down of the overall length of the case, reaming out of the neck or substituting an outside turning of the neck, annealing of the neck, turning down the rim of the 45/70 case to 8x52R dimensions and putting a back bevel on the rim.

With the demise of the NFA tax, the new hotness is suppressors, SBRs and SBSs. The extremely short lived militia movement is as dead as fair play. Mr. Harris seems to be wishcasting to make a point. There is actual insurrection, or at least widespread nullification of Federal law, driven by the political left in America right now. Yeah Right… Firearms supporters would have supported Harris/Biden/OBama roundups. In fact OBama was the previous “Deporter in Chief”. Biden finally at the end if his administration was starting to round up illegals when he was looking at low poll numbers. Harris would not have done anything. Trump is going after illegals, Biden was going after law abiding protestors. Pretti and Good and others were not law abiding protestors.
