A Portland Republican is thinking about using militia groups as security personnel to protect his fellow GOP members following a recent, racially-motivated stabbing inside a rail train last Friday.
Multnomah County GOP chair James Buchal said in an interview with The Guardian that Republicans shouldn’t be cowed out of the public square because tensions are at a high.
“I am sort of evolving to the point where I think that it is appropriate for Republicans to continue to go out there,” he said. “And if they need to have a security force protecting them, that’s an appropriate thing too.”
Specifically, Buchal mentioned groups like the “Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.”
“Yeah. We’re thinking about that. Because there are now belligerent, unstable people who are convinced that Republicans are like Nazis,” said Buchal.
The man responsible for the stabbing is 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian, an alleged white supremacist. Christian killed two men and wounded another after all three confronted Christian who was yelling racial and religious epithets at two young women on the train.
Buchal seems to believe that the far left will blame Republicans for the acts of the knife-wielding Christian.
Rose City Antifa, a Portland-based antiracist group, criticized Buchal’s idea.
“That the GOP need[s] to bring in private armed security rather than rely on Portland Police speaks volumes on their stance against ‘violence’,” said the group in a statement.
“These private security elements of the extreme right claim to be supporting ‘free speech’ when in reality their main goal is directing violence and hate speech towards antifascist protesters and activists while protecting white supremacists,” it continued.
There’s nothing wrong with private security. Of course, when that security has an overt political agenda, that’s where things get a little dicey. But there’s another issue in play, at least within the city, and that is certification.
“It’s a complex issue,” said Portland police bureau spokesman, Sergeant Peter Simpson. “Private security in Oregon needs to be certified by the state. That said, people showing up to assist do not. We don’t advocate bringing in outsiders to police an event.”
Anyways, what are your thoughts? Should Portland Republicans use Oath Keepers and Three Percenters fro armed security? Should they just rely on the local police for protection?
Just reading the flow of this exchange is why,… I’m heavily armed, well stocked and ready for the collision that I think is inevitable within the next 4 to 8 years. Stay fit and RIFLE UP.
Perhaps we would do well in this type of situation to consider laws and rights which are cornerstones of what makes the U.S.A. a great nation. As an example, take a look at the full text of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
I suggest that the Second Amendment encompasses more than the natural right of the people to keep and bear arms against a tyrannical government. This Amendment also recognizes the reality that a militia is necessary to ensure the security of our freedom. The Amendment does not define or limit what constitutes a “well regulated” militia. It does not deny the fact that a “State” is made up of its component parts. It does not require that the situation giving rise to a need for security be restricted to a national crisis which requires a nationwide militia.
Therefore, I submit that the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America allows the use of a small militia to protect the security of some portion of the country in a situation limited in scope to events taking place in that particular portion of the country.
Accordingly, the Second Amendment allows the use of a militia to provide security in the situation which is presented here. If someone doesn’t like or approve of this Constitutionally protected right, that person can work to try to amend the Constitution. In the meantime, the Constitution is the law of the land, and the rights it protects shall not be infringed.
Don’t forget Article 1, Section 8, which has the paragraph:
To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;
That plainly states the federal governments responsibility to pay for the Militia’s arms, whether they are “employed in the Service of the United States” or not. I imagine there is also some dusty old law prescribing the discipline of training.

Militias have been a part of America since the beginning. Militias are made up of citizens who choose to help maintain the peace. They are totally legal and should be employed more with the number of radical, mindless, idiots causing serious problems around the country. Also, all law-abiding citizens should carry all the time. It makes society much safer and more friendly.
I doubt that there enough Oath Keepers and 3 Percenters in Portland to have much of an impact on this problem.
First you (Buchal) select a political party and everyone knows that there will always have conflicting views with the other political parties and if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen . If you want more security than the local police are providing then take out of your check book out of your pocket pay for it. If your political position is one that is honest and working for the people then why are you afraid to be in public. This attack was not directed at a political group, it was directed at an ethnic group which all of us in America should be against and unfortunately 2 out of 3 men died standing against that hate.

I don’t have any trouble with people having security if they feel they are in danger. However, both the Oathkeepers and the 3% are anti-government hate groups. They are not sanctioned and trained security groups, they are terrorists.

I am a retired US Army non-commission officer, war veteran, VFW life member and NRA life member. I am also a member of The Oath Keepers and damn proud of it! I know the founder of Oath Keepers (Stewart Rhoads) personally, We are good and decent people, unlike the candy-ass snowflake ANTIFA who go around and attacking innocent unarmed folks who just want to live their lives in peace. When bystanders intervene, he without provocation he stabs two of them to death, and seriously wounds a third. Because of this a minor Republican county official tweets that he is afraid for his safety because Democrats might blame Republicans, and as a consequence, without any evidence this is true, is considering asking far right armed groups for protection. And someone thinks this is a potentially reasonable idea?

It’s bad enough that Christian came out and tried to kill the 2 ladies, and instead wound up killing the 2 guy’s who stood up and got killed, and the 3rd who almost got killed, screaming at the top of his lung’s that anybody not born here deserved to die. Seeing how the law “enforcement” in the Portland area dealt with the post election temper tantrums I don’t blame anyone there, either side of the aisle, for not trusting the police to do their jobs. If the police don’t want private organizations/private citizens doing their jobs then maybe the police need to step up and get to work.
