Phoenix police are trying to piece together a chaotic chain of events that ended with two people dead, including a suspected shooter who was run down by a passing motorist.
The incident unfolded late Friday night near 7th Avenue and I-17 and detectives say the full picture is still far from clear, per AZFamily.com.
According to investigators, two motorcycle riders were stopped at a red light just before 11 p.m. For reasons police haven’t yet determined, one rider suddenly shot the other.
As the victim collapsed, a driver nearby reportedly witnessed the gunfire. And that’s when this already wild story swerved into something even stranger.
Police say the driver accelerated and struck the suspected shooter with his vehicle at full speed, launching him roughly 100 feet.
A bystander’s video, which reporters are still trying to obtain clearance to use (see X post below), shows the moment of impact as the shooter is thrown into a nearby area.

Homicide detectives, officers, and cleanup crews spent the next 18 hours on scene sorting out what happened. Roads in the area didn’t reopen until just before 5 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities say they’re still relying heavily on witnesses and surrounding businesses, including a convenience store whose security camera pointed directly at the intersection to fill in critical gaps.
So far, police have not announced any charges against the driver who struck and killed the suspected shooter. And they haven’t said how or if he identified the gunman in the split second between hearing shots and flooring the accelerator.
That unanswered question is shaping much of the conversation around the case:
How did the motorist know who the “bad guy” was? Police haven’t offered an explanation yet, and with detectives still combing through video and witness accounts, it may take time before the public gets clarity.
For now, the only confirmed details are stark:
- One motorcyclist shot another at a stoplight.
- A driver saw gunfire, hit the suspected shooter with his car, and caused life-threatening injuries.
- Police say the shooter died from being struck.
- The original shooting victim also died.
Phoenix PD says more information will be released as the investigation develops. As always, stay tuned for updates.
