Hornady has continued to dominate the market in ammunition this year, always surprising with incredibly accurate factory loadings. I personally have been very impressed with the 6.5 Creedmoor loadings, including the American Gunner line. New for this year, Hornady has several new options.

Precision 6.5 PRC

First up is the new 6.5 PRC round. Billed as the bigger brother to the 6.5 Creedmoor, this offers all the same high coefficient bullets, with a bit more umph. This new round is akin to a short action magnum, pushing the same bullets up to 260 fps faster. This is taking the 6.5 to a bit of a specialized gun, but it is going to be a winner. If you hunt with 6.5, this offers just a little bit more go for a small trade-off in recoil.

Going Quiet

After the super fast, Hornady switches gear to slow. Namely, subsonic. Hornady has made mountains of 300AAC, both super and subsonic. What has been missing is a subsonic expanding round. That has now been fixed. The new SUB X will expand reliably down to 900 fps, giving a range of about 250 yards. This is going to be a big hit amongst the hunting crowd, and we can count on this to take some pigs over the coming days.

Critical Defense

Last but certainly not least, a new line of Critical Duty ammunition for rifles. Rifles are gaining more and more acceptance as a self-defense tool, so Hornady has stepped in to fill a gap. Rifle bullets are generally made to shoot a long way and open up slowly for larger game. With a defensive round, we want the opposite. Human beings aren’t that thick ( most days), so we want expansion early. This not only creates the best wound channel, it decreases the risk of overpenetration. That is exactly what Critical Defense was created to do. Look for this on store shelves now, and get testing from us in the near future.
