Media Bias Hides the Real Story Behind Mass Shootings

in News

In a conversation with Steve Bannon on America’s Voice, Dr. John Lott said the latest mass shooting in Minneapolis reveals more about media bias and failed policies than about firearms themselves.

Gun-Free Zones as Targets

According to Lott, the shooter’s manifesto explicitly stated he chose the school because it was a gun-free zone. Lott argued that this detail is consistently omitted from mainstream coverage.

“Time after time, diaries and manifestos explain why they pick their targets,” he said. “They want to go to a place where victims can’t defend themselves. But you’ll never see the media admit that.”

Lott pointed to a long list of killers — from Columbine to Buffalo to Nashville — who deliberately selected “soft targets.”

His view is that these criminals aren’t stupid; they know more unarmed victims means more carnage, and more carnage means more headlines.

Mental Health Failures

Lott also underscored the role of mental health, noting that over half of mass shooters in the last 25 years were already seeing professionals — yet not one was flagged as a danger.

He cited examples where killers easily deceived psychiatrists by denying violent intentions, a systemic failure that allowed them to slip through.

Like the Buffalo shooter, who told a teacher he planned to shoot up a summer school, but when referred to psychiatrists, “He told them, ‘Look, it was a stupid joke. I shouldn’t have said it. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.’ And the mental health care professionals basically just took him at his word.”

Lott’s point: the system often relies on self-reporting, allowing would-be killers to conceal their intentions.

Armed Defense as Deterrent

Lott argued the solution isn’t disarming the public, but allowing trained staff to carry concealed firearms in schools.

He pointed out that more than 10,000 schools nationwide already allow armed teachers or staff — and, according to his research, none of those schools has experienced a deadly attack.

Uniformed officers, he warned, are too obvious a target.

“If they’re going to attack, who do you think they take out first? … One way to think about this is we have air marshals on planes. Does anybody think air marshals ought to be in uniform?”

Media Misdirection

Lott also accused the press of manipulating coverage to support gun control, whether by downplaying manifestos, misreporting firearms used, or framing events as “white supremacy” regardless of motive.

“My guess is the whole gun control debate that we have right now would be dramatically different if even once in a while the media would say why they picked the target — because they wanted to go to a soft target where they knew their victims couldn’t defend themselves,” he explained.

He said editors have told him including such details would be “political,” yet they regularly highlight the firearms used or speculate on how they were obtained.

“Saying that they picked a place where people were banned from having guns — is that more or less political than you going and calling it an ‘assault weapon’?” Lott asked.

The Bottom Line

For Lott, the lesson is clear: gun-free zones invite mass killers, media bias fuels bad policy, and disarming law-abiding citizens won’t stop the next tragedy.

Instead, he says deterrence through armed defense, honesty about mental health failures, and a press willing to report uncomfortable facts are the real paths to safety.

Speaking of mental health, how does one gauge the mental health of any individual who feels so uncomfortable in their own skin that they would pursue changing their sexual identity, their appearance, and their entire configuration by pharmaceutical drugs and surgery to the extent that their previous self is unrecognizable?
First the politicians sold us on gay rights, then gay marriage, and then transgender rights. Is it difficult to recognize the progression of progressive politics? What will be progressively next?
At 68 years old, when I was growing up, there were always some kids who were just different. But those different kids didn’t bring guns to school to harm their schoolmates. What changed in our society to even make this a possible choice? I believe that mental health of school children has been influenced by the osmosis of popular culture movies and by violent video games effecting our nation’s youth aside from a lack of parental supervision and parental responsibility. But also, back when I was growing up our national politicians were much less focused on interfering with the dynamics of family life and the family unit as a whole. Journalists like Walter Chronkite simply reported the news. And, by doing so, they carefully furnished us with the facts, allowing us to arrive at our own conclusions. Today, the media mixes covering the news with telling us what to believe and to think by a series of narratives. What is missing is the reporting.
What seems to be at stake in our society is our free will, and our ability to make conscious decisions for ourselves and for our family without political and government interference. Like no more Hunter Safety Classes taught in Junior Middle School but teaching our youth the acceptable non-binary pronouns for those different kids.
Something else, if legal gun owners are in the majority then why are the politicians attempting to take away our 2A Rights while conversely, LBGTQ+ is in the minority, but why are the politicians cramming gay and Trans rights down our throats?
Does anyone still trust the Democrat Party with their future?

When America had lots of newspapers in towns and cities across America we were a more diversified nation. As the various newspapers were bought out and merged, the result was a consolidation of points of view and political ideals. Clearly, having the media controlled by only a few conglomerates is not healthy for America. The apparent spectrum of our available choices, content, and our civil rights has unfortuneately narrowed greatly. And, instead of reporting the facts and the truth, media sources are for some reason reporting their pet narratives even when the facts and the truth are readily available. Why? If transparency is the buzzword and the rage, then why aren’t we the beneficiaries?
What the politicians and the press are failing to bring to light is the subject of mental illness and substance abuse. Sane and sober individuals are not killing Americans in schools, bars and restaurants, hospitals, office buildings, businesses, and political gatherings. Mental health professionals should be held to a higher standard in treating their patients while also keeping society safe. Big Pharma should be further examined for their role in suicidal and violent behaviors for those individuals taking their drugs.
Knee-jerk politicians always want to confiscate guns after tragic shootings like Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Nancy Pelosi was just on the noon news speaking out about the dangers of guns and political violence. But after a deranged illegal immigrant from Canada tried to kill her husband with a hammer at their San Francisco home, why did she not lobby to outlaw hammers and other ominous and threatening hand tools? As a retired union carpenter, I have over a dozen hammers for different purpises, to me, they are tools. Or, after the 23 year old Ukrainian immigrant was returning to home after work on a New Jersey subway was stabbed to death in the neck by a schizophrenic repeat criminal, why weren’t politicians lobbying to confiscate knives? As a retired tradesman and as a former hunter, I have dozens of knives of different configurations that are tools by necessity.
Expect another assault on our 2A rights after Tyler Robinson shot and killed Charlie Kirk with an antique Mauser rifle rechambered for 30-06. The Speaker of the House, Johnson, was also on the noon news today looking quite concerned about further protections and safety measures for politicians in the light of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
From the cryptic symbols scribed onto the cartridges inside the magazine of Tyler Robinson’s Mauser rifle, he also may contain serious mental health deficiencies.
How do the majority of Americans retain our Constitutional civil rights and our freedoms when deranged, extreme, and mentally unfit individual individuals are trespassing on our civil rights?
