Attention all hunters!
As the hunting season approaches, your trusty four-legged pals need more than just enthusiasm. From health check-ups to safety gear, ensuring your dog’s well-being can make all the difference.
With this in mind, we’re highlighting a story from KFYR-TV in Bismarck, ND. The local news affiliate spoke to Brookelle Bartsch, a veterinarian, about some of the preps to make before heading out into the field with your best bud.

“We see tons of injuries, especially in that first week of hunting season. So I always warn owners, just encourage owners to start exercising them now if they have not already,” said Dr. Bartsch.
“So just like us, it’s hard to get up and then go run a marathon, kind of prepare them for that,” she added. With that said, here are five hunting dog safety tips.
Hunting Dog Safety Tips
- Tick-borne Disease Prevention: Before hunting season kicks off, contact your vet clinic. Timely vaccinations can ward off diseases, such as rabies. Also, you can get protection against tick-related threats.
- Fitness First: Injuries often spike in the initial hunting week, as Dr. Bartsch mentioned. Begin exercising your dogs now! Think of it as marathon training for your fur buddy!
- Hydrate Right: Always carry extra water during hunts. Keep dogs from drinking potentially harmful, blue-algae-contaminated waters.
- Safety Wear: Style meets safety! Deck out your dogs in bright orange and reflectors. It’s both trendy and essential for visibility.
- Emergency Prep: Having a first-aid kit is non-negotiable. Because accidents happen, and it’s always best to be prepared.
Preparing for hunting season goes beyond cleaning your gear and scouting locations.
It’s about ensuring every member of the team, especially our loyal canines, are safe and ready for the adventures ahead.
Prioritize their well-being, and you’ll guarantee a more successful and enjoyable season for everyone involved. Happy hunting!
