Dems Push to Force Vote on this Bill!

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

This week, Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-07) spearheaded an effort to force a vote on the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order (FERPO) Act.

Joining her were Mike Thompson (CA-04), Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force; Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse (CO-02); Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce; and Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02).

McBath introduced a discharge petition for bill H.R.3018, aiming to mandate a House vote on this controversial, gun confiscation legislation.

This marks the fourth such effort in the 118th Congress to advance legislation through discharge petitions, following attempts to outlaw so-called “assault weapons” and criminal private transfers.

“Today’s announcement marks the next step in our mission to save as many lives as possible through common-sense policies,” Rep. Lucy McBath said.

“Extreme risk protection orders are already saving lives in Republican and Democratic states, allowing law enforcement and family members to intervene before it’s too late,” she continued.

“My bill will expand these protections from coast to coast and give every American another tool to keep their communities safe. Our ‘gun-sense’ Democratic Caucus will continue to pursue every legislative solution we can to save lives,” McBath concluded.

Under House rules, a discharge motion can be made on the Floor and voted on once a petition collects 218 signatures.

If that threshold is reached, the bill would not need support from GOP leadership.

The FERPO Act allows law enforcement and relatives to request a judicial order to confiscate firearms from individuals accused of being a threat to themselves or others.

Currently, 21 states along with the District of Columbia have implemented similar statutes.

This story is developing, stay tuned for updates.

Never ever allow any government agency to take away Americans guns. We are in an exact situation that the founding fathers anticipated for, and that’s to defend ourselves from a tyrannical government, which we have now. We are 1 of the last countries to still have our guns, that’s the biggest reason we are still somewhat free people right now. Once the Democrats and their leaders of the world take our guns, they can start the New World Order! After Trump wins in 24 he needs to declare Marshal Law and clean house in the government!

WE need to have federal legislation on this …why exactly? Seems the states are doing fine on their own (and others have gone to ridiculous extremes) without federal interference.

Red Flag Law should be Outlawed They uncontrollable and very anti American

Thank God Texas hasn’t passed this stupid unconstitutional law.
I’m shocked to see Florida on the list.

The following states passed ERPO into law – California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and, of course, Washington D.C.

Wanting to pass a Federal ERPO is completely unconstitutional. The States should decide their own laws. Not the Federal government. This is another attempt to reduce our rights.

All gun laws at the Federal level need to be struck down. And for all the states that passed ERPO laws, those too need to be repealed as well.

The only common sense that congress has is maybe they can tie their own shoes. If you want to stop gun or any other crime is to punish the ones that commit the crime and if you use a gun or any weapon in the commission of that crime then double the time.

I live in Maine, we use to have the best yellow flag laws in the US. After the shooting in Lewiston, outside Maine democrats sent money to leverage bills to create anti-gun bills. Surprisingly our democratic governor denied a bunch of these anti-gun bills. She did let the red flag bill pass by her not signing it. We went from the best yellow flag law in the US to the worst red flag laws in the US, even worse than all the big anti-gun states. What is even worse, is, all the pieces that were passed had nothing to do with the shooting. Everything they passed would not have stopped the shooter because they did not include medical into the bills.

    2words. Gun confiscation…
It should be up to family members to pay attention to their own for this. Along with everything else we’re supposed to be responsible for in our lives

While I agree that red flag laws have saved SOME people, how many MORE times has it been abused?

(Mandatory carry required for everyone) will stop gun violence, people tend to shoot much less when their target is shooting back.

All (or at least most) mass shootings end when a legal/trained gun ower arrives on scene. Follow the second ammendment as written.

If these things were as “common sense” as they claim, they wouldn’t need to claim it was common sense.
Put due process in those bills and they might get more support, but as it stands, those bills aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.
