Prepping 101: Cheap Night Vision Riflescopes

Prepping 101: Cheap Night Vision Riflescopes

This article is something of a shootout between my favorite (and cheap at $400) night vision scope and an interesting new digital night vision product that was made from a converted IR CCTV camera. In my experience, digital night vision normally isn’t worth the inflated pricetag. I’ve even declined to review the couple “clip on” models that I’ve tried because they were just too expensive for what you get. This product, called Digital Crosshairs, is also a clip on that uses your existing scope. But at only $400-$575, it is at least arguably worth the price.

Shooting History: Colt’s 1903 Pocket Hammerless–Old Gun Review

Shooting History. This is the name of a new series that we will be running here at Guns America. We will take some historic guns, shoot them and review them not too much unlike our new gun reviews. It was seeing the new production Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless at SHOT Show this year that got me to thinking, so, it makes sense to kick it off with an antique 1903.

Prepping 101: Killer Traps

Prepping 101: Killer Traps

Trapping is always a very sensitive subject. What is the purpose of a trap, whether for a man or animal? I think mostly it is so you can catch something or someone without having to be there. Sure, silence is also an issue. In a survival situation, silence is golden. In the mountains a .22 rimfire will echo for miles, and even in the flatlands, a knowing ear will be able to single it out in a suddenly very quiet, collapsed world. But though you can kill with both a bow and a suppressed firearm, you still have to be there. A trap, a good trap, removes that variable, and either stands guard for you or hunts for you while you are off doing other things.

Probably the most enlightening conversation I had at SHOT Show 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada, was with Barry Covert, an attorney who specializes in Constitutional law, including the First and Second Amendments.

Until recently, when I thought of an air rifle I usually pictured something akin to a BB gun and the little silver CO2 cylinders. I know there has been a history of bigger bore and more powerful air rifles. Lewis and Clark had one with them for example. But modern air rifles are pushing the envelop and the chronograph on what can be accomplished with compressed air and AirForce is leading the way.

The Troy PAR, or Sporting Rifle, is an odd gun. The pump action, AR inspired rifle has some exquisite engineering, and lives up to Troy’s reputation for quality and accuracy. And now they’re releasing the gun in other calibers. And if that isn’t up your alley, the little PDW just might be.

$50,000 One Mile TrackingPoint--SHOT Show 2015

$50,000 One Mile TrackingPoint–SHOT Show 2015

TrackingPoint makes rifles that don’t miss. It is a tremendous concept. Tag your target and pull the trigger. When everything lines up again, the gun will go bang, and whatever is down range is going down. How far do you want to shoot? And how much do you want to spend? TrackingPoint can handle both.
