A robbery attempt at Penn Station turned chaotic Tuesday evening when an off-duty NYPD officer shot a suspect during a violent scuffle on the subway platform.
PIX11 News reports the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jahmar Stewart, is a “career criminal” with five prior arrests, including one just last month for multiple assaults.
The incident unfolded around the evening rush on Track 18. Police sources say that Stewart tried to rob two off-duty officers—a couple heading home to Long Island after working UN security details.
During the confrontation, the male officer was cut on his head as he fought Stewart on the platform.
Believing Stewart may have had a weapon, the female officer drew her firearm and fired at least one shot, striking Stewart in the arm.

No weapon was recovered at the scene, but sources said the officers acted quickly to stop the threat in the crowded station.
Witnesses described the tense moment, with commuters caught off guard in the middle of the rush-hour crowd.
“These officers put themselves on the line every day,” one bystander told PIX11. “They had to make a split-second decision, and they’ll be judged for it.”
Stewart was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he is expected to survive. He is being charged with attempted robbery and assault, per ABC 7 News.
The case highlights what many New Yorkers already know—criminals don’t stop victimizing at the city’s busiest transit hub. Armed citizens and law enforcement alike face tough decisions in an instant, often with innocent lives on the line.
For now, the officers involved are safe, Stewart is in custody, and commuters at Penn Station got an up-close reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in the city.

Too bad for Daniel Penny that he wasn’t extended the same courtesy as these two off duty police officers.
It does not speak well for the marksmanship of the city’s “only ones” who do get to carry and protect themselves wherever they go.
If it was a private citizen who shot this career criminal while being assaulted, we would probably be in trouble for defending ourselves. I am happy it was cops who stopped him, but they are not chosen much as the prey target by criminals. In any case public transportation like the subway system is a “gun free zone” where criminals know they cannot carry weapons and commit crimes. After all they read the “no firearms” signs as any other private citizens does. If there was a law that police officers must leave their weapons at the police station after their shift is over there would be quick and effective protest by the men and women in blue. As it should be-we are all equal when targeted and want to defend ourselves.
“He is being charged with attempted robbery and assault, per ABC 7 News.” … Let me break it down for you; in other words, since this is NYC, he was stitched up – at taxpayers expense of course – booked and charged, then immediately released with no bail.
IF and when this POS goes to court, he’ll get ANOTHER free pass. Slap on the wrist, and turned loose. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll get true justice after he kills a little girl on the subway after getting off work from her pizza flipping job, just like what happened in ‘Little Chicago’ (Charlotte NC).
To the off-duty cop that shot him in the arm — practice makes perfect. Always remember these two very important words; DOUBLE TAP!
