Bodycam: Meth-Addled Man Charges Police with Knife, Hammer

in Current Events, This Week

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

On August 3, 2023, around 11:00 a.m., 54-year-old Christian Johnson called 911 three times, asking for help. Dispatch sent the calls to the Boise Police Department (BPD) for a welfare check.

Officer Garrett Miller, just starting his shift, noticed the call. He remembered Christian from a 911 hang-up call at the same address a few days earlier.

During that call, Christian had admitted to “smoking a bunch of meth” and seemed very paranoid.

Due to their previous interaction, Officer Miller decided to respond. BPD Corporal Andrew Johnson also headed to the scene.

Cpl. Johnson arrived first at the apartment complex at 1101 S. Dale Street, followed by Officer Miller. They parked their patrol cars and heard Christian yelling from the second floor.

Christian was holding a metal spike, a long hammer, and a KA-Bar-style knife.

The officers immediately ordered Christian to drop the weapons. Christian shouted that someone was trying to kill him.

As he moved closer, the officers raised their weapons and kept telling him to drop the knife. Christian refused and charged at them, holding the knife in one hand and the hammer and spike in the other.

When Christian got within six to ten feet, Cpl. Johnson fired his gun, and Officer Miller followed suit. They continued shooting until Christian fell to the ground.

Cpl. Johnson called dispatch about the shooting while Officer Miller kicked the weapons away. Christian was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers found a claw hammer, a K-Bar knife with a twelve-inch blade, and a fourteen-inch metal spike/pry bar.

What do you think of the officers’ response? Good shoot?

Good Shoot. Could the cop on the left have stopped shooting earlier? Maybe. But we’ve all heard the stories of people on drugs feeling no pain and possessing super-human strength. I could see in that cop’s mind this lunatic could possibly have stood right back up again after being hit once or twice and falling to the ground, and then finishing his homicidal intentions. Bottom line: If you charge a cop with weapons raised up in your hands, have no expectation whatsoever of surviving the encounter.

Too many shots. Looks like an execution and not stopping a threat. They only needed to shoot the man one time to stop him, maybe two at the most. They fired center mass, but these officers had plenty of time to shoot him from a distance in the leg. Must have been 6 to 8 shots to the torso. I bet this man is dead.

They stopped shooting when he fell to the ground. That’s what “stopping a threat” means.

The second cop kept shooting after the man fell to the ground. Watch the video again

I think they were way to trigger happy. 1 or 2 shots would have stopped the fight (if not, blast away). He was going down, then on the ground and they were still firing. They just wanted to make sure he died. Especially knowing the liberal DA’s we have in this country.

    drugs are bad….mm’kay

It’s unfortunate that the man was so high on dope that he forced the officers to fire up on him.
I would have expected tasers, mace, batons, handcuffs, etc. to secure him safely without killing him, however it was only a matter of time before he hurt someone unless he was locked away permanently to protect society. The system would probably have just turned him loose again, so the officers probably saved one or more citizen’s lives by taking his. I feel it was justified. His unfortunate neighbors are now safe.

Prolonged use of large doses of meth, along with the sleep deprivation that accompanies it, frequently creates severe paranoia and psychosis, often making users violent and very resistant to pain. The officers had no way of knowing how the person was going to interact with them once he reached them. If they had waited, and he had attacked them, it would have been too late. Soft body armor like that worn under patrol uniforms does not stop stabbing attacks. They had no other option.

This is the society democrats have fostered, impressed yet?

  • Ryan Woltering May 24, 2024, 4:14 pm

I’m a cop in a meth infested area. If that’s not a clean shoot idk what is.

  • Mark Semak May 24, 2024, 3:39 pm

Like sheriff Grady Judd (Polk County, FL) said to reporter who asked why they shot the low life 68 to 100 times that killed one and wounded another of his deputy’s. He said we ran out of bullets. I LOL.

Why do these people insist on abusing a drug that absolutely cooks your brain, not to mention the damage it does to the rest of your body?

  • Clint W. May 24, 2024, 10:41 am

It would be an interesting study to see if the fleeing felon laws enacted in the 1960’s have created a bigger problem than the one they were aimed at fixing, the accidental shooting of an innocent person. All those high speed chases, especially those that caused wrecks where other people got hurt where the criminal bolts and runs, it would be nice if they could just shoot them down.

$20 in ammo saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax payer money.

  • Richard Varner May 24, 2024, 10:18 am

Here’s the thing. People on meth can exhibit “super strength”. Their ability to think clearly and respond accordingly is seriously impaired. Combine these things and you have someone who is extremely dangerous to himself and others. Perhaps it seems over zealous for the officers to keep firing until Christian was down but due to the affects of the meth upon him, it is very likely that one or two rounds would not have been enough to stop Christians attack. Officers are trained to shoot until the perp is down. Single “Hollywood shots” on the mark to stop someone are next to impossible to achieve, therefore requiring more drastic measures. Please don’t be quick to judge these officers, especially since at least one of them had recent interaction with Christian who admitted at that time that he had just used a large amount of meth. IMHO, the twenty-one foot rule against a knife, etc. was applied perfectly. (For the uninitiated, see “Tueller drill” on YouTube for an explanation,)

  • al dutton May 24, 2024, 8:55 am

    good work.

  • David Folsom May 24, 2024, 8:48 am

6-10 feet? They are lucky to be alive. Our Sheriff’s department moved the “shoot space” from 21′ to 36′ a few decades ago when methican-Americans started mixing meth with PCP.

    • Kenneth Jamin May 24, 2024, 9:55 am

It looked more like 21 feet than 6-10 feet to me.

  • Tip Tover May 24, 2024, 8:01 am

Charging Cops with weapons always a loser. Don’t do drugs.

  • LibsWorshipSatan May 24, 2024, 7:47 am

    3 words: NO. GREAT. LOSS.
Society is now a marginally better place with one less tweaker in it.

    What do I think?

    Two things,

    1, DON’T DO DRUGS.

    AND

2, There is one less idiot to vote democrat in America.

    • David Folsom May 24, 2024, 8:50 am

there is no evidence to support your statement #2.He may be taking a dirt-nap, but I bet a vote still gets cast in his name.

      • James May 24, 2024, 9:08 am

Dang it man, you got me there.

You know major television, streaming platforms and cable TV ought to do everyone a Public service by playing Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail in the week before elections.
