On June 25, 2024, just after 3 p.m., a chaotic scene unfolded in the 9000 block of Wesleyan Road in Indianapolis, IN, when multiple 9-1-1 calls came in reporting gunfire.

Witnesses said a man, later identified as 45-year-old Elijah Radford, crashed his truck into another vehicle in a business parking lot and then started shooting. This turned out to be a domestic incident, as Radford knew his target.

Things escalated quickly when Radford allegedly put a rifle to a woman’s head and pulled the trigger. Luckily, the gun didn’t fire.

Radford then fled the scene in his maroon Dodge Ram just as IMPD officers arrived. Inside the building, officers found two victims: a woman with a gunshot wound and a man who had been bitten and injured during a struggle with Radford.

As Radford sped away, a Lawrence police officer and a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy spotted his truck and initiated a high-speed chase that reached up to 100 mph on Interstate 465. Several agencies joined the pursuit, including IMPD, Indiana State Police, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Radford eventually exited the highway and made his way through some side streets, cutting across a grassy area and crashing into an apartment building. With officers in close pursuit, Radford forced his way into an apartment.

Officer Lenane, who was right behind him, approached the apartment where he heard a woman screaming. Inside, he found Radford holding a knife to the woman’s back.

Despite Officer Lenane’s commands to drop the knife, Radford refused, leading Lenane to fire his weapon. Moments later, Lawrence Police Officer Thorup entered and also discharged his weapon.

Radford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fortunately, the woman in the apartment was unharmed. Meanwhile, the woman shot earlier and the man injured in the struggle with Radford were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man had managed to wrestle the firearm away from Radford, preventing further violence. IMPD recovered the gun at the scene.

Thanks to the quick action of law enforcement, a dangerous situation came to an end without more casualties.
